A SISTERHOOD of women with gigantic, intricately decorated nails - as long as 19 INCHES - call themselves the Long Nail Goddesses. At Maria Ortiz’s nail salon in Newark, New Jersey, the group of women meet regularly to share stories about the pleasures, trials and tribulations of the long nail lifestyle. The group was founded when Maria began specialising as a nail technician for women who preferred to have elaborately designed nine-inch nails, than trim French-manicures. As her client list (and her eight inch nails) grew, so did the Long Nail Goddesses group. Now, the Goddesses meet monthly and Maria charges $100 for a manicure, which can take her up to seven hours to do.Maria, who is a transgender woman, struggled to find her place in the world, but now she has found a sisterhood that truly love and accept her. and, as her client list grew, so did the sisterhood. Seriously! I’m a nail hobbyist and I just wanna do they nails!! I love their energy. The fact that they are older with such fun nails just makes me so happy! I wanna be that fun as I get older!

Actually, I disagree. I scrub under my long nails every day. If they're short, especially very short, I'm constantly scrubbing them. Dirt gets under them so much more easily.

Actually I got more things stuck under my nails when they were short compared to when they're long. Things that get stuck get stuck in the space between the nail and the tip of your finger, so when you grow your nails out, it doesn't make a difference.

when you have short nails you tend to grab things in a forward motion starting with the tip of your nails. that gives you a greater chance of getting dirt under the nail. When you get longer nails, you can't grab like that cuz it puts stress and you can break a nail. So you pick up and grab things from the side palm of your hand. You avoid getting dirt, food and things on the tips of your fingers--leading to less chance of having dirt in your nail. Also when you have longer nails and spend alot of money on your nails. You very self aware of your pretty nails. You cleaned them, you take care of them. etc. Someone with short nails usually are the type that don't care about their nails apperance or have nail care as an after thought. Also it's not hard to clean under a long nail. Come on now.

I’m not a big fan of nails that are that long- HOWEVER the NAIL ART that these women have is absolutely GORGEOUS. Having so much space on each nail really opens up a whole new world of possibilities for the kind of designs you can do on them. I myself have long nails, but mine are long by a much more “normal” standard lol. I can imagine how long it would take to paint nails like those- mine are short compared to theirs and I still take a couple hours to do my nail art.

Rainbowzie came here just to say the exact same thing. Loved these ladies! And while I wasnt exactly a fan of the nail-part per se, I was totally impressed with their dexterity (I'm so clumsy, have to keep my nails short like a baby or I'll accidentally scratch my face, or break anything that grows past my fingertips.) And the designs were gorgeous!

A support group for those with the same "obsession!" Can we say, clients for life and REFERRALS to the max! No need for Maria to advertise, shes got word of mouth with that support group!! GIRL WHERE DID YOU GET YOUR NAILS DONE?! Now consider this... If Maria has staff, Maria could easily be pulling in $500 -- $800 per day, with full new sets and touch-up clients. Even at just $500 per day if the shop is open 6 days a week... Maria could be making $100k a year. Maria sounds like she has a good business head, so I hope she is setting some money aside.

Although I personally dislike the look, (I find them unsanitary) I can really appreciate and respect their friendship and dedication. They seem like nice people and the art itself on the nail is quite beautiful .

Agreed! I think the nails themselves look kinda gross, but their friendships are so sweet and all the ladies seem to have really nice personalities, and it's great that one lady found something better for her than drugs, plus the designs are gorgeous!

I agree 100%.. I could never wear them that way myself, but the art is beautiful, the friendships and bond that these women have is beautiful, and my personal philosophy is that as long as you're not hurting yourself or anyone else, you go ahead and do you!

Yeah they look kinda gross without polish, but they touch far less with their nails and take far better care of em than you do. Bacteria doesn't build up the same way.

What I found is that you have to get used to them I mean you have to use your hands in a different way so you don’t put pressure on your nails and don’t break them when you are opening a cupboard or something like that

Im not a big fan of long nails myself but they do inspire me to be my truest self and when the woman talked about how instead of drugs she spends money on her nails and I think thats just beautiful. It really comes down to what makes you happy and feel fulfilled. Very inspiring

as a nail tech, the literal answer to "how does this happen?" is that this is a mix of genetics and women being relatively gentle on their nails. Watching this, its kinda like seeing a shiny pokemon. Its so rare. This is not the norm but is super interesting to see a large group of women embrace a natural nails to this extent. It takes women YEARS to get even halway to this point, I personally cant even imagine the determination and patience it might take. Even if its not your taste, the immense amount of effort taken for this should be appreciated
