Fall colors are getting started, but are quite variable right now as you move about Mount Desert Island. Looking out my window here at the SW tip of the island only the birches have started to yellow. A bit inland some of the maples and oaks are starting to change. I did notice some color starting over near Bar Harbor last week. I think we have a couple of weeks yet to peak color although there will be more color at higher elevations.

Our peak has already begun here in the Adirondack Mountains. It is starting to fade. Even still I love the reds from the Staghorn Sumac.

Bar Harbor is in a beautiful location, but as you noted the tourism is nuts. The village proper has about 3,000 people and gets 4 million tourist visits every summer. There are a number of towns on the coast that are just as pretty that get almost no tourists, but they are a way from anything. Eastport, for example, is beautiful, but it is a four drive from anything. Thanks for watching.

I have been walking in Acadia this month. Today on a 3 mile walk I encountered one person. I will be in Bar Harbor on Tuesday the 28th and will shoot another video there.

The ban the town of Bar Harbor passed goes into effect next year unless they lose in court. So I expect some cruise lines are changing their routes already.

They have....schedules for 2024 on many cruises in the area have already changed to Portland. Makes no sense to me.@@todddunn945

Very true. July and August are the high season and you absolutely can't count on getting a room without a reservation. Plus it is very expensive to stay there during high season.

It looked like there were hotel rooms available all summer this year. That said the standard advice is to book a year or so in advance. Lots of people rent houses now instead of staying in hotels. We get a different crowd in the Fall than in the summer. In summer there are lots of families and in Fall it is most older couples and younger couples without children.

If the government shuts down the park will be closed. For example the park loop road, the Cadillac Mountain road and the Road to the Bass Harbor lighthouse will all be closed as will all parking areas. If you can park outside the park you can walk or cycle in, but there won't be any park personnel to help you if something goes wrong. I don't know if the island explorer buss will be operating. The park campgrounds will be closed. That is what I have heard and that is what happened last time. State roads that go through the park will remain open because they do not belong to the park.

I don't know what the new building just past the stop light is, but I suspect it is a new hotel. The building going up on Cottage across from the supermarket and next door to city hall is a hotel with restaurant. It was a hole in the ground last year at this time. It looks like they are planning for opening next summer. I plan to do more driving videos around the island this fall as well as visits to all of the towns on the island. Thanks for watching.

Basically, the Hannaford supermarket, Walgreens, the Shermans book store, a couple of restaurants reel pizza, the criterion theater, a couple of taverns and the post office. Pretty much everything targeted at tourists will be closed. Which restaurant stay open changes from year to year. Bar Harbor is pretty dead outside tourist season.

Yes although some of the cities have typical city crime.

Portland is safe ya no and which state is very safe us

Buy a portable fake parking meter and bring it with you on the next visit. Just make sure that it says "Paid." (!)
