Hey everyone, it's been awhile since i've uploaded. But i had a really short flight to Sea Isle NJ, total flight was a little over half an hour. In this video I showed what it's like setting up a banner and packin up. At some point I will make a video strictly about making a letter banner and setting it up as well s packing up. Leave a comment on what you would like to see more of!
Be sure to drop a like, comment and subscribe! Plan on making a lot of videos this summer!

Impressive how this is done. For years I thought the banner was either let out from the plane or hooked up before takeoff. Also, thanks for the music, found a new one for the playlist… Decidedly very 80s rock ballad sounding.

Definitely a concept not many people know or think about. A lot of people think we take off with the banner and land with the banner. The drag is unlike anything else I’ve experienced. Typically we come in at about 80 knots nose dive full power, snap and as we reach the top and push over the banner comes up and we typically hit 30-40kts in less than 5 seconds

Do you release the banner over the field or just land with it? How much do you make per flight? Is it a company or personal plane?

We have a pull system in the plane to release the hook, depends how many years you have done it and if you’re in a Cessna or Tailwheel. Starting pay was 20/hour Cessna and 23/hr for Tailwheel. It’s company plane

@captnhutch
@captnhutch 3 жыл бұрын
@@jadennelson7808 yea definitely get your instrument then your commercial. Best thing to do is somewhat bang out what you need for your commercial while doing your instrument so like the long cross country and other things. The banner training typically takes a week or so depending on the company. Can expect about 5-10 hours of flight training then followed by an oral and check ride exam

I am curious if you can just takeoff with the banner hooked?
@captnhutch
@captnhutch Жыл бұрын
No you can’t, the main reason being that you won’t have enough momentum. For instance we come in at around 80kts to pick a banner and after the pick and banner is off the ground we instantly go from 80 to about 35kts in less then 30 seconds so you somewhat get pushed back in your seat cause of the instant drag. Landing with a banner is also extremely dangerous because now you have to compensate for about 500+ feet behind your aircraft and must land the plane before the banner touches the ground

I understand that banner towing is considered more dangerous than glider because of drag. Is there any complications when you slow down or approaching landing? How many hp needed to do this kind of work?
@captnhutch
@captnhutch 2 жыл бұрын
To answer your question, landing is normal cause we drop the banner before we land with our hook release. I have a video on it. The company I flew for has mostly 35x65 foot billboards and 40 foot by 85 foot. Letter banners off the top of my head I think no more than 50 characters. For those banners we have 180HP engines. Some companies have 130 but their billboards and letter banners are much smaller
@wckoek
@wckoek 2 жыл бұрын
@@captnhutch I see, there must be a designated point to drop low before you land. Banner towing is a rare sight in my region nowadays
@captnhutch
@captnhutch 2 жыл бұрын
@@wckoek since we operate out of so many airports typically solo we just pick a spot over the ground to drop the banner. Biggest issue is the amount of space available and winds. I dropped mine on the runway sometimes and had to land super short, long or have someone who worked at the fbo and take it off the runway
@wckoek
@wckoek 2 жыл бұрын
@@captnhutch which model of plane is sought for this kind of job? I imagine it is fabric kind of light aircraft like Cub, in Europe they use Rallye for towing sometimes.
@captnhutch

What happens if the hook doesn't detach before landing
@captnhutch
@captnhutch 2 жыл бұрын
We have to land with the banner, super dangerous operation happens usually 3-5x a year. We would fly high above the runway cut the power and land around the halfway point little more than halfway and roll out to the end of the runway

Hey Ian! Big fan of your videos. I'm currently searching for banner pilots to fly a banner in the Tristate area for promotion for a documentary. I just requested to follow you on instagram, but love to send you more information about the project if you're interested or have any pointers for someone looking to print a custom banner and hire a pilot to fly it. Hope to hear from you soon. Cheers!
