The OG version, Barbra's, is definitely filled with personal reflection. Even though Barbra was only 15 months old when her father died, her connection with him throughout her life was a deep and spiritual one; primarily because she didn't have a close relationship with her mother who remarried a man who, even though his surname was "Kind," was very much less than as a step-father to Barbra. Barbra pretty much went out on her own at the age of 16 singing in local gay bars and other joints... and the rest is history. You really MUST watch Yentl. As I said, Barbra had a very strong spiritual connection to her real father, yet the only lone photo of her with her Dad as she would tell the story, was one with her arm around his tombstone later in her life. When she was trying to obtain the rights to the play "Yentl" by Isaac Bashevis Singer, which had been gnawing at her for years to turn into a movie, she came upon that lone photo and noticed next to her Dad's grave was another tombstone with the deceased name "Anshel... the name of the character in Singer's play... the character she would eventually play in the movie version. Folks familiar with Yiddish would call that "beshert"... meant to be. The closing number in the movie, "Piece of Sky" mashed up with "Papa..." and "Where Is It Written"... will blow the top right off your head. Thanks for a great reaction and look forward to more Barbra. 😀

Donna, you beat me to the story regarding the name "Anshel" on the headstone next to her father's. A sign indeed. ❤

You definitely have to react to "A piece of sky" audio next (from "Yentl" too). One of her most iconic song with an iconic final note.

God bless you for doing this reaction. Not only have I had an obsession with Barbra since I was 10 and saw her in What's Up Doc. She is BRILLIANT. This movie came out my freshman year of college. To say I con ected with the music is a powerful u derstatement. Saw this in a theatre over 20 times...own it on vinyl. Masterful. You would LOVE Piece of Sky.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Yes this song is so heartful. Barbra sings it as her prayer to her father who passed when she was a toddler.

I'm sorry for your loss. My father also died this past year and this song does have a special resonance. The melody's very much like something one might hear in shul, but sung by a cantor you could only dream of.

In real life, Barbara lost her dad at a young age and in the movie Yentl she loses her dad at the beginning of the movie and this is her character alone in the woods lighting a candle, hoping her dad is looking out for her and looking over her, etc.

There is something so innately Jewish, so Hebrew in its arrangement, ( the whole film's music catalogue actually) and it saddens me when ppl first hear it outside of that pure space. Listen to they almost rabbinical chanting under the vocals. There is so much more to Judaism than a religion. We too are diaspora.

No..Streisand is in a class of her own. Carey has extraordinary range, but none of the warmth or depth . Streisand tells a story when she sings. It always about being true to the lyrics. With Carey , like most singers today , it’s about showing off your voice.
