CLZ Comic Collector vs ComicBase!

This is a bit of a sequel to my video "Track & Catalog a Comic Collection". In this one I take a hard look and compare the two leading Windows programs for cataloging a comic collection - Comic Collector (CLZ) and ComicBase.

Really enjoyed this AND really appreciate your hard won considerations. I'm a true anomaly :) i have the collection on excel but I use dropbox mobile to access it when I'm out and about looking for the spare back issue, here and there. I don't track pricing with it ... Which is really the main reason I want software of any sort. That and the thumbnails do help. You are most appreciated. Subbed.

Personally I don't have the economy to pay for these kind of subscriptions, I'd rather put that into buying comics instead. However I do keep track of everything I own and order in a excel document, not as pretty but it's the poor man's solution ^^ Thanks for the informing video, I've always been interested in the differences :)

I used CLZ's Book Collector for Windows and switched to using ComicBase when books were added to the database a couple of years ago. I switched for several reasons 1) I was already using ComicBase for comics and wanted comics, books & magazines all in one database - more efficient that way and 2) for the trust reason you mentioned in the video. Even before the yearly subscription model, I'd constantly get emails saying, "you know, you're several versions behind. Pay this amount (whatever that was) and get caught up." I don't like getting bugged to upgrade a piece of software, especially if it's working fine for me.

I keep telling myself that I need too catalog my collection. Thanks for the recommendations. I’d be pretty mad myself if a “lifetime licence” was revoked too. Subscriptions are fine but not necessary for every single piece of content, program, etc that we use. I think I may try the CLZ app

I got clz for my MAC back in 2011. It was the perpetual license and it still works to this day. I also had the perpetual license for my phone but then that phone died. I just used the license on my MAC for many years but this year I decided to pay the yearly fee for the app on my current phone. The app even pairs with my perpetual license on my MAC. I am pretty happy with the set up. Using a phone is great when searching for comics in the wild and then I have it forever on my MAC as a backup. The only thing I dont luke about it is that it does not work well with barcode scanners.

Larry, off topic but I see your paper girls hardcovers in the video. Not sure if you were on Saturday when I mentioned on Jess’s show that the front cover of my 2nd hardcover has rolls in the foil now. It didn’t when I bought it. Is yours intact? Just curious how rare this defect is. Thanks.

if i get clz for my iphone and tablet is that one subscription yearly lower cost i dont mind just like to keep a list of all my comics is there a limit or unlimited count. How can i see the value of the comics i have or should i go with a separate app or integrated, any other apps you recommend to have a digital list,

YES you can use the app (with ONE subscription) on a phone and an iPad at the same time. I THINK you would need an additional subscription if you needed to cross platforms though -like Android/iOS. But iPhone/iPad -no problem. As for values I am really not super stoked about any of the automatic solutions out there. You can try the built in one as it would be the simplest. See how ya like it. If I understand you correctly, both of these are proprietary applications that rely heavily on user input, but all the profits go to the developer. Is that right? To me that sounds ethically questionable. It seems like an ideal piece of software would rely on an online public database similar to wikipedia, but use it as a source for individuals to customize their personal collections. Do both of these pieces of software allow users to export their data in a standardized format, so it can be taken to other applications as needed? Also, from your description, it sounds like these two applications are both focused on collections of single issues, right? I only read collected editions and graphic novels, so a general book collecting app would be right for me. Or am I misunderstanding the purpose of this software?

Both programs add new issues/books as they come out on a weekly basis....but not always everything...at least not as soon as it comes out. The user submissions help speed this up and fill in those gaps. Both do allow for exporting. But realize with ComicBase your installed program will keep functioning "forever" without a subscription....you just will have to input any new stuff yourself. ComicBase doesn't lock you out of your own data if you stop paying. Both programs index single issues as well as collected editions ....but the singles are probably indexed a little quicker in some cases. Also ComicBase has expanded to include magazines, newspapers and prose books but that is more recent so I'm sure that data isn't anywhere near as complete as comics.

I probably should invest some type of database to keep track of my comic collection. I have an app on my phone that I recently acquired that keeps track of my movies and tv shows. Though it doesn’t contain everything. There use to be a website called Film Aficionado that did have everything but no longer exists. I had used it for more than ten years and then one day poof. With 3000+ titles you sometimes make a mistake and buy something twice. Hopefully this database won’t go away like the dodo bird.

Comic base does it backup or sync to icloud or other cloud services or only on their servers

It back up to their own server. A local copy is also backed up to your hard drive. You could take that backup file and save it to an external drive or some other cloud based solution if you like. But it won't happen through ComicBase itself.

@@LarrysLibrary hmm ok i dont mind that self backup, i tried CLZ Comics and tried 4 different comics and all could not read the barcode or something Error cant search CLZ Core please make sure your logged in and i am but seems glitchy so far and not so reliable. I'll give comicbase a try. Had used CLZ for dvd backup collection prior and worked well, but sometimes i have to redo inventory as it wouldn't keep the records, this was like 10 years ago.

I might not be able to finish this tonight, but I’ll try…this is really interesting. I seem to remember you mentioning this before…it’s a terrible thing. Yearly subs is ruining everything- I won’t do it, until there will come a time when I’ll have no choice. Ok. I’ll finish tomorrow. I use CLZ - paid a one-time fee. I need to check out Comic Base but I don’t like annual unless absolutely necessary.

you say download with clz, so i can i scan my comic book into clz why is it downloading can i read them on my tablet or iphone?

No....it can download cover images and the data itself - creator credits, storylines, etc
