I picked up this jawa motorcycle that was painted over with black paint but wanted to see if I could get it back off trying a bunch of different methods. lets see how it all works out.

.........I'm 63 years old and very much enjoy watching your videos, gawd, how I wish I had half of the garage that you have. Great workplace and tools to fix everything. Even a 'lift' to help you get under your projects. Unfortunately, I live in a condo and don't have the luxury of having a place so well decked out to work in. when doing my reno projects. I also wish I had the knowledge that you have in working on cars, I can diagnose problems but don't have the understanding to be able to pull a motor apart and put it back together. I should've taken those 'shop' courses in high school. :)

Something you could try on the rougher parts (or the whole bike) is to repaint and once dry you could sand it back (or sand through) a bit to match the less rough areas and make it all flow together. It works really well for aging hardware too. I'd love to see it closer to original paint but with the wear it would have had in its life time. They were tough bikes. And the aging would only add to its character.

*Mustie1* I was still hoping you would try Gojo orange hand soap with aluminum foil as the scrubber on that chrome (and test on other parts). It works wonders, a friend who restored 100's of bicycles showed me that trick. He showed me a rusty bike I thought was beyond redemption, I left for a half hour, when I got back the bike looked new (the rims were chrome steel, and absolutely shining, no more rust pits!). Thank you for all your excellent videos.

I believe that woven stuff is intended as RF shielding for cables and the like, but it can certainly also be used as ground strap. Or to cover ratty chrome exhaust pipes. :-) I was thinking of using the wet&dry to key the black paint and then go at it with the acetone, but then I saw what you did with the steel wool and the acetone, and I suspect it was about the same result or better. I came across some chrome paint a few years ago that was utterly amazing. It went on as almost a slurry that didn't look like much of anything more than scrambled eggs, but after a few moments it got its act together and turned into this absolutely mirror finish chrome-like surface. Didn't look at all like the usual aluminum "chrome" spray paint. Unfortunately I can't for the life of me remember who made it or what it was called, so that isn't much of a help.

The front tire ‘Barum’ is a CZ brand tire, actually good tires, I had some 28 year old tires on my truck that were Barum CHemlon - hardly no cracking or dry rot even when flexed after airing down. Barum is now part of Continental.

The seat and front/rear fenders are very clean so in my opinion i would paint the tank/side panels and front/rear shocks. I would wrap the front section of exhaust and matt black the rear sections with high temp paint, this would not cost much at all and would make it look so much better.

Agree w/ James Price below. Wrap the downpipes, sandblast and black hi-temp paint for the mufflers. Won't cost much money & will make a big improvement in the looks of the bike. And as long as you have the sandblaster out, you could blast the rims smooth and then spray them with satin silver paint.

If your going to leave the paint as it is I'd paint the wheels and exhaust is a high heat silver paint. Not the fake chrome but like a header style silver. I say silver so it will match the case color somewhat. Awsome motorcycle. I'm a big fan of two strokes anyway.
@shonepolk91123 жыл бұрын
That chop in the front tire is normally called feathering. It’s caused by worn shocks letting tire bounce. I’m sure in this case the fork oil is low or something else hindering the fork from operating like it should. So as it rolls down the roll it hops fast causing uneven wear.
@jamesboswell27126 жыл бұрын
Depending on how old the tires are in depending on where it was located through the years the belts and certain types of tires will actually break but the rubber won't give away so therefore you get lumps of divots in valleys inside your tread I remember the 50s it through 70's model glasspack tires the belts and then would break but the tire would not give away

I'm pretty sure that Barum are a Czech company so there's a good chance that front tyre is either original to the bike or is a replacement supplied by a Jawa dealer. With the number of US tyre manufacturers there were in the '70s and '80s I can't imagine there would have been much market space for Czech tyres in the US unless they were unusual sizes or specs. Barum tyres are actually pretty good on cars and vans though I have no idea how they are on bikes...

gosportjamie Depends, remember the top end on these is about 80 mph unless you mod the engine. My twinsport can haul myself and wife ( both large) and two kids in the sidecar but not much faster than 50 mph on flat ground at 7000 feet altitude. Did they give good mileage on the transit?
@gosportjamie6 жыл бұрын
+andrew allen Most of the vehicles they were used on were extensively used in town so it was pretty rare for them to get changed out because the tread was worn out, they usually went because they sidewalls were knackered from kerb strikes and such...
