Out of the Deep by Walter De La Mare is a haunted house story, or rather the story of a haunted person living in a house with hateful memories.
De La Mare was primarily a poet and he uses all his skill to evoke the brooding supernatural atmosphere of the old house.

I relish this story selection & your flawless narration with unbridled zeal! De La Mare was a master at setting atmosphere & mood with his rich, vivid, and trancendant imagery. I'm a huge, huge fan- Thank you, Tony

I hate to say it but your summary at the end of the story was actually more entertaining than the story, but that's just because you made me chuckle here and there. Great insight since you're a psychiatric nurse about the deeper meaning of this story, that there are some people who are so traumatically abused as a child that they really struggle to get over it and that this is part of the essence of the story. Well done! I always get so much from your analyses of these stories.

I often listen to you read to go to sleep, as your voice is soothing. But it's so funny what my sleeping mind does with the story, weaving it into a dream so I'm getting a story created from the one that's being read as I sleep. I just woke to your discussion of the story and learned that my mind had really changed this one. So, your podcast is doubly enjoyable 😀 two stories at once!

Coincidental perhaps yet ( now retired) i have been a nurse and psychotherapist. Seeing your reply prompted me to wonder if such people are particularly fond of De La Mare. I wonder if current therapists could also reply about their own reasons for being fond of his wonderfully insightful writing style. However that may be i appreciate your response and Tony has indeed narrated this well. ⭐️⭐️

@@tomsavage7279WalteroftheSea thank you so much. it’s really so enjoyable to talk to some one who gets it, too. there are a few authors who write about human thought and interactions in a psychological sense - like Tolstoy and Dostoyevski, being the only ones i can think of right now. they are great observers and just realize the thought and feelings about behavior. so many people do not even think of reasons why people behave in certain ways - not “deep” thinkers! have a great day :) 🌷🌱

I interpret each of the spirits as a reflection of Jimmie himself, pig-creature included. I gather being open to multiple interpretations is a deliberate feature of de la Mare’s work, and in that regard I notice there’s as much concrete language in the final passage to suggest that Jimmie is dead as there is to suggest that he’s alive.

'Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord' is the beginning of a psalm from the Bible, usually referred to by its Latin title, the De Profundis, and would have been familiar to its readers/listeners at the time the WDlLM wrote it. It's a prayer from the perspective of a deeply depressed and desperate person and would be interesting to you as a mental health professional, I think.

Of course. De Profundis Clamavi I think. I should have twigged that.

Thanks for this comment. I never realized the significance, and always assumed Profundis meant profound. I never linked it to the Psalm. My Latin is weak :) Thank you! I love learning new things that make me smack my head and say, "Of course!", "Why didn't I see that?"

Thank you for choosing this story to narrate. The way Walter de la Mare writes, it seems much like how my mind works (horrors!). Well, in this story at least. I always feel the slightest step behind his words, but very much eager and able to catch up, and find the entire experience very satisfying. Quite a writer indeed. Although I don’t know what my feelings about his work say about me- that’s probably left unanalyzed! Your narration is always spot on- the intonation, the pauses, the pace. Thank you do much for sharing your gift!

The poets and their love of WORDS! Thanks Tony for another somewhat ? unknown ? ghost story- how you guys with the best channels ferret out and compete/compliment with each other is "terrific" too- some weeks there is almost a "karmic" connection, Happy "accident" of literary fate- as usual I can't explain what I feel - frustrating! As always most enjoyable. Thank you for all your hard work, your channel is a treasure chest for "those" days or for exposing kids of an age to the magical joy of the paranormal- the much more than, a "mere ghost story" - Namaste

Agree-been a favourite for years and have one in an anthology which describes the author’s great insight into the psyche. I know it’s something like ‘The Pot of Tea’ and, when i re listen then hopefully i’ll let you know it’s exact title. Can’t locate the volume it’s in right now but De La Mare is in my top five writers list and ought to be better known today. Certainly a big success towards the close of his life. Tastes may come and go but sheer class will out as they used to say! ⭐️

My thanks, Tony, for the story and for your brilliant narration. What a lovely surprise to find this in my feed. Your handling of it was masterful -- I know this one must have been a trial by fire to narrate, and you pull it off without a hitch. All those endless convoluted sentences, filled with obscure five-syllable words, and you tell the tale with great ease and style. I remember when I originally mentioned it to you, I thought "If anyone could pull this off, it'd be Tony." I first read this as a child, and identified with certain aspects of Jimmy's childhood. Later, I liked that he managed to keep a sense of humor, at least intermittently, when he was finally installed in his uncle's house. Yes, I guess it was depressing, for which my apologies. But this is a writer who's been a favorite for a long time, and a story that I'm really pleased to revisit. I look forward to listening again, at bedtime, in the future. Don't be surprised if it doesn't immediately get a lot of views. I suggested A: B: O (same author) to Ian at Horrorbabble a few years back. It didn't get a lot of listens at first, now it's got 28K.

Hi Tony, still asleep in a gorgeous house, Regency, in bucolic England! I am up now at 1am. Do you make house calls? My psych nurse is asleep as I should be- not a pain problem tonight, I did get a killer cortisone shot in my bony shoulder Tuesday- I thought I'd faint and I am not a fainter. This has to stop, I am not bipolar nor schizophrenic just the regular garden variety neurotic with classic backstop of abuse, unattractive, talentless and aging...Nothing special- no Virginia Woolf which is good and bad- she's a much admired writer. S snob no doubt who didn't suffer fools but, still a remarkable woman who WOULD understand my dilemma- if only I was working on a novel or taking "dictation" like James Merrill. Do you believe in that "phenomenon" - hope that is the singular of the word, drove my Women in Medieval Society prof NUTS. Let's call her Bernadette- she was a fish out of water- neurotic, unmarried, by choice, but still at 35, when you look and dress, like a Vogue model but possess a Mensa I. Q. detest MOST boys, men- two or three would become "encrushed" take her course as a " bird course" engineering students laughed at EVERY OTHER DISCOPLINE- an easy pass and maybe a date? That's how bad some of them were- rumors, my big mouth former friend told me all about her hot, illicit romance! Always wondered how she fared- belonged in a more cosmopolitan city- not The University of Brighton which I just found out from watching an oldie but goodie, murder thriller, bit gory, with a "snuff film making" lunatic running the town from its bowels, awful "bodice-ripper" title Resort to Murder- GROAN but the yummy replete with- how does replete differ from complete - this is about language- it's coming, replete with Oxford glasses, horn rim John Lennon over- priced glasses, cream linen jacket, dark green or black wool dress pants and Oxford scarf, no loafers- July in Brigjton? But draped on Delicious, never seen anymore, BEN CHAPLIN- no relation to Charlie, it's a wonder as he was like an early rock star, a handsome Jagger- now that you've been sued for libel- it's worth watching- you were born when it was made- 1996- Brighton looks a right gas and his father, owned a hall full of automatons- one of my " if I was a millionaire after I set up my real charity- no tax dodge and become a patron of the National Ballet and an art venue for kids esp poor kids, all the arts- dress making too- all those William Morris cottage industries are getting lost, aren't they and I do regard people such as the late, Alexander McQueen, an artist- he says, "hey" he's sitting in a lavish overly decorated black and silver and crystal frsme- another, "made my spouse's head shake- like I said, garden variety ECCENTRIC" - he meant more to me than most of my abusive family....The language question: NOT INTENDED AS A SLUR, SLIGHT, INSULT, DEGRADATION- WATCHING AUSTRALIAN TRUE CRIME, FORENSICS, VERY KEEN ON FORENSICS, HOW DID ENGLISH, IRISH, WELSH? LANGUAGES TRANSPLANTED TO "DEVIL'S ISLAND" NED KELLY AND THE OTHER SO-CALLED CRIMINALS- WITH MAORI AND THR OTHER INDIGENOUS RIGHTFUL OWNERS OF THAT VAST LAND, HOW DID THEIR ENGLISH- YOU NEED TO TWIST YOUR FACE OVER TWO INCHES TO MIMIC THE DIALECT, remember That Infamous Monty Python skit, The Institution or University of Philosophy? The dept where everybody is named, BRUCE! except, Michael?! What makes their speech almost need subtitles ? You wrote me a note in which you mentioned, Tokoharian sp - what is it? Australian fascinates me and you are a linguist too Prof Higgins- when you were a kid what did you want to be? You are SO SMART, SO INTERESTED AND ACCOMPLISHED AT SO MUCH- I also wanted your opinion on the spirit paintings of Hillary Auf Klimt- gotta check her name out- saw her remarkable work in a fun, fav, commercial, "ghost story" ectoplasm used! Best sort of ghosts, not somebody in a ludicrous body suit - Crimson Peak- Tom Hiddleston sp? Sorry Tom- terrific actor and rather easy on the eyes but as far as the film goes, sorry, thumbs down- ALL THE COSTUMES WERE RIDICULOUS- I am a bit of a fashion historian, still learning- several excellent channels on here and The Victoria and Albert Museum has incredible vignettes- help I need an awesome thesaurus- HILMA AUF KLIMT WAS ACTUALLY, ARGUABLY, THE FIRST ABSTRACT PAINTER- MAYBE? Today's gossip was sponsored by an annoying guy with hip hip chains which he should strangle himself with...Not your fault...Namaste
