In this video during our weekly Southern & South-East PMR net myself and the Chairman Mr Ray CT2290, decided to attempt a contact from Baofeng to Baofeng handheld radios. I was on Devil's Dyke in East Sussex and Ray was portable on Ide Hill in Kent.
Considering the range for these small BF-T1 radios are 1-5km, would the contact be made with Ray of a distance of 46km?!

Great range over sea level. Outstanding small radio for a very small price. Is there a memory in this one, to program some frequencys into channels???? Thanks for the test. What is the transmit power from this little one???
@OnTheMicwithMike

Rocco Stafford there are 16 memory channels which is very limited. It’s not too bad, I don’t use it anymore to be honest.

Impressive that you did it with a very low battery. HTs only get their full transmit strength on a full battery.

Very impressive, I've just bought a UV5R and have absolutely no knowledge of these types of radio, bought for emergency comms, just in case, can you put me in the right direction for learning please, thank you.

To be honest these radios are really meant for ham radio use, mainly. Which requires a licence.

Did u do some programming for that prior to the range test?
@OnTheMicwithMike
@OnTheMicwithMike 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, programmed in the 16 pmr 446 frequencies. As it uses 0.5w and a fixed antenna it meets requirements here in the UK.

Location. Biggest part of it, I’ve made a contact to another person on it on simplex who was 32 miles away but we were both on hilltops. Using half a watt. It all depends on location.

Handhelds like these are just for short range comms. Not really worth bothering with most of the time, very limited range and power. Unless you’re able to get on high ground.

hi, why should i press moni/vol to hear
@OnTheMicwithMike
@OnTheMicwithMike 4 жыл бұрын
Monitor is used to 'open' the squelch control momentarily. This could be for one of two reasons - 1) to set your desired volume and 2) if you're at a bit of a long range away from the person you're trying to hear, you could press 'monitor' to see if you can hear them before messing around with setting the squelch control to open. Hope that helps.

@FntSquall 4 жыл бұрын
@@OnTheMicwithMike thx but how can i hear it without having to let it press and without putting the squelch on 0 because the continuous noise is unbearable, I use it right next to the UV-5R and I don't have this problem with it , when I press ptt on the BF-T1 the UV-5R receives without pressing a single button but when I press ptt on the UV-5R I am obliged to stay pressed moni / vol on the BF -T1 to hear otherwise the only clue indicating a call to me is the small diode which lights up in green

Indeed it does. But range can be extended on these small radios by using them on high ground. Around town they are useless unless you’re licensed and can use repeaters. 73’

Around town / urban environment you won’t. They are so limited on UHF the range is less than line of sight, even less around town. Try on high ground you’ll have better luck.

@@OnTheMicwithMike yeah i was being hopeful since i live in rural suberbia in australia. Not a lot goes on here, i bet most pple dont even have internet lol :P.... also part of the distance i needed it to cover was an empty school play oval/yard thingy. Maybe mine are clones. I noticed mine came with bright orange lanyards instead of the blue named ones, and did have a small cutout inside to fit the connecting wire once you plug it to battery without it pinching, unlike all the ones ive seen online that have a problem there. Other than that they seemed identical. I dunno squat about radios and no licence so programed it to power ( high ) and stuck to chanel 1 that showed up with the prog cable. ( scared of using some channel that would get me arrested )
