If you preheat the kick start crank and stud before welding you might have success. Clean everything real well. The YL1 is rated at 9.5hp and 6 lb-ft of torque, with an advertised 153 miles per gallon at 19mph with a top speed of approximately 70mph.

I absolutely adore vintage Yamahas, any and all of them. You do a great job at getting these old gems to run. Nothing cooler in my eyes than seeing these old gals running and hopefully on the roads again. You should keep doing Yamahas and old Hondas. It's just so cool. Keep it up!!

Back about 1970 my older brother bought a used 90cc Yamaha and it was very similar to your bike if not exactly. It was orange with chrome on the sides of the gas tank with the rubber pads. He left it for me to ride while he was away at the Naval Academy. We were able to get it to a top speed of about 55 mph if I remember correctly. I really enjoy your videos. The sound of your bike brought back some good memories.

My older brother and I bought the same bike back in Ireland in 1979 or 80 for around Forty Quid. (Ours was Blue though) We put close to 6,000 miles on it before we both emigrated, no front brakes, a Vise Grip a for gear pedal and no kickstart but it started every time on a handy push. Different times back then Mr. Dudek, a 12 and 14 year old, no tax, no license and obviously no insurance. Wickedd Craic and Great memories.

I used to round up coke bottles on one just like it. I had universal trials tires on it and it was pretty darn nimble. Traded it and a shotgun for a clapped out Kawasaki trail boss dual range. My kicker was garbage too. I finally just cut a valley in the shifter shaft and did the old wedge routine...it actually worked.

I found out a long time ago that hydrogen peroxide is great for attacking rust. If you get a couple of bottles, pour it into the gas tank, and let it sit for an hour or two. It doesn't damage anything but the rust. It gets most of the surface rust and a little bit of the rust sitting below the surface. Works great with other parts with a brass bristle brush on hand, saves me from buying parts

Little life hack for ya. Living where I do it usually takes weeks for eBay orders getting to me. I found with petcock rubber seals if I take a small Advil, Tylenol or pill bottle toss your rubber seal into that. Add brake fluid into the pill bottle and toss the bottle into the ultrasonic cleaner full of warm water with just with the heat function on. It will soften up the seal enough until the rebuild kit comes in.

Awesome Joe! I have a suggestion (as usual lol) since the kick starter has already been welded a few times, it won't really matter if a hole's drilled through the shaft and kick lever. Remove the muffler so you can have room to do this. Drill a small diameter hole (less than half the diameter of the shaft) through the kit lever and shaft. Instal a pin, not a bolt, through them. The pin must be an interference fit or it will fail. Use whatever means you like to force the pin into the hole. Not a roll pin, a solid steel pin. Weld where you've welded before, using a gas torch or wig welder. It should not break again. I know you have a background in engineering and fully understand my suggestion and why. Loved watching you administer CPR to another old engine. These are my favorite videos.
@bigmac..
@bigmac.. Жыл бұрын
Think the kick start is cast steel and won't weld correctly
@sandmanbub
@sandmanbub Жыл бұрын
@@bigmac.. yes, you're correct. It's case hardened cast steel. Did you know that cast iron can be welded if preheated properly? People used to believe it could not be. I've big welded these shafts before with success. Almost anything that doesn't break the laws of physics can be accomplished with the correct procedure.
@nattydreadlocks1973
@nattydreadlocks1973 6 ай бұрын
The pin wound have to be about 1/8" diameter. Otherwise, you would compromise the structural integrity of the shaft. At 1/8" diameter, the pin wouldn't be strong enough. The only real solution is to tear the engine down and replace the shaft and kick lever.
@sandmanbub

When you have a fiel tank with rust like that grab a hanful of nuts and bolts and throw them in the tank then tape the tank to one of your quad tires and jack it up. Run the quad in its top gear and just let it sit for about 15 minutes. Then take the bolts and nuts out and blow it out with your compressor. Works great.
