I bought my baofeng because it advertised itself as the most powerful etc. Little did I know what a pain in the arse programming it would be. You're right, the manual was worthless. I looked over youtube and was unable to find a channel that I could understand and follow. Then I found yours. Oh happy day. Much thanks for your straightforward/easy to understand (and use) tutorial. You betcha I'll subscribe and pay attention to what you tell me about this machine! Thanks again.

Your post made it so easy. Thanks! I thought I am screwed having macOS Catalina but it went smooth w/o hiccup. Different port assignment but its generally the same. I do had to download the Unified version of the software through. Addendum: Just also found out while inside Chirp, we can click the Settings Menu -> Basic Settings -> Display Mode (A): -> choose NAME and for Display Mode (B): choose FREQUENCY. Options were readily available once we're in there. What makes your post valuable is the #Sequence of how to proceed. Kudos!

How do I find the only channels I'm allowed to use as a technician ???
@starttofinishpodcasting37213 жыл бұрын
Quick question. If I purchased two (2) UV-5R's for me and my wife to talk on and the the frequency is a frequency that no one talks on would the FCC come after me? Is it okay to use the UV-5R radios without a HAM license? Can I talk with my wife on a frequency that no one is really on?
@jasmine25013 жыл бұрын
It is not likely that anyone would hear you on an unused channel, but it's very hard to determine if a channel is actually unused. Many channels which sound quiet are actually actively transmitting data. So yes, the FCC would probably try to find whoever is spamming that channel. You could probably get away with using the FRS channels, but it's not strictly legal to do that with these radios.
@jeffreys.harris34333 жыл бұрын
After you down load chirp? say I want to add a new frequency and I'm not near a computer will I have to manually add new frequency ? Or can I just add frequency and the radio will do all of the other stuff?
@jasmine25013 жыл бұрын
In use, you can always dial in a frequency that is not in your list. It won't be added to the list. You can also save a new channel to the list, but you can't give it a name, you can only name channels in Chirp.

Thanks for this video! I have the above Baofeng UV-5R radio and was following along. Any idea how to find my COM port if it doesn't show up under Device Manager COM Ports? Thanks!

Usually I try reloading the Device Manager, Unplugging the device and plugging in again, rebooting the system, and then plugging the device again. @mechveteran013 жыл бұрын
And for what it's worth I did do a Google search but found nothing relating to my radio not having a band button, or what that means and if my radio has a different way of going about what the band button does on other radios. I'm literally just getting started, this is my first HAM radio. I got it because of everything that's currently going on in our country. My grandfather was a HAM radio enthusiast but he died before he could teach me about it. @ExtremeSquared4 жыл бұрын
If you program FRS channels properly -- low power, narrow bandwidth -- you realistically will never get caught or bother anyone. The channel mode with FRS freqs programmed is way safer than having the thing in frequency mode, where you can easily step on channels, and will get caught. Same with MURS.
@SpeakNowHoldYourPeace2 жыл бұрын
Quick question: I have two (2) Baofeng UV-5Rs. I have them set and programed identically the same in the menu. I also have them on the same frequency. When I transmit from Baofeng radio # 1 to Baofeng radio # 2 it works fine however when I try to transmit from Baofeng radio # 2 to Baofeng radio # 1, the Baofeng radio # 1 will not pick up the transmission from the other Baofeng radio #2. SO I cannot hear any signal/transmission from Baofeng radio # 1. Do you think there is something wrong with Baofeng radio # 1?

Can anyone here think of a reason why CHIRP won't let me program GMRS/FRS frequencies into my radio? I purchased two Baofeng UV-5R radios (post Sept 30th) and, while I can program those frequencies into the radio manually, CHIRP won't maintain those frequencies during upload or download. Instead, it converts the frequencies to the last programmed frequency not in the GMRS/FRS frequencies. Both radios act the same way.
@jasmine25014 жыл бұрын
Are you following the instructions in the video? I have programmed all the FRS channels into mine, no problem.
@dwightstewart71814 жыл бұрын
@@jasmine2501 .. Yes, I've programmed more than 75 channels, in two radios, without any problems - and those frequencies manually in both radios (afterwards saved into channels). Again, the problem is unique to those specific frequencies, in both radios. The only thing consistent between the two is the software, hence my question.
@jasmine25014 жыл бұрын
@@dwightstewart7181 This could be the result of updates in the programming. Very strange for sure.
@dwightstewart71814 жыл бұрын
@@jasmine2501 .. Yeah, it's definitely got me stumped. I don't know if it's a change in the radio (impacting the software), a bug in the software version I downloaded, or something else. Luckily, it's only impacting those specific frequencies, which I don't need. Everything else in the radio and software works perfectly. Thanks for taking the time to ponder the issue with me.

If you are using Chirp, verify that the available bandwidth includes frequencies this high under left hand sides settings?
@TimmonBreenBabyGirl3 жыл бұрын
Major problems programing these radios. Even with a good cable and CHIRP the radio will not respond. Went back to CHIRP and tried to download latest updated version and it was blocked because of malware. That was the 64 bit. Then tried the 32 bit and it was clean. Long story short the 32 bit shows com port 1 and com port 3 where the old 64 bit CHIRP only shows port 1. Port 3 works. It took almost a day to figure all this out but I hope this might help someone who has the same problems.
