That Wednesday, in Texas method in general, doesn't make sense to me and I'd like to know what the reasoning behind it is. It sounds like the Wednesday is still hard enough to impede the recovery, and I don't understand why would you want to get in the way of adaptation that needs to happen between Monday and Friday (so that the Friday can keep going up). I understand that you want to practice the movement more, but at the expense of recovery? Couldn't you, as a variation, instead of touching Monday and Friday workouts, just make Wednesday an easy day? The other thing is that older people, like my self, need more days to recover in general, so an alternative, could you just extend your week, from seven to nine or even ten days, by adding an extra day of rest between the workouts?

Great question. First, some coaches move to a 4-day split, which eliminates the Wednesday slot in general, so you have a volume slot for all the lifts and an intensity slot for all the lifts. That being said, the Wednesday is actually light. When you look at the weights on the paper, they will appear easy. They're only hard because of your fatigue accumlated from Friday. The Wednesday slot delivers enough stress to not detrain plus practice, while not deliver too much stress to continue to drive fatigue. It's admittedly a balancing act. You might consider looking at the Fitness-Fatigue model: elitetrack.com/article_files/fitness-fatigue.pdf

Love the logical series. Question: if 9 weekly sets for squats is the minimum for strength/hypertrophy on NLP (3x5) and we move to Texas method for potentially less volume (4x5 MON, 2-3x5 WED, 1x5 FRI) aren’t we sacrificing hypertrophy with less total volume? Should there be default back offs on Friday to make up for tonnage?

We've addressed this in older podcast (look up technique series).

One question, if you were programming power cleans and chin ups on old man TM would the chins still be Wednesday and the cleans on Friday as per the standard version?
