I hate to say it but your summary at the end of the story was actually more entertaining than the story, but that's just because you made me chuckle here and there. Great insight since you're a psychiatric nurse about the deeper meaning of this story, that there are some people who are so traumatically abused as a child that they really struggle to get over it and that this is part of the essence of the story. Well done! I always get so much from your analyses of these stories.

I interpret each of the spirits as a reflection of Jimmie himself, pig-creature included. I gather being open to multiple interpretations is a deliberate feature of de la Mare’s work, and in that regard I notice there’s as much concrete language in the final passage to suggest that Jimmie is dead as there is to suggest that he’s alive.

'Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord' is the beginning of a psalm from the Bible, usually referred to by its Latin title, the De Profundis, and would have been familiar to its readers/listeners at the time the WDlLM wrote it. It's a prayer from the perspective of a deeply depressed and desperate person and would be interesting to you as a mental health professional, I think.

Thank you for choosing this story to narrate. The way Walter de la Mare writes, it seems much like how my mind works (horrors!). Well, in this story at least. I always feel the slightest step behind his words, but very much eager and able to catch up, and find the entire experience very satisfying. Quite a writer indeed. Although I don’t know what my feelings about his work say about me- that’s probably left unanalyzed! Your narration is always spot on- the intonation, the pauses, the pace. Thank you do much for sharing your gift!

Yours is the best horror channel on KZfaq in my opinion most captivating stories. Not all from 1930’s like horror babble. The odd old story is nice not everyone from that period though and nothing else is horrible

My psych nurse is asleep as I should be- not a pain problem tonight, I did get a killer cortisone shot in my bony shoulder Tuesday- I thought I'd faint and I am not a fainter. This has to stop, I am not bipolar nor schizophrenic just the regular garden variety neurotic with classic backstop of abuse, unattractive, talentless and aging...Nothing special- no Virginia Woolf which is good and bad- she's a much admired writer. S snob no doubt who didn't suffer fools but, still a remarkable woman who WOULD understand my dilemma- if only I was working on a novel or taking "dictation" like James Merrill. Do you believe in that "phenomenon" - hope that is the singular of the word, drove my Women in Medieval Society prof NUTS. Let's call her Bernadette- she was a fish out of water- neurotic, unmarried, by choice, but still at 35, when you look and dress, like a Vogue model but possess a Mensa I. Q. detest MOST boys, men- two or three would become "encrushed" take her course as a " bird course" engineering students laughed at EVERY OTHER DISCOPLINE- an easy pass and maybe a date? That was shockingly bad writing and a chore to get through. Terrible, terrible storytelling and writing. No fault on the narrator.

The author of this story is a terrible storyteller. Endless superfluous details and no story advancement twenty minutes into it.
