I just received my copy of BOF, I love it. The medieval authentic, where the paradigm of their beliefs are true is such a great way to play fantasy. On the printing, I haven’t ordered one single book from drivethru that didn’t have a fault.

I often see people get confused with the phrase "Medieval Authentic" when referring to some of Pundit's works. Medieval Authentic -- at least with respect to Lion & Dragon, Sword & Caravan, and now I assume Baptism of Fire (the latter I do not own) -- means the fantasy elements of the setting are authentic to what the people and culture believed them to be at the time. It's not supposed to mean Medieval realism where there are no fantasy elements. The phrase is simply differing itself from what we expect from typical D&D High Fantasy that's more inspired by 20th century literature like Tolkien and less on accurate Medieval folklore, where we have an assumption parties are going to consist of humans adventuring alongside stoic dwarven warriors and fireball casting Elven wizards. Which wouldn't be medieval authentic because these demi-humans would have been monsters as they were depicted in the folklore of that time. Monotheism and ritual based magic are also essential parts of the genre that separate it from most High Fantasy settings. I think Pundit should just add "Fantasy" to the end of the Medieval Authentic phrase to avoid confusion. It's essentially Low Fantasy.

I think Pundit has said about Medieval Authentic that it also takes into accounts what people at the time believed about the supernatural. So while it is in "the real world", it can avoid being strictly realistic by tapping into those beliefs and folklore

I understand that, but as I said the superstition or belief should be debunked by an encounter that proves those beliefs false. It's like the Scooby Doo Mysteries, once the mask is torn off the fear of the supernatural is gone.

@@DM_Bluddworth Spot on, my mind was going to Scooby-Doo also. VIllians or "the crown" would likely use superstitions and fear to keep travelers away from locations, or scare away investigation by locals. In my opinion it's a mechanic that could be used periodically, but when used too often it would become predictable and disruptive to player immersion in the setting.

I bought the pdf based on multiple OSR Tubers recommendations. I haven't read it yet but I flipped through, and agree that the layout colors and art are nice.

Witcher is set in a fantasy world based on medieval Poland. Not actual Poland.

Personally, I'd say there is a line between 'Medieval Authentic' Fantasy Roleplay (i.e. Pundit's stuff or the CRPG Darklands) and straight-up historical gaming (Osprey et. al). The authenticity would be toward Medieval not contemporary academia. Speaking of which, there is a professor at some university in Tennessee trying to get funding for a complete commercially available translation of a 13th century encyclopedia. May he succeed; it would be an excellent resource for anyone who wanted to get into into the mindset and common knowledge of people at the time (educated ones anyway). Your point about the cover font being hard to read particularly at the bottom in red is a very good one.

I’m going to first review its rule system and its lore.

I think the review would be more meaningful if you bought the book yourself. I give very little credence to reviewers that get free stuff. It colors your judgment. It does. As.for Pundits stuff, I own Lion and Dragon, Dark Albion, Invisible College, and a few others, but I won'r likely be buying any more since he said that games that use a point buy by definition cannnot be OSR, only class-based games belong in the OSR club. So screw him.

Did you watch my review? Did it appear my judgement was colored? First, I opened up with the disclaimer. My very first comment was the physical binding issue with the first page. Second, I stated the font color choice of the front cover could have been better. Later, the font choice in general is often hard to read. This was just the first look and focus on the physical aspects of the book. I’ll continue in future videos looking specifically at the game system.

@@DM_Bluddworth Richard, you know I watched it. I watched the disclaimer, and as a big fan and supporter of yours I offered that I give credence to reviewers that receive free copies. It is a thin line between "this is my honest review" and "this is me shilling for free stuff." Ethically, I think it's best for reviewers of things like RPGs to pay for them out of pocket. That way the review really is honest. Take your misaligned binding as an example. How much more irritated would you be if you shelled out the $45 for the standard hardcover? But since it is a review copy you can afford to be less upset. It's not an indictment against you personally, but the culture of doling out free stuff for largely positive reviews. It's not like I am canceling my channel membership. At least not yet. 😄

@@bopaintsminis Would you really hesitate to ask a buddy about their take on a game because you're too afraid they'd be shilling for a designer? Then, you might have trust issues. Like most subscribers, if I thought Bluddworth was a shill, I wouldn't be subscribed. Obviously, I don't speak for "Richard" but I suspect the opinion of one "Karen-like" subscriber doesn't hold that much weight in the grand scheme of things. You may have control issues as-well.

@@thirstnhowliv9740 If I didn't trust his opinion I would not be a paying member. Have you put your money where your mouth is? A friend's opinion is not remotely the same as a content creator's. You should understand that, a social relationship vs. a parasocial one. Friends are friends. Creators want clicks. As for your acusations, the only reply worth typing is that it's your opinion. And opinions are like assholes. I'll bet you have two of them. Now run along. Grownups are talking.

@@bopaintsminis Sorry to have interrupted your paranormal interaction with "Richard". I didn't realize you were actually paying him to tolerate your Karen-like preaching & your passive-aggressive threats to unsubscribe. At any rate, I know that you're a regular social media "fire-brand" with that 150+ (paid)subscriber base flocking to hear your opinions, but "you should understand that" nobody likes a self-important arsehole, who lowkey boasts/promotes his financial bullying practices. It's really not a very good look... Gotta parasocial-cope for that, fire-brand?
