Thank you for the post, I never knew that about modern books, I only based on seller description and cover comparisons. Today while i was looking for another asm 800 variant I notice one seller advertise a comic as "first print," but after watching this I notice on the bar code it was actually a "fourth print!"I'm sure it was a mistake vs malicious, but you never know! So this video definitely helped a newbie like me on modern books. 👍👏

I enjoyed listening and learning something new. You also help to reaffirm many of my own personal beliefs in comic collecting. Crackerjack! I remember going to Wintercon last year and lamenting how few comic dealers there were. I was going through a box and found a beat copy of Tales of Suspense #52. It should have been a Wall book but there it was and while it also wasn’t a dollar book, I negotiated a price I was comfortable with. It was a book I’d always wanted...I wasn’t looking for it but there it was. It was the only comic I bought that day. I know most of my searches will typically end in failure, but that’s ok. I learn something, always, from my adventures...whether it is about the hobby, about meeting new people, about myself. Life is a story, isn’t it, and we should be as bold or courageous as can be.

That is a great story, start thinking that way more. Change what you said near the end "My searches will typically end in failure"..... Want to know why? Because you are putting that energy out there and it is coming back as the failure to confirm your belief... So change that mindset and focus on how happy you were to find something that you wanted so unexpectedly.... From now on say "Hmm, I wonder what I will find this time".... And once you go from saying it, to believing it to KNOWING IT.... You will be amazed at how you start finding things more and more.... Thanks you Alan for sharing your story, it is just beginning :).

I have talked to a few different comic store OWNERS and they told me they didnt know anything about the barcode numbers. I thought to myself, how can an owner NOT know about this? It blew my mind. How could I as a customer do a little research when learning how to get 1st prints and such and learn about it......and he is an owner for YEARS and not know. It blew my mind. Anyway, many many thanks for this video. Many many people out there dont even know about this, and these numbers are SOOOO critical in the world of modern comic collecting.

Also remember that not everyone that buys a comic store is a huge comic fan. The store (That went out of business this year) closest to me had an owner who had ZERO passion about comics and knew nothing about them. Probably why he went out of business ;)>. Someone like that would have definitely not known.

It is a great way to know if someone is trying to cheat you on Ebay. It won't work on every book but the ones it does, it will help you impress your other comic book friends :).

I have watched a lot of your videos, but I haven't seen much on older comic books. Is there a way to figure out what printing a comic is without opening a cover for older comic books? Also thanks to your channel I have learned quite a bit about taking care of my comics so thank you and keep up the great videos.

Well the good thing about older books like silver and bronze age is that they rarely ever made 2nd prints so it is not too hard to notice when they did. The times they did though, they did not put the price on the cover. So if you see a silver age book with a missing .10 or .12 on the cover, it is a reprint.

Hey man! Great vid, explained a lot to me 🙂 So, I don't know if you're still looking at posts on this video, but if you do, I got a couple of questions pertaining to certain comics I have in my tiny collection. To be more specific, I have some comics that feature a ">" mark behind the barcode... What does that mean? Furthermore, I'd like to know approximately what they would be worth, if anything, them being modern comics and all. All of them are near mint to mint condition, based on what I see (but I'm totally ignorant on the matter, so for all I know the shape isn't as good as I think), except for damages specified further: 1. Batman & Dracula: Red Rain 00116> Has a big crease in the front cover 2. Batman: Bloodstorm 00113 3. Batman: Crimson Mist 00111 4. Batman Year Two: Fear The Reaper 00111 5. Batman/Aliens: Book One 00111 Has slight wear on the length of the spine. 6. Batman: A Death In The Family 00122 7. Batman: Sword Of Azrael 00112> but here the > is not behind the numbers but behind the actual barcode at the bottom 8. Batman: Venom 00112> Same with the > mark as with previous comic 9. Batman: Gothic 00112> Here the > is right behind the numbers, not the barcode. 10. Batman versus Predator 00115> again with the > at the bottom behind the barcode... It would be great if you could share your thoughts on these, value-wise (I understand the impossibility of appraisal without examining them, but an approximate educated guess is really all I'm looking for, not an actual appraisal). Not that I actually expect them to be worth anything, but I'm curious. Thanks 😉

Top loaders add extra protection but should never be used alone. Comics should be in a bag & board and THEN place that into a top loader. Keep in mind they are expensive and it will add to the cost of buying comics you love... I tend to just add extra backing boards instead and get just as good protection without spending a lot of money.

Good info ! Let me run this question by you.... a few years back, DC put out a Justice League #1 book that had 50 different covers, one for each U.S. State (California, Texas, Missouri, etc). How did the barcode handle 50 (or 49) variant covers ?

Follow up point... I grabbed a stack of books I had handy to check the barcodes... it does work for "direct sales" editions (the kind sent to comic shops). However, for news-stand editions, it does not work. The NS's only have a two digit number following the main barcode, not a five digit number.

Yeah, saldy it is not going to work for every book but for the ones it does work for, it can make things easier... I guess they didn't want to make things TOO easy for us ;) lol.

One thing I wish the companies would do when it comes to variant covers... either on the cover, or inside the book, give us the print ratio for the variant cover... is it a "1:25" (one in twentyfive), a 1:100, a 1:500 .

Not every modern comic will use this code trick. If it doesn't match, then it won't work.

Look for comics like X-men 10, X-men 21, Giant Sized X-men and X-men 94 are givens), X-men 100, 101, 221, 261 are great comics. Start there....

What about with comics that have virgin prints , where do we find that barcode ? Is there any way for me to find out what a comic title is and what series it’s from without opening it on virgin prints ?

Sadly there are some exceptions like that one where you are going to have a difficult time without opening a book to find out.... Barcodes don't work for all books sadly.

If an issue has two covers that are printed in equal amounts should the cover with a 2 in the fourth position be considered a variant or not? There seem to be differing opinions on this.

yes because one is cover A and the other is cover B. Cover B IS a variant, it is just not a 1:10, 1:25, or any of those rarer variants. Cover B variants are printed the same amount as cover A but it is still a variant.... Thank you for that really good question. Hope my answer helps.

I have two variants that don't seem to follow this order, can you help? The first one I am referring to has the numbers 00117 but it says variant edition on the front cover. The second comic I am referring to reads 00116, but it also says variant edition on the front cover.

Hey Chris (or others who could answer this). Invincible #2, the barcode I have is 00121. Opening the book, it’s written volume 1, issue 2, first printing. Checking on eBay, it looks like other issues are like this too. Shouldn’t the barcode be 00211?

That is how it is most of the time, but there are exceptions to the rule and I think you found one :).

Hey Chris. I have an Ironman #20 from March 2014. The barcode says 00111, but it's issue #20. I have another issue #20(different cover) also from March 2014, but the barcode says 02011 like it's supposed to. Any idea what the deal could be?

Chris I really need some advice right now! I recently moved and left my comics at my other place to avoid any big temperature changes or humidity changes. It’s been about a week. within that time I was able to buy a dehumidifier which I’ve gotten my room to around 40-45% but it’s decently hotter at my new place since I was only able to afford the dehumidifier and not an a/c unit for my room but today my old roommates said I had to move my comics today or risk them getting thrown out. I just got done moving them. Will my comics be okay? We are looking at around an 8 to 10 degrease difference probably I’m just freaking out. I’ve never had to move my comics before they’ve always been in a decently fixed environment.

To be honest, unless I was there, it would be hard to say. The one thing about comics is that no matter what you do to them, eventually they will be gone. I mean, after all they are made of paper... Doing anything that speeds up the process is what we try to avoid. That is why I try to tell people to not spend so much on high priced bags and boards like some worship because all they do is slow down the process not stop it... And considering they degeneration process could take over 100 years or so, what does it matter when you are long gone? ;) lol... So don't worry about your comic if you are trying the best that you can. No matter what you do, one day they will be dust, so enjoy them while you have them :).

Not sure, Maybe they are changing the barcode or that could be one of the exceptions that I mention. Sadly, it is not a 100% exact science, but it will work for most of the modern books.

Question… i have a BRZRKR and bar code says its 03031… to me tha says. # 30, 3rd variant, 1st print…but the comic and price guide says its #3… not #30???? Am I reading it wrong somehow or is it a print mistake? Someone help!! TY

Keep in mind not all comic bar codes will work. This may be one of those times

This was really helpful and informative. I’m already checking my comics. I thought a signature indicates a variant, but even the non-variants have a signature. I have two comics that do confuse me. The first is “Demon Days Mariko”, from Marvel Comics, and the barcode reads 00117. It’s the first issue, not a variant, and the seventh print. The part that confuses me is that, where it says the issue number, it says Variant Edition. So I’m confused on whether it is a variant or not. The second comic, also Marvel, is the King in Black series titled “Return of the Valkyries”. The barcode reads 00120, and the back says it’s a Variant Edition. So, it is the first issue, and is a variant. It’s the 0 at the end that confuses me. If it were a 1, that would say it was the first print. But it’s a zero. I have no idea what that means. I’m hoping you could explain what it means for those two comics since I am just noticing what variant covers are.

Always remember that not every comic follows this rule so that may be the case with your comic.

Not sure on that one but always keep in mind like I say in the video not every modern book is going to work with that barcode, so that might be one of those times.

They tend to not have that many because the comics with tons of variants tend to be store variants, which means they are considered a 1 on the barcode... But, if Marvel decided to put out 10 variants themselves with no store variants, then the number 10 would have to be there in the code. But also remember, this doesn't work with every new comic, so that could be an exception.

I found a barcode error the other night... it was for the comic "Ex-Con #2". The barcode shows the issue number as "020" (ie: #20). There's a copy on ebay now (item 191374396523) and you can see the barcode error for yourself. Kinda interesting.... then I went to check the other four issues (it's a five issue series), and ALL of them have the same error... issue #1 barcode = "010", #3 barcode = "030" etc.

How is it with comics pre-barcodes? Where the comic is similar, but there are minor differences, say in text.

Yes, but not using the barcodes... The inside bottom of the very 1st page will tell you if it is a 2nd print. Back then, they did not do many of those though.

Sometimes aren't there more than ten covers? So what would the bar code look like? Would it be "004121" if it's the fourth issue, 11th variant and 1st print? That right?

So Action comics issue 1,263 with 175 variant covers and 23 print runs because it's the special death of Superman and end of Metropolis and the DC Universes issue and Batman and Robin cross over.......and cross dress......and get married too!............. just bear with me, OK :) ........if you bought the final issue put out variant and print run-wise would be..........."126317623" as the bar code number? Is that right? :)

Hey Chris, in terms of value, which print after the first is worth the most? In other words, if there are 6 prints, which of the 2-6 would be worth the most? I know print runs lower with each printing so I’m curious to see what you think.

It is really hard to say. I don't honestly like 2nd prints and only collected one as a kid (The spiderman gold reprint). Alternative printing values would depend on if they put a major 1st appearance on the cover (EX : Walking dead 100 - Negan 1st cover), or it could have a scarce print run (Ex: Captain Marvel 17 2nd print).... So to be honest, I would rather have a 1st print but some 2nd prints are cool. As far as I know there are not that many rare or valuable prints after the 2nd...

Yes, have fun, collect what makes you happy, Make sure you know what you are doing before buying, never use emotion to buy anything, make deals happen, take the time to search for what you want. ANd I have many many tip videos under my playlist titled TIPS/ADVICE. I would HIGHLY recommend watching as many as you can so you can learn all you can. Hope that helps.

It can be overwhelming at first so don't stress out. Make sure you do plenty of research before you start rushing in and buying everything you see. I made that mistake when I came back in Oct of 2015. Learn all you can and have fun :). Enjoy
