The Baofeng UV-5R8W is an enhanced version of the original UV-56. It makes for a good radio to use for rail fanning as it will monitor two frequencies continually or can be used to scan a range. It's a bit tedious to program any scanner by hand, so I've created a file you can use toprogram the radio using the CHIRP software package. It does require a special USB cable, but CHIRP is a free download and works on Macs, PCs and Linux machines. Here are the links to everything you need:

I've been a ham op since the early 1990s. I paid between in 300 and 400 bux for an icom 2sat ht back in the day. It only worked on 2m and after sitting on the shelf for a couple years, it went dead. I shudder to think what that cost would be today. I don't care what anyone says about the quality of these radios. I've had more fun with my $20 baofeng with more QSOs and time on the air than any other radio I've ever used. Thanks for the tutorial George.

@@JumpingoffthecliffThat's great George! I used hamtestonline because I really loved their algorithm. It targeted my weak areas, taught me a lot, and set goals for me. It ranked me compared to others learning and best of all, it changed the order of the answers so it forced you to learn the answer and not the letter. I got a 100% on my Extra exam in June of 2013. Felt like I could pass it after 2 weeks, but since I had 3 weeks to wait until the next VE session, 3 more weeks of study netted me that 100%. Practice times were every breakfast, lunch, and dinner solid and never more than an hour at a time. I'm such a believer in it, if you aren't already using their site, I'll pay for your 2 year membership. In exchange, you must study, pass, and promise to have a QSO with me when you're in the area. :) You've already got my email address so hit me up if you're interested.

As a big fan of your channel, it’s always nice to see a new adventure. Just a suggestion, you might want to consider switching the key press and activity lights to orange and the transmit to off. I personally find the orange easier on the eyes at night. I also find that it seems to lure the mosquitoes less than the bright blue or purple does. The reason I recommend turning off the transmit light is because when your battery voltage is low, it can be the difference in getting a transmission out.

Perhaps the next time you go to Chicago you should also do a video around the Chicago L that runs around downtown Chicago, also known as the Chicago Elevated. It is really as far as I know, the oldest, and the last elevated train line in the U.S. Aside from the one that used to run around New York back in the day.

The New York subway system still has a lot of elevated trains, maybe half of the system. I ride them all the time! Although it's a bit of a bummer that almost all of the passenger-accessible front windows are gone.

I have the same radio, and while it’s cumbersome as a scanner, the dual frequency monitor feature is great for trains. I have the bigger battery for mine, and it lasts forever! Another nice feature is the built in FM broadcast radio which lets you listen to music or other programming while you’re monitoring the railroad. A pair of Plugfones earbuds work great with an adapter too.

Similar for airplanes. The main channels to know about are 'guard' which we'll call the general chat frequency, 'ground' which is planes on the ground (go figure) and 'Tower' which is, yep you guessed it, the tower. E: Tower may or may not be split between arrivals and departures. E2: Channel 16 is your general emergency channel for boats.

Train hoppers are advised to keep a few channels open for National Weather Service broadcast frequencies. Also they need to know there are a lot of counterfeit Baofeng programming cables out there so be careful to buy one with the correct chip.

On the lighter side of things. I ordered this radio but before I did I wanted to refer back to this video to make sure of the radio’s name. When I went to KZfaq and did a search for ‘Jumping of a cliff’. KZfaq directed me to a suicide prevention hotline.
