LYRICS 2A BEAUTIFUL SONG, IV LOVED FOR OVER 20YRS
You don't bring me flowers
You don't sing me love songs
You hardly talk to me anymore
When you come thru the door
At the end of the day
I remember when you couldn't wait to love me
Used to hate to leave me
Now after lovin' me late at night
When it's good for you, babe
And you're feelin' alright
Well you just roll over and turn out the light
And you don't bring me flowers anymore
It used to be so natural to talk about forever
But "used to be's" don't count anymore
They just lay on the floor
'Til we sweep them away
Baby, I remember
All the things you taught me
I learned how to laugh
And I learned how to cry
Well, I leared how to love
And I learned how to lie
So you'd think I could learn
How to tell you goodbye
You don't bring me flowers anymore
Well, you'd think I'd could learn
How to say tell you goodbye
You don't say you need me
You don't sing me love songs
You don't bring me flowers anymore

It was the first time they sang this together. For the album, due to professional commitments, they each performed their parts on separate coasts, and a recording company mixed them. This is one of the top truly magical moments in television history.

It has to do with A TON…!The fact that you are commenting “what that got to do with it” especially considering the abhorrent recent hostility toward Israel and the Jews. I leave you to your own personal “ Quiet”opinion…. I knew in my head what your profile would be, age, demographic, political affiliation, IQ, and ability to be EMPATHETIC. Normadezmond6017. Maybe you meant it differently…and you know the history Judea…..Jews have been in ISRAEL since Jesus!they have roots to to core of the earth and let’s not forget that itty bitty thing called the HOLOCAUST. We should be SUPPORTING ALL THE ICONS, ENTERTAINERS, and DIRECTORS. If you don’t decide to do that and support Palestine…may the WRATH OF GOD OR ALLAH CUSH YOU LIKE A BUG!!! She played this song all the time... when I was a young person..I am 50 now...her marriage to my father wasn't a fairytale...my mom wanted to be "cherished". she would tell me repeatedly...my father did cherish her, they just couldn't communicate.. yet they were together over 50 years...until he died at their home in 2010....she died earlier this year... According to Casey Kasem, it wasn't even a duet originally. Each artist coincidentally released it as a solo song on their own albums, and a Louisville, Kentucky DJ named Gary Guthrie edited a bootleg mashup that got airplay and attention. We actually have him to thank for them deciding to revisit this, and record it as a duet.

I was merely a child when I saw this live on television that night. I remember how it was all over the radio at the time. Looking back now at this colossal moment for the Grammys that I’d like to point out that this performance is as much about the time as it was performed as it was about the song itself. If you notice the audience applauds at least four or five times throughout the song. Those are the times when audiences appreciated the artist even more than now I think and they showed it by randomly applauding. Those applause, in those moments, you know where exactly the audience were feeling it. Anybody who went to the movie theater in the 1970s and the early 1980s will remember when audiences used to cheer at the screen, used to applaud at the screen, who used to scream at the screen and I mean for the most enthusiastic of films not just some horror movie. Films like “Rocky”, “Grease”, “Superman”, “Star Wars”. Audiences don’t applaud like that anymore. They just don’t respond like that anymore but I still do. ❤

A good bit of acting going on as well as singing. The whole performance was first class. They start out far apart from each other, then as the song progresses, they get closer and closer to each other, until they reconnect at the end. The record itself - before the performance - hints at a reconciliation between the two by the way they first sing the line "So you'd think I could learn how to tell you goodbye," in contrast to the way they sing the line the second time. They first sing it in syncopated time (for the musically unlearned, that means one starts to sing the line and then the other starts singing the same line before the first one gets done singing it. Kind of singing "around", as in row row row your boat), and then the second time they sing the line at the same time. They are then getting back in sync with each other, which hints to a reconciliation. At least, that's how I choose to view the song. The physical contact between the two at the end is more or less a confirmation of the reconciliation.

They just don’t sing ‘em like this anymore! Wow, such an amazing song sung by two of the most dynamic vocalists of the 1970s. This one and only live performance was from the Grammy Awards Ceremony. It aired February 27th, 1980. It’s so wonderful to be able to go back and watch old performances like this and countless others on KZfaq. I remember watching this as a kid in ‘80 thinking 🤔 I’d love to see that again…and now we can 😊

Interesting background to this song (excerpt from Wikipedia): The roots of the duet version, as chronicled in myriad Streisand and Diamond biographies as well as Streisand's Just for the Record box set, revolve around WAKY-AM/Louisville KY program director, Gary Guthrie, who spliced the two solo tracks together as a going away present to his wife, whom he had just divorced. As the real life fairytale behind the song unfolded, it triggered a media buzz worldwide from Good Morning America and People magazine to the BBC. Interest in the unofficial version of the duet caused such a clamor on the retail level that Columbia Records was compelled to bring Streisand and Diamond into the studio to record an "official" version in October 1978. The song reached number one on the Hot 100 chart for two non-consecutive weeks in December 1978, producing the third number-one hit for both singers
