The Baratza Encore has been a long standing staple of entry level value in the home coffee grinder world, and is awarded the price of “first coffee grinder” for a staggering number of friends I have in the specialty coffee space. Today, we take a look at the successor. A new version of the Baratza Encore dubbed the Encore ESP, named for its added capabilities when it comes to dialing in espresso. Pleasantly surprised at the espresso quality on this and filter quality too. Bought this and ran it though its paces before giving it away and it did not fail to impress in making grinds for pretty good quality espresso.

I appreciate you reviewing this as it comes out of the box. There is a single dose hopper for this grinder which is great but should it really factor into the review since that comes separately? Probably not. Love the videos man

Another review mentioned the bottom burr rattling due to the quick knob release coming undone easily. Also that the hopper vibrates so much the lid comes off. Have you had these issues?

Great review! It does seem like a great value. I have a regular Encore. Have been wondering about the quality of M2 vs. M3… mostly whether a coffee commoner like myself can taste the difference.

From what I’ve heard from others, on filter yes slightly, on espresso unlikely

You should take a look at the Turin SK40. It’s basically the SD40 but with lower rpm’s and stepless. It’s also in the $200 budget and I chose it over the encore esp and fellow opus. Couldn’t be happier

For espresso, absolutely. I never recommend hand grinders for espresso. It is simply too much work. If you’re going to be brewing mainly filter, I’d recommend going with the 1ZPresso

I would love to know your thoughts on comparing the Baratza Encore ESP vs Varia VS3. I would be upgrading from the internal grinder in the Breville Barista Pro and I have been considering pre-ordering on Eight Ounces site. I also understand that the new M2 burrs are now being sold in BBP machines in Asia and this would be the equivalent of the Encore ESP. Do you know if it is possible to change out the burr in the BBP?

Great question. I’ve never considered any of the Barista line, simply because I have a superior grinder already. I don’t own an espresso machine, but have thought about it. More appealing to me, is the Bambino, since I already have that quality grinder. If the Barista line’s grinders were upgradable, however…. A grinder that was “good” rather than merely “passable” would make the Impress appealing, as it would allow a cleaner bar than a Bambino/grinder combo with a superior workflow.

Thank you for your review. Hypothetical question: You are about to prepare an espresso and about to grind your cup. To the left you have the new Encore, and to the right you have the tried and true Breville SGP. Which grinder would you grab to prepare your espresso shot?

I’m not sure if there have been any updates to the SGP since the model I own. But assuming they’re the same, I’d pick the Encore ESP in a flash

Do you have an idea of about how many seconds the shot time will differ from click to click on the ESP? Example, my hand grinder at 20 clicks gives me a 25 second shot (+/-2s for variance in puck prep, humidity etc) and 19 clicks gives me 28 seconds. So, 3 seconds, typically. Now, I know the particular coffee and roast level will come into play. Just curious if we are talking a 3-5 second difference between clicks or something like 10-12. My tennis elbow is killing me with this hand grinding, lol. I tend to like tighter shots over a longer period of time. IE: 2:1 at say 28-32 seconds but my wife likes more of a 22-26 second shot. So, I hope there is more than one usable click, lol. But for the price I can live with a 16.8 gram dose for her and a 17 for me if that is what it takes to slow down a shot. Thanks for the video! Always look forward to them. Would love some dialing in videos with these grinders. But not truncated like many do, the actual process of each click used etc. Loved your past dialing in videos.

I haven't personally tried the Kinu, but from what I've heard I imagine it would have a slight quality edge but obviously a MAJOR convenience downside. Hand grinding for espresso is no easy task

Is it worth spending the extra money on a Sette 30 or 270 or a comparable grinder? I get the sense that this grinder is "good for the money" and not really good...like you might outgrow it quickly. But maybe I am wrong. Also, can you get an attachment to mount a portafilter directly to the grinder?

I would genuinely take this grinder any day over a Sette 30. It’s quieter, has better dialing in for espresso, and has a better form factor. No, portafilter forks aren’t something that’s available yet for this unit, and I would expect them to be any time soon

I bought a bellow hopper for it and didn't do anything. I get too many grounds stuck in the motor where you assemble the container, about 50 percent of grounds stuck. I had to turn the grinder upside down to clean some of it, i might need to buy an air compressor or vacuum. How do you handle this?

Neither are designed to be used with bellows. This is the reason you're getting grounds into the motor. The air path isn't sealed I recommend you used RDT and not bellows

I have this grinder but it disappointed me, I can’t give consistent shot back to back, the extraction time changes all the time plus I had to add the two shims right out the box

This grinder doesn't require shims to grind for espresso. If you're having consistency issues, that's down to your puck prep, no the grind quality out of this grinder.

@@LifestyleLab_ thanks for replying:) when i got it the first time i couldn’t go any finer and i was using freshly roasted beans and im using wdt spring loaded tamper and aiming for 21 g in 38 out also i see that when I reduce one click reduces almost 10 seconds which is crazy

Don’t feel buyers remorse! You got a FANTASTIC grinder for the money. Like I said, the differences I was speaking on were from direct A B tests, and even then we’re very minor.
