I really like the UV-5R, its a great radio, for the price Its really well build! And the sound quality is superb the range is meee but ok, It could be my antenna. I love the batterylife, the diffrent options for antennas, the radio, the ease of programming, and the fact that I can talk to my kids with their toy radios so when we go for a bike ride, I dont have to yell I just calk calmly talk in the radio and they can hear it on the bicycle. Great radio. I recomend Baofeng, best for the price no doubt.

My record is 121.4 miles on a baofeng (repeater distance from repeater book app with GPS). That's to a very good repeater with my antenna 19ft off ground. Radio to radio personal best is 14 miles with an 19ft mast, abbree 42.5", and Nagoya UT-72 on my car. My field repeater, a surecom simplex ammo can repeater, I've got 33 miles from radio to repeater to another radio. Repeater on ridge with 19ft mast.

With a handheld to another handheld the absolute maximum you can get is about 6 miles as the horizon begins blocking the signal. Get antenna higher, at least 12ft off ground.

@@MoonRambo702 not broke. Step one is to get an surecom VSWR meter to see what going on. Order that with a few different abbree antennas. Get a 42.5", and wire unit, maybe a 771 clone. They're pretty cheap so it's not huge money. If you're going to be in a car get a Nagoya UT-72. Don't cheap out on this it's $35. Your radio ain't broke there's just a learning curve. It's part of the fun. I posted just now I got 121.4 miles to a repeater. 75 miles all day long. Hitting local repeaters is also far easier than hitting another hand held radio. It's all in learning what you're doing and it's vital to get an VSWR meter.
