That was the only thing I didn't like. Margot Robbie was the perfect person to cast to make that point. To hear one of the actual most stereotypically and actually beautiful women in the world, also feels like she's not pretty or good enough... Like, if she doesn't feel pretty, then the concept of pretty is fucked. And it is. I felt like the joke took away from the punch of hearing Margot of all people - being, in that moment, all people - say that.

@@torihobsoncpt I have to agree because while Margot isn't representing the " average " woman dealing with being crushed by the insane standards of beauty it does represent how even the most stunningly beautiful women might not see herself as others do and can have self esteem issues . The deeper message is that no matter how beautiful a woman is she still can feel deeply insecure about her looks ...ie ANY woman can be subject to these issues ...not just the average woman. The standards and pressure we put on ourselves just because others say that's who we must be to be considered attractive ARE ridiculous.

In this scene, the way that Margot represents so many women who have felt this way is both an amazing performance and also unfortunate for how many woman have felt exactly as her Barbie feels. No matter who you are and no matter what you look like, you are absolutely beautiful and you are good enough. :)

Speaking as someone with imposter syndrome, the way America Ferrera inflects her voice when she says 1:57, it’s one of those moments that blurs the line between the character and the actress. There isn’t a single moment where she doesn’t believe what she’s saying, which is ultimately a true testament to Greta Gerwig’s vision.

@@craigledger4645 Sorry, this is just not correct at all. Emily Blunt was far better than America was in her role. The Color Purple is still coming. So is Saltburn, Holdovers, American Fiction. There's a LOT of performances still coming. American Ferrera is great and she might even win, but she's not head and shoulders above anyone else. That's just wrong and really narrow minded. And you really want to act like America was better in this movie than Ryan Gosling was? Fucking please.

Fabulous performances by both America Ferrera and Margot Robbie! 👏 When Barbie was finally able to express not feeling good enough, I started to sob. I have felt not good enough in my own life for the past decade. To see that kind of vulnerability on screen was really something. And the empowering speech that followed made me feel validated. Such a great film. 💗

I think it's profound having Margot, of all people, say she doesn't feel pretty. I get it. Even though the physical is somewhat objective, it's also completely subjective. A lot of the "feeling" of beauty comes from within yourself. I used to think I was hideous for some reason when I was younger. But now, 6 years later, I look back at old pictures of myself and think, "wow i looked so good..." My skin was clear, great cheek bones, slim, abs, great smile, beautiful eyes. Now that I'm older I can see all these really great things that I didn't even care about when I was younger because I was comparing myself to someone else. And I think when I'm in my 50s, I will look at my currently 30 year old self and probably be jealous of a lot of things I'm currently insecure about. That perspective really helps me. Although we, the viewers, look at Barbie as gorgeous, it doesn't matter unless she feels it for herself. She has to overcome that internally. No amount of compliments can give it to her. She has to recognize her own beauty and worth and only then will she embody it and believe it. Very strong message.

I feel the exact same way as Barbie. I’m not good at anything, I’m not a pro. I can make nice things, I can follow instructions but I’m not a trailblazer. I’m not good enough for anything. You know when you see a nice dish and it inspires you to go to culinary school and then you make perfect dishes? That could never be me, not even if I tried my best. My best is never good enough for anyone or anything, seriously. It’s why I always sit at home, why I’m alone. I’m not smart enough to be interesting, either.

@ 3:50 is true Like just because Barbie dolls look like human women they NEED to be good role models and can’t be about superficial things like makeup or shopping? I watched this movie with my girlfriend in theatres and... As a man I thought this scene was great, because in a weird way I do relate to a few of the points made, not on the same intended level of course because this movie was written by a woman, directed by a woman and was likely made for women. But expections of being exceptional and immediately knowing your purpose and direction in life is a universal message, because most people simply don't know it yet. Because expectations of men and women from the perspectives of men and women will always be expectations that we may eventually force onto ourselves. This scene is simply a woman's perspective on the impossible expectations they experience, a perspective I never thought I could ever understand since I'm not a woman. But I think since so many people can relate to this rant is proof of the fact that it's not a unique experience, and while that's sad, it does give me hope that both men and women can/will understand eachother better because of it.

I admire this movie the more I watch it for what Greta and all her gang acomplished, it was her vision, an auteur vision, many details that makes it indivual and yet spoke to massive audiences while spelling some truths that should be already the norm and yet they aren't. This movie is particularly valuable for young kids, is a manual for basic understanding on humanity.

That speech made me sad because being a woman should be beautiful... but the reality is, it's the toughest thing to be... a woman who knows herself and loves herself is hard and not often seen or found. But it doesn't have to be a myth or a mission! This scene was really good but the real thing will be to see how it impacts ppl truly.

1:13 I have mixed feelings about this movie overall. I love this scene and the song “What was I made for” has become one of my newest favorites. During this scene there was a guy who laughed so hard and loud at this that everyone laughed with him. The atmosphere in the theater had been tense because people weren’t sure what to make of the movie yet. Props to that guy, he lightened the mood. Hope he’s doing well. Also, I still can’t unhear Fawn from the Tinkerbell in this scene. America Ferrara voiced her in the first movie.

This movie so so good, obviously it wouldn't please the Oscar's academy because they're probably a bunch of white old males, but it's brilliant!! This scene shows that nothing is ever good enough for women that even the role model of beauty, which Barbie has always represented, gets affected by the beauty standards and the pressure put on women in society.

I’m crying right now because this is me…I can’t seem to do anything right…I’m so exhausted…I’m trying so hard to be a good mother, a good wife…trying to keep a cool face but I’m not allowed to be sad or be emotionally vulnerable because I have to be strong.
