In this video, I go over differences and similarities between these two ham radios.
Regarding the ICOM:
-The ICOM is Japanese.
-This radio is $150, which is fifty dollars more.
-Only a 600mAh battery.
-In addition, the battery is Nickel-Cadmium (NiCd)
-No battery life indicator to tell how much life is left.
-Heavier and a little bulkier.
-Channels are locked, so you can't transmit on any channels without a license.
-BNC connector for antenna.
Regarding the Baofeng:
-The Baofeng is Chinese.
-This radio is $50 or less, over 50 dollars less than the Japanese counterpart.
-1800mAh battery, which is THREE times the capacity.
-In addition, the battery is a lithium-ion (Li-Ion)
-Battery indicator tells you how much life is left.
-Lighter and less bulky.
-Includes L.E.D. light/strobe.
-Channels are unlocked, so you can transmit on channels without a license. If you do that, especially on railroad channels, that can result in several federal charges.
-SMA connector for antenna.

@ Austin Priest: No, I put it 190, but it always goes back to 175, don't know why though. Supposedly, there's a way to override it, I just don't know how to do it. I know someone that knows how to, though. So I'm gonna try to meet up with him later on this week to help me get all the channels in.

Not sure if you figured it out, but its the STEP option in the menu. Comes defaulted to 25Khz, change it to something smaller, I set mine to 5Khz.

The proper way to hold a radio is at head height, and the antenna is pointed 45 degrees between horizontal and vertical, away from your head.

Go to frequency mode, type in frequency and then go to the menu option for "MEM CH", select what channel you'd like set frequency on, and then hit menu til it says "confirm" or "receiving memory" depending on which model you have. I now own a Baofeng UV-5RX3 and it can be programmed that way. Kind of a pain but it's doable.

Old Version Baofengs like you have. Have firmware bugs like that. I have a UV-5R which is manufactured on 2017. And never got any problem.

Yeah I gotcha. I now use a Yaesu FT-25 pretty much exclusively now and I like it MUCH better! Better range, easier to program. You don't need computer software to program an FT-25 like a UV-5R, it can be programmed by hand using just a few buttons (MR, then type frequency, push and hold MR again. That's all there is to it). It's a little cheaper than their old radios so I like to look at it like a Cadillac Baofeng if that makes any sense
