In this video I explain how a lot of Ford 3.5L V-6 and 3.7L V-6 water pumps leak. This water pump design can be found on a number of Ford products that come with the 3.5L V-6 and 3.7L V-6. The particular vehicle featured in the video is a 2007 Ford Edge equipped with a 3.5L. This water pump design can not only be found in the Ford Edge but also the Ford Taurus and and Explorer ( and I failed to mention the Ford Flex) that come equipped with the 3.5L engine or the 3.7L engine. This water pump designed was used for many years from roughly 2007-2018. (maybe longer) There may be slight variations in design from year to year but the concept of how the water pump leaks is the same between the years. The water pump is timing chain driven which means that it is located inside the engine behind the timing cover. A lot of vehicles out there that have an externally mounted water pump, unlike the Ford 3.5L and 3.7L mentioned above, are equipped with a weep hole that allows coolant to leak directly from the water pump. But, because this water pump on the 3.5L and 3.7L is located in the engine it can't leak like a normal water pump. The coolant has to be channeled outside the engine so that the coolant does not leak into the engine oil. In this video I explain the design of this weep hole and how coolant is channeled out the side of the engine block through a special passage. I also, show it to you.
Now, while it is typical for this water pump to leak from the weep hole, they can also leak into the engine due to catastrophic failure. The vehicle featured in the video has this problem and I explain how coolant got into the engine oil and mixed with it. (It's bad news). The bearing inside the water pump went out and caused play to develop on the shaft where the pulley mounts. The coolant leaked right through this.
Note: This is just two ways in which this water pump can leak. I suppose the gasket could also leak but I've not seen that yet. The two ways mentioned in the video are usually how this water pump fails. (in my experience) Also, there is an upper weep hole that is directed into the intake valley. These water pumps can also leak into the intake valley.
Also, This is not 3.5L V-6 Ecoboost used in a lot of late model Ford F-150s. (check your manual to see if the information in the video applies.) If you notice that your engine has a water pump that is externally mounted then this video does not apply to your vehicle. Just take a look and make sure. I think I'm pretty accurate with the list of vehicles and engine sizes mentioned above that have this type of water pump. However, you need to check me. Make sure. Verify that the vehicle you are working on is similar to the ones mentioned in the video. A repair manual is a must to be sure of this.
At about the 2:11 mark I mention the freeze plug is not available. Well, its not actually a freeze plug. It looks similar to one, but it's actually just a plug that goes into the weep hole to restrict the weep hole. It doesn't totally block it, it just restricts it. I don't know if that part is available. That being said you don't need one, unless you took it out.
Here is a link to a video describing the diagnostic process I went through to figure this out.

My gosh. Thank you for posting this. We just had some very low temps and I thought I had cracked the block. Only reason I gave pause to that theory was because the block was dry where the water jackets were. I was scratching my head baffled trying to figure out where the leak was coming from 😂. I was going to pull the trigger on a reman’d engine tonight. This video just saved me thousands of dollars.

First off Thanks for the video! Had my water pump changed 2.5 years ago which was an extremely costly repair and just noticed last night that it’s leaking from this exact area 🤦🏽‍♂️ I check my fluids often and maintain my vehicle very well. Had no indication that this was coming again. I love my 13 Taurus so much but I don’t think I will ever buy another vehicle with this engine 🥴

I’m just chiming in here. I have a 2013 Edge. Leaking coolant today and saw this video stating the water pump may need replaced. Bought this at 30k in 2015. Never thought to check coolant for a change out like you’d do an oil change. Quoted roughly 2k to replace. Ugh - sucks. Thanks for the great video. So you took you car to someone who didn’t know 💩 about your car or its design. And instead of doing a simple google search you just let it leak in blissful ignorance. The suit in Canada went nowhere. The internal pump may not be a good idea but it’s not a bad design. You’re just pissed because you are incapable of changing the pump yourself or had to pay to have it done.

Just today I felt my MKX begin chugging. Looked down and saw my temps spiked. Coolant was below the reservoir. I put more in but temps shot back up in minutes. I put more in and watched it start dripping seconds after I started it. I started poking around with my light and saw a spurt like a jugular coming out in the notch above the radiator. Looks to be right in that spot. So what does that go for in 2024?

VERY GOOD. THE BEST ABOUT THIS. THANK YOU. JUST SUBSCRIBED. Look forward to your re-build. Our 2012 Pristine Lincoln MKX AWD has the 3.7 litre Duratec V6. Same 3.5 design setup.. 93K on the clock. At 45K one time MICROLON treated everything. Engine, Trans, Rear differential. PTU, A/C, Coolant and Power Steering. This is our 5TH vehicle treated with MICROLON. Use for years with competition firearms and airplane engines. Microlon is FAA and MIL-SPEC (7) certified. Change oil 4K miles with Liqui Moly 100% synthetic. Engine Flush with Ligui Moly prior to change. OEM Air Filter change also at a local trusted Oiler. Our Lincoln Dealership does our fluid changes, save engine oil changes: OEM Trans 30K miles, Rear Differential (Red Line Syn Gear oil) 75K miles, PTU (Red Line High Temp Syn Gear oil) superior to the Ford stuff. Evacuated/filled 25K miles, OEM Coolant Flush (new Yellow variant) every 25K miles, A/C evac every 2 yrs., Power Steering flush OEM every 2 yrs., Brake Fluid OEM Change/Flush annually. The Coolant is manual change stated every 30K miles. I do every 25K miles due to the water pump issue. WEEP HOLE checked regularly. I feel confident the pump should last with how our vehicle is maintained and that Ford improved the pump's bearings and a new dual sprocket design. Lincoln states the PTU (12 oz oil) never needs changing. Lifetime fluid they say. NUTS! The PTU resides 8" from the Catalytic Converter on one side and bolted to the trans on the other with a cheap aluminum heat shield between the PTU and the Converter. The oil boils! These babies fry the oil. Model sales to the middle east I'm told the PTU is radiator coolant cooled. If you own a AWD Edge, MKX, Flex etc.. Check out the horror stories on KZfaq. It is a money generator for the dealerships. Say $1k plus to fix. Ours died @18K miles. Warranty covered.. Hence the PTU research and attention.. The unit on our model has no drain plug. My family claims I'm compulsive about our MKX. Maybe so. However it is a reliable safe economically sound vehicle to own. We average 22 city 25 highway MPG. Not bad for its age, weight and size. A family member's 09 FLEX just lost his engine due to the water pump failure. A 75% club owner . I am of the 25% owners club who maintain to owners manual spec and then some our vehicle. The 75% owners club do not and suffer financially. Our Lincoln dealer does all the additional Liqui Moly stuff for me: • Catalytic Converter cleaner every 10K miles. • DI JECTRON, direct injection valve & combustion chamber cleaner every 2.4 K miles • Air Conditioning Cleaner and Bio Sanitizer. Annually • Fuel Injection Cleaner every 1.2K miles. Liqui Moly calls there products "vitamins for your vehicle". All these Liqui Moly products work as promised beautifully and do not damage seals etc..You see and feel it. Results? Super clean running everything. Bore scopes of our valves and combustion chamber are remarkably clean. Normally they are filthy gooey power robbing crud on everything. Preventative and Improvement items we have done so far: • Serpentine and belt replacements @ 60K miles • All Coolant hoses replaced @ 92K miles • Replaced to LED all interior and exterior lights. • Off Road HID super duper flood white head lamps and HID Fogs replacing those pathetic H4 units. • Running Michelin Cross Climate 2 tyres. Amazing soft ride especially on our 20" rims. We like our MKX. Fit finish etc. A fuel buring Oracle we say. Other than the design flaws (Water Pump, PTU) our normally aspired DURATEC V6 is a champ. Mid range torque comes on like a stem engine. Power is predicibly amazing . Our MKX is a comfy luxury cruiser. Fair Winds and Following Seas

@bradleysteeves7891
@bradleysteeves7891 7 ай бұрын
This can be prevented by changing your coolant as recommended. The wster pump has two rubber gaskets. The outer one gets eaten by coolant with high acid levels causing the coolant to drip out the weep hole. If you see your overflow dank low or coolant drip. .. then its too late you need to change your waterpump ASAp. If not the high acid coolant will now eat the inner rubber gasket leading to coolant gettibg into your engine oil. Then new engine. All preventable if you change he coolant as recommended. Dont change your coolant for 5+ years this is what happend. Dont blame ford for faulty design..

Had this happen to me also & did Countless Hours of Research & Reading.. I read MANY testimonials of people that Never had a issue, some 300k+ miles and swore by doing Coolant Flush/Changes.. I read of two different fleet mechanics that went from having to do countless Engine Replacements to just Coolant Maintenance.. I also read from the consensus of Mechanics the CORRECT Coolant is Vital !! So NO Additives, NO topping off with what ever is laying around.. So if you're not original owner , your wife or someone posdibly got a $19.99 Oil Change at Stiff U Lube & there's any possibility it's been topped off with one of the Coolants that supposedly don't play well with the Seals I'd Flush & Start from scratch and use the Recommended Motorcraft Big $$ Coolant.. Double Check yourself either in the Manual or a Ford Site because I even had the Dealership try to sell me the wrong crap once saying "its all the same".. 🖕Not !! Also one last word of warning, there has been instances where the Weep Hole doesn't make it obvious and I also saw (hopefully rare) instances where the inner seal went before the outer pumping all the coolant into the engine and zero weeping.. So My BEST Advice is Check Oil frequently, Check for Color on dipstick, Color on white paper towel after wiping it, Note the Level, If the Level is Ever Higher than the Last Time.. That's an UH OH !! Oh and of course the same with the Coolant level and color.. If you feel you have reason for concern that you might have a problem.. Change the oil and have it tested.. Honestly I just thought of this, never heard of testing antifreeze for oil but I would think it could be done, possibly even by just leaving some in a clear cup for a while to look for separation ?? Idk..

#1 Did the Engine end up surviving & if so how many miles now ? (Congratulations if it Did !!) #2 I just want to warn watchers/readers that I have seen instances where the Weep Hole didn't Weep giving an obvious heads up prior to 😲🤑.. It's a strange hard to explain set-up, it looks like in theory they (thought) they designed it so one seal would fail before others and it would start pissing out the Weep Hole saying look at me ! Problem over here ! But if I remember correctly sometimes the destroyed seal blocks the hole or they just fail in the wrong order.. Clean Correct Antifreeze, No Additives, Frequent Height & Color Checks of both the Antifreeze & Oil.. Keep a note of level, if it mysteriously raises that's BAD !! Good luck !!

Just a little over 140k. I'd say around 100k would be a good time to at least monitor the old water pump. Make it a point to check the side of the block for a coolant "snail trail" every time the oil is changed. (of course you should always check for leaks when doing an oil change no matter what th mileage.) They usually weep when they go bad. Mine just went out catastrophically. While these water pumps do go out the same way mine did I don't see it happen all the time.

Looking at this from both an engineering and business point-of-view, I am not sure that it is a bad idea to put the water pump inside the engine. I may be wrong on this, but it seems to me that since the chain will be in constant motion to sync the cam and crankshafts, it makes a lot of sense to exploit this to create cooling without additional energy requirements. That likely will help with the overall fuel efficiency of the car. And, since it seems that most of the water pump failures would take place above 100K miles, Ford business leaders may have thought that after 100+K a car does not owe anyone anything, and that if someone wants to run a car above 100K and onward, it is reasonable to expect them to absorb the costs. Not defending Ford on this. I loved the water pump placement until I hated it. But I am trying to leave myself out of this and see it from an engineering and business perspective.

My 11 Taurus SEL is in the shop with the exact same issue. No warning! No check engine lights, nothing. 142K miles. I will say to anyone worried about this failure happening and trying to prevent it, pay attention to herky jerky very random transmission shifts. Why? Once the coolant REALLY starts to leak it sprays toward the tranny. Also long before the catastrophe, I would hear a very high pitch whistle sound generated in the abyss of that 3.5L engine. You can hear that sound on the freeway when there's a wall to the left of the drivers side or in the drive thru of your favorite restaurant. Other than that, its not a matter of if its a matter of when, WHEN I SAY! 😝 I'M SO GLAD I GOT A WARRANTY. I was told today that they are replacing the engine because its easier than repairing the failed one.
