I remember well banner towing at RAF Chivenor in the late 80's. The banner was towed by a Hawk T1A but it didn't have a message on it...it was a target banner and student pilots would try and hit it with 30mm cannon shells. Once the banner had gone there was always loads of fuel to go and explore Dartmoor. Happy days!

Completely shocked to hear of the death of Simon. A complete blow to the community and it's extremely sobering that such even the most experienced of aviators can find themselves in such unfortunate circumstances. Thoughts are with his family.

@@LawnBunny777 Simon was flying in a Piper PA28 in Spain, but very sadly crashed into a mountain due to fog. He was flying under the minimum required VFR meteorological conditions.

Yes I always imagined that one dragged the banner along the ground rather like a glider.

Excellent. I remember the National Flight School @ EIWT used a Cub for banner towing when I was there learning how to fly a C150 some 17 years ago. Always admired the skill of banner pilots during the pickup.

I hadn't realised until now the banner isn't attached at takeoff - very informative! I guess the other trick is ensuring you're doing a left hand turn around your target audience so that the message isn't "mirror"/backwards =)

In my early years of building hours I flew banners. Citabrias and C150 with 180hp. We flew with 3 hooks and would stay aloft for 3+hours. Somedays we would have 4-6 planes in the air over a football game plus the Goodyear blimp. This was all pre-9/11. Ask an old time banner pilot about wrapping the hook cable around the rudder horn or a Citbria. On pick up when the line goes taunt it kicks the rudder full over. That's an oh crap moment at 300 agl.

Thank you for this! I worked ground crew for a banner tow operation here in the US for a good four plus years! Loved every minute of it! It's neat to see how other tow operators outfit their aircraft, as well as the similarities! It's a lot of work for both the pilot and the ground crew (if present). As a bonus, most of the pilots were CFI's, and I'd get to log the cross country time (right-seat) to and from events! Free hours! Question: Are there billboards being towed over there, too? These are 50' tall, 150' long sheets of nylon with images/words.

You're right! He does! Those were a lot of fun! On particularly windy days, I'd actually have to lay across the accordion'd billboard to keep it from billowing out, and jumping to the side as the hook came through the loop!

It certainly wasn't ideal, to be sure, but as with anything dangerous, it's important to be aware of your surroundings. Luckily, our operation had (and continues to have) no banner-towing incidents, but we've heard stories, too, to be sure!

The gentleman in this video lost his life in an accident. However, there is a an old banner towing guy at my local airfield here in Aus who uses a Citabria. I’ve watched him a few times and he drops it next to the runway strip whilst flying upwind, after pulling some sort of release mechanism. He then does another circuit to land, jumped in his ute and collects the banner.
