A TINY 3ft 3” school teacher is proving that size certainly does not matter - even when some of her three-year-old students tower above her. Describing herself as the ‘size of a four-year-old’, Megan Grannan, 26, was born with Metatropic Dysplasia; an extremely rare form of dwarfism. Megan, who lives in New Jersey, is just one out of 100 people living with the condition worldwide and it was said that she would not see out the first year of her life. But Megan has been proving doubters wrong her entire life - including those who laughed when she said she wanted to become a school teacher and inspire children.

Kids that age are more willing to learn and understand people's differences or uniqueness. And once you pass that stage they don't make it a thing or let it phase them. I always said at my work ,kids that age are more reasonable then the older ones. If they're curious, they'll just ask you and get over it which I love instead of acting indifferent by staring

This is wonderful to see. I have dwarfism as well (I'm 3'9) and have a Masters degree in Education. Unfortunately, the districts here in NY were not as open-minded as hers. After 7 years of no job offers, I had to change strategies. I ended up going for a civil service job. It's not as prestigious and doesn't require a Masters, but it's nice to at least know my boss appreciates my work and is thrilled to have me.

I feel like having a teacher with a disability when you're as young as her kids is sooooo beneficial. When I started school my first teacher was disabled. She was born without a hand and I personally feel as though that experience early on in life is what made me so receptive of people with disabilities.. aside from the fact that one of my best friends growing up had a developmental disability I feel like that played a major role in my compassion and ability to understand those who we perceive to be different.

Molly McConnell I’m sure she’s a great teacher and I respect her but looking at from another perspective is most of the time having kids who are bigger than you make it hard to establish respect it even happens among high school seniors, as much as I wish it wasn’t true it’s just human nature to belittle things smaller than you. As well they mentioned she needed assistance dressing bathing etc when handling small children it makes parents as well myself in high school iffy about her looking over small children. Most of her job focuses on her education considering she struggles with other basic abilities :/ I hope she gets to continue teaching but the job can be brutal especially parents and accidents etc

If half the kids in your class would freak out, that's a big problem. Kids should never fear disabled people and it is crucial, for both us disabled folks and those kids, that they understand that we're actually just people in bodies that work a little differently. Maybe look at contacting disability orgs in your area about arranging to have a disabled person come and speak to your class? Kids need to know that we're not monsters and that becoming disabled isn't the end of the world.

Chronically Fabulous yes. We need to instill in them early that not everybody is the same. Some people have physical or mental limitations, but they are still human beings worthy of love, friendship, and respect. They still have feelings like everyone else. I have been teaching my daughter that from as early as I could. We were at the lake feeding ducks. A kiddo came up in a wheelchair and he didn’t have anything to feed them. She voluntarily went over and talked to him and asked if he wanted some food to give to the ducks. I was so proud of her. Every teacher she has had always tells me how kind she is. How she helps her classmates. It makes me happy to know that.

I have to differ, as Megan Grannan has limited arm & leg movement, requiring accommodations. Her kind personality is in part due to being judged, overlooked & mistreated by others. How she responded to these challenges is what made her an exceptional teacher & person. As what doesn't break you makes you stronger & likely kinder to others...

I'm not sure what "teachery" looks like these days, but when I was a kid, it was a print dress with a boat neck or Peter Pan collar that was at least 5 seasons out of date. The "out of date" part seemed to still hold true when I was going through C&I courses in the 1990s! It must take a lot of thought to find a good outfit that size that is age-appropriate and professional. I'd probably want to find a good seamstress, too.

Megan Grannan That makes sense, Megan. It must be frustrating as an adult to have to fight for people to perceive you as an adult. I’m autistic, so I know what least how it feels to be spoken to like a child as an adult. Has there ever been a moment where a child was being “naughty” in the classroom? If so, what happened? 😮 I’ve always been a bit intimidated by naughty kids and wondered how the heck teachers cope.
