Barbara Strozzi had two of the best composers of the early baroque as teachers: Monteverdi (probably) and Cavalli, so it's not surprising that she wrote music of the highest quality, which easily stands next to the best male composers of the time. Francesca Peri was an equally fine composer who had her father, Jacopo, Caccini et al. as teachers (probably). The baroque was a good time period for female composers - no other century since has produced female composers of their quality.

a perfect point to make, thanks. It seems clear that among the humanist cultural elite, (more liberal lefties....)the question of gender was not really such a big issue. Quite a few composers, and also the painters; Artemisia Gentileschi, Sonofbisa whatshername....and so on. .... also interesting to see quite a number of B Strozzi pieces up here on the list. This cut of her music is particularly poignant and beautiful.

nei miei studi liceali (anni 60), in parte colpeveli insegnanti e testi, ho snobbato la letteratura del '600: mi chiedevo perchè dell' abisso in negativo del confronto con scultura pittura musica architettura; mi sono ricreduto leggendo i testi delle cantate e di altre forme musicali del tempo e ho capito l' unità profonda, musica compresa, delle arti nel '600, l'ultimo secolo di questa meravigliosa (la meraviglia è essenza nel barocco) unità: "voglio amarvi a dispetto del tempo e della sorte, sino alla morte"! Quanto lontane le cantate del '700 di Bach!

Unfortunately, if the performers haven't experienced roughly what the song is about, then they can't put experience into theri singing (despite their excellent technique and marvelous voice etc.). So even here, a kind of emotional core is missing. - I can't remember the performer now, who fascinated me several years ago with her rich and deep emotionality and at the same time with her singing qualities...

Ma si tratta di passioni universali che un artista non possa sentire intensamente; il testo si può dire analogo nella forma e nel contenuto alla prosa poetica del coevo Sakespeare: è come rivivere nel canto la passione di Giulietta per Romeo e, come nel testo poetico, in modo speculare, la passione di Romeo per Giulietta

@@giuseppenegri4750 Well, not only the artist, but also the listener can contain only those feelings for which he has "antennas", so to speak. From which it follows that no one will ever cover the whole range of positions and nuances etc. (And that applies to both the music and the text.)

베네치아의 오페라 작곡가 카발리의 여제자 바바라 스트로치 : 당시 그녀가 직접 노래를 불렀으며 다수의 성악작품을 남겼으며 그중 칸타타가 유명하다. 당시에도 "카나리아의 지저귐처럼 달콤한 그녀의 노래를 듣고 있노라면 새벽의 서광이 펼쳐지는 듯하다" 라고 평을 받았다.

I took a class about the history of women in music about 15 years ago. A lot has happened since then in my life and I have forgotten most of the composers. I remember Hildy and Barbara, but so much of the class escapes me. Somebody refresh me. Who should I revisit?
