Hi guys! Today I'll be walking you guys through the Harvard Law School application process step-by-step. Of course, today's advice isn't just for prospective HLS students-the elements of an excellent law school application ring true for all law schools. We'll discuss:
1) College choice
2) Majors, GPA, and extracurriculars
3) Gap years/professional experience
4) The LSAT
5) The resume
6) The personal statement + optional statements
7) Letters of recommendation
8) Timing
...and much more!
Undoubtedly, the law school application process can be overwhelming. The trick is to take it one step at a time, and MOST importantly, have faith in yourself and the work you are doing. A note of caution: Don't let your undergraduate experience and gap years be overshadowed by the end goal of law school. Instead, let law school conform to YOUR ambitions and dreams along the way. This video is just a rough template of the tools you can employ to get there.
Love, Babs

Congratulations and best wishes for your time in law school. It was fall, 1964, I was a 19 year old senior in college who had taken the LSAT that fall. On professors' recommendations I had also taken the GRE and planned to attend graduate school. But my LSAT score was particularly high, I had a Harvard application in hand, the fee was not too bad, so I applied to Harvard Law School and five graduate schools. Harvard accepted me, and now I am a retired lawyer living on a farm. It sounds like things were easier back then. Your video was fun to watch, and I look forward to seeing your progress in school. I hope you have a good pair of snow boots.

Hi Naina, I am so pleased you enjoyed my videos! Financial aid is a BEAST and unfortunately, the financial aid process and scholarship programs vary significantly depending on the law school. For example, Harvard Law has a LIPP (Low Income Protection) program that's unique to the school. Yale and Stanford have their own unique financial aid programs as well. Each law school's website should have something akin to an estimated cost breakdown that you can check out when figuring out what's financially feasible for you. Check out Harvard Law's as an example here: hls.harvard.edu/dept/sfs/financial-aid-policy-overview/student-financial-aid-budget/ The good news is that you usually don't have to stress out about the finanical aid process until after you get accepted. Once you get accepted to the law school of your choice, your school's financial aid office will walk you step-by-step through the process on how to get the funds you need. The Harvard Law financial aid office has been amazing walking me through my loans, I felt super supported the whole way through. Hope this helps!

1) Harvard OMG so amazing! This was the most insightful and concise law school admissions video, I really appreciate your transparency in regard to GPA, LSAT, ECs, and experience - not many people are as open or truthful! 2) I have two questions: Would you recommend starting one's app junior year (for someone that wants to go straight into law school after undergrad)? How did you find an internship, I'm having a hard time as most "legal" internships are for law students? Were you part of any pre-law campus organizations such as clubs?
@BanterwithBabs
@BanterwithBabs 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Yasmine! I always wished I had someone be transparent with me when I was going through the law school application process. The more transparency there is out there, the more equitable the law school application process becomes! To answer your questions: 1) You should start preparing your application the summer between your junior and senior year of college if you want to go to law school right after undergrad. I would submit your application as early as possible in September, and no later than Thanksgiving. 2) My university had a program specifically set up for exceptional students to get public policy internships in D.C. I would check with the pre-law advisor at your university to see if your school has something similar you can apply to! 3) I was not part of any pre-law organizations in undergrad. Hope this helps! You are a lifesaver, thank you so so much! I have a question if you don't mind answering :) I'm a junior in college with a high GPA and a promising LSAT score, however, I'm struggling to find the "proactive" aspect to my application. I work as a legal administrative assistant right now but I am not published nor accredited at the moment. I have been singing for about 10 years and I love historical analysis, but I'm not sure where to start to hone those skills into something that stands out.
@BanterwithBabs
@BanterwithBabs 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Neha! It sounds like you already have a solid resume, with a legal background and interesting hobbies such as singing and historical analysis. I don't have the whole picture of your background, but here are a couple of suggestions for adding a more "proactive" aspect to your application: Ask your employer to assign you a major project. You could add a bullet point about this project to your resume to demonstrate your legal skills. What are you studying in college right now? Does it involve historical analysis? Did you have a professor that particularly inspired you? If so, you might want to reach out to that professor about research opportunities that you can help out with! As a final note, you do not have to be "published" or "accredited" to have a strong resume. Taking on a major project for a student organization also reflects the initiative law schools are looking for. Try to get creative when looking for these kinds of opportunities. Since you are a junior in college, you still have a whole year left to get involved in undergraduate research or a student org! Hope this helps, Babs

Since I keep getting this video recommended to me, I finally wanted to come here and comment. The thing about law school admissions is that they’re very much a crapshoot. A candidate Harvard may jump on one year is one they’d completely reject the next. That doesn’t mean that those rejected kids didn’t have great applications, stellar extracurriculars, and an amazing personal story just like her. You could literally be the exact same candidate as she, apply to Harvard, then get rejected. Thousands of perfect candidates get rejected from these schools every year, and there is no noticeable difference between who gets in and who doesn’t. As someone who attends a T20, you got lucky and so did I.

I really liked your insight on professional experience. One of my friends has been in Harvard for a year - we were both engineers before he took the opportunity to do his LSAT and move on to focusing energy law & contracts. How much of your work experience did you draw on for your personal statements? In his opinion, he felt that his work experience had a lot more breath vs. his undergrad because he dealt with a lot of those issues of law. (and his undergrad wasn't related to law at all).

Hi Jonathan! My personal statement drew exclusively from my work experience as a science educator. I felt the same way as your friend, it can be difficult to explain the transition from a STEM undergrad to law school without some work experience to clarify why the law profession is a good career choice for you. I can't advocate for getting professional work experience enough, it makes a huge positive difference!

This video has really given me such inspiration. I pray that Harvard Law accepts me as I prepare to apply a year from now. I am currently a junior in college and studying to take my LSAT in June of 2023. I have a few questions: 1. How many hours a day did you study for the LSAT? 2. Is it impossible to get accepted to HLS if you don't have any opportunities to do research and internships as an undergrad? 3. Could your GPA and LSAT balance each other out (e.g: if you have a fair GPA, but a really high LSAT score, could HLS take this into consideration, despite your score not being the highest compared to people applying with 4.0s)?
@BanterwithBabs
@BanterwithBabs Ай бұрын
Hi Sabrina! To answer your questions: 1. How many hours a day did you study for the LSAT? It varied, but I studied around 0.5-1 hour a day on weekdays and 3-5 hours a day on the weekend. For a step-by-step walk-through of my study schedule, check out my video, "HOW TO STUDY (Effectively) FOR THE LSAT | How I Scored a 175," available here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jsqFmNt7ytLUqIU.htmlsi=XcnYOvtUuqURatZJ 2. Is it impossible to get accepted to HLS if you don't have any opportunities to do research and internships as an undergrad? Everyone's application is unique, and there is no "master formula" for guaranteed acceptance. If you didn't have the opportunity to pursue research and internships in undergrad, law schools still greatly value a high LSAT score and GPA, prior work experience, stellar recommendations, and well-written personal statements. 3. Could your GPA and LSAT balance each other out (e.g: if you have a fair GPA, but a really high LSAT score, could HLS take this into consideration, despite your score not being the highest compared to people applying with 4.0s)? Your GPA and LSAT can certainly "balance" each other out. For example, my GPA was below HLS' median GPA at the time but my LSAT score was in HLS' upper percentile. I think these two data points balanced each other out in my case. I hope this is helpful, and best of luck with your law school applications!

Congratulations on Harvard!! This video is so inspiring and informative! How did you decide the right time to apply to law school? I'm having a hard time figuring out if waiting a year after undergrad to improve LSAT scores is worth it. I have 3 internships that may already be sufficient professional experience for law school (?), so my decision mostly comes down to taking the time to improve my LSAT (currently 165) which I think is holding me back most in applications. I'm also concerned because the earliest I can apply this cycle is the end of October. Any insight would be amazing! Thanks for such a great video! :)
@BanterwithBabs
@BanterwithBabs 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Melody! The "right" time to apply is when you feel satisfied with your LSAT score. If you feel like you've reached your potential and are happy with what law schools you are likely to get into based on your score, then I would say go for it! If you feel like you still have room for improvement, even if it's only by 3 points, I think waiting a year is still worth it. A 3 point difference can make a significant impact on your application and qualify you for scholarships that you otherwise wouldn't have had access to. Hope this helps! Babs

I’m very content with the law schools in Australia so I’m probably not going to move to the US to go to Harvard, but I’ll try my best to get into a law school around me. I got rejected from transferring from my current bachelor of education and arts because my gpa was slightly too low - mainly because I only realised I wanted to do law the last month of my first year so I didn’t really try. But in all honesty your situation sounds a LOT like mine in terms of jumping from one degree (education) to law so I may or may not complete the degree first so that I at least have that qualification for teaching, maybe teach for a few years, and then apply for a JD (which is like a law degree except more compact time wise) and the prerequisite is just an undergrad degree. :)
