There's nothing wrong with 5 watts (as most 5W radios don't actually put out 5 watts), and it's amazing it hits 10 watts on UHF. My walkie-talkies are UHF and to be honest, 5W and 10W are about the same when it comes to transmitting and they're identical when it comes to receiving. But it's hard not to like the BF-H7 (aka UV-99). It's just so datgum gorgeous. The S5 also shares the same look, but it's a 5W tri-band.

10W did the jobs in a more urban setting. Depending on the number of your local repeaters, if you are in a more crowded state, it would guarantee certain numbers of radio stations for national control. That said if it's advertised and it's true to 10w. We could see a 20miles+ easy touch with 200m hill. With 5 watts, you can have some struggle with that distance if that's some obstacle. It usually falls short after 10 miles based some of the testing I've see online.

@@OnTheMicwithMike » Quite right. In the U.K. how are these radio frequencies regulated? My wife is from Iran, where FM is used by the military. She found this out by taking a radio to her family. She said they took the radio, did something to it and gave it back fully functional except that it would no longer play FM. About the H7, do you still have it and, if so, is it still working to your satisfaction? If you were to use it while camping/hiking, would you set transmission to HIGH (10 watts-ish) or would you set it on MEDIUM (5 watts-ish)? Does the HIGH setting quickly drain the battery to the extent you would use the lower seeing? Thanks!

Really the most accessible radio service open to everyone here is PMR 446. But there are legal requirements with them, power limit of 0.5w and the radio must have a fixed antenna so these Baofeng radios aren’t legal to use on PMR. It doesn’t stop people though from doing it but that’s it. The rest you need to be a licensed Ham operator or a business licence holder. I have to be perfectly honest, I hardly use handheld radios or 2m and 70cm for that matter. Very rare I’d pick up a radio and call out on one of the calling channels, I’m more into HF myself :) But using the BF-H7 on medium power is more than enough really.

@OnTheMicwithMike3 жыл бұрын
The radio sounds the same as any other radio. The battery seems to be decent, I used it a fair few times and the battery lasted a good while. As for the waterproof test, I may do a waterproof test soon and film it for the channel to see how it fairs after a dunk in some water.
@johnroberts66952 жыл бұрын
Hi, Mike. Just a few quick notes. Do you ever watch videos by Randy (NotARubicon)? He recently reviewed two waterproof Retevis RT29 10-watt UHF walkie-talkies (radios he didn't have the legal license to transmit on). Despite his channel name, he is just a bit of a Rubicon. A tiny bit. He went to a friend who is licensed, and they did a range test that's pretty impressive. They went over 7 miles from each other in an urban environment with remarkable clarity. Of course, it's antenna size was itself remarkable. But if I understood you correctly, the Baofeng H7 hit 10 watts on the UHF setting, but only about half that on the VHF setting. And I'd assume the results would be the same for the H6 as well. So I wondered if, since your initial assessment, you've had any other interesting measurements in either UHF or VHF? Specifically, is there any indication Baofeng preset any frequency settings that you know of? It did this with the 5R+ (which I wish it hadn't). It just struck me strange that it hit 10 watts in UHS, but half that in VHF. Another thing I found interesting, but completely understandable, was that when Randy held down the [PTT] button, the meter showed that the wattage began to drop. BTW, what are the laws and licensing requirements in the UK 🇬🇧 on UHS and VHS uses? Are there costs involved? Exams? We've got 90+ percent of people in the US 🇺🇸 ignoring the GMRS laws, but those who _are_ licensed get increasingly snippy with those who aren't. The law says GMRS licences are $35, but the FCC it's still charging $70 on its website. Just wondered what it was like on your side of the pond.

On the BAOFENG BF-H7, HOW does one switch from UHF band to VHF band?

To change from channel mode to VFO mode, hold down the GREEN button (top left on the keypad). To change back it’s the same again, press and hold.
