The Baofeng UV-5R8W is an enhanced version of the original UV-56. It makes for a good radio to use for rail fanning as it will monitor two frequencies continually or can be used to scan a range. It's a bit tedious to program any scanner by hand, so I've created a file you can use toprogram the radio using the CHIRP software package. It does require a special USB cable, but CHIRP is a free download and works on Macs, PCs and Linux machines. Here are the links to everything you need:
