I'm from Germany and I would even argue that the entire world needs Obama's sanity to stop the current threat to fragile Democracies worldwide. Obama said it eloquently that what happens in America has an effect on the rest of the world. If Trump comes back our extreme far-right party - that literally parrots Trumpism for 7 years - will rise more. Fortunately we have a stable multiple party system that limits the threat and general sense of responsibility due to the past but not all other countries are as aware. Please support the Democrats, even if they seem disappointing to one support them for the aforementioned reasons.

As a kid I grew up in a conservative town where everyone voted McCain and Romney. Even I voted Romney a month after I turned 18. I just accepted what people said about not liking Obama. But I remember watching him and Mrs. Obama on TV and their girls and wondering why exactly people don’t like them as people - regardless of his policies. I remember during science class in 8th grade he gave a speech that was televised to all school children across the country and I thought he had nice things to say, even though I knew I wasn’t *supposed* to like him. Even when I was 20 and living in DC I didn’t pay much attention to Obama or politics beyond visiting the White House. It wasn’t until I started my international relations degree (and also saw how bad trump was) in 2017 that I became politically involved and kind of mourned that I lived through 8 years of Obama without appreciating any of it. I’m glad he’s still very politically active though and I always enjoy watching his interviews either on shows like this or the Pod Save America podcast. He wasn’t perfect, and no president has been perfect, but he was what I think we needed at the time. The calm before the storm.

@M Y I love this! Also as Black man, it was inspiring seeing Obama get elected. Many people considered that an impossible task for him. Growing up I had teachers that thought it was impossible for me to become a Software Engineer. I'm now a junior in college with a third internship secured. Seeing people like Obama reach the position they did, taught me not to listen to doubters (who at times are in positions of authority).

This is an incredible point! He is either incredibly well-informed, or he does his research, or both. He frames the questions intelligently, often with humor that doesn't detract from anything, and is willing to be challenging on follow up. I certainly hope, whatever he does next, he also continues to important interviews like this.

I know we're all starstruck by Obama's personality in contrast with today's politics but looking beyond that... as someone who has lived in and around some deeply conservative communities for years, the points that Obama makes in first two thirds of this interview are THE roadmap for progressives to bridge the political divide and cool down American politics. And it is progressives who have to do the bridging; leaders on the far right profit from polarization, and centrists don't have much power in our current system. Hopefully the right people are listening.

The left has been placating the right for decades and the right has only gotten worse as a result. You don't get a bully's respect by giving them your lunch money everyday. It's time for the left to lead on the issues because in every blind poll, left wing policies are always more popular than conservatives.

Such a passionate and well thought out speech process. Great to hear smart people have a level headed conversation in a way that speaks to the general masses.

Trevor asks the most beautifully articulated, well thought-out questions of any interviewer I’ve ever seen. Always able to disarm his guests with empathy and comedic relief. Yay! Glad you voted! For me, it was my 8th grade U.S. history teacher. The last thing he said us on the last day of school was "If there's an election you're eligible to vote in-whether it's for U.S. President or city dogcatcher-and I find out you haven't voted, I will come to your house, break down your door, and personally drag you to the polls."
