We found this old German (Pre-)WW2 bicycle in the basement of an old Bavarian country house and now we're bringing it back to the road again.
This video idea came to us in the middle of the restoration process - that's why part 0, 1 and 2 are very short and just for demonstration purposes.

I know I'm very late here and no-one will read this but I am amazed at how repairable this bicycle is. Every single piece can be replaced no matter how tiny it is. The build quality is robust. No flimsy part to be seen anywhere. Companies nowadays are always after cutting corners. Regarding the restoration process most people are at the extreme ends of two opposite sides. Some hate the fact that the patina is removed or a new coat of paint is done and vice versa. I'm kinda in the middle. If the rust has entered under the old paint you sand it and paint it to prevent further rusting. If it's a few chipping here and there or the paint has rubbed off due to regular use, keep it as is. I follow this philosophy while repairing things in my house. Thank you.

I read :) The robustness is the reason why i owned 30 years ago a bike from second world war. I don't know the brand anymore. But it was the only bike that was able to keep up my paper boy job. 50kg load on the bicycle rack was no problem for that bike. It reduced my round trips to base station enormously.

Magnificent restoration, you've kept the bike's patina, which is part of its charm. Finally someone who doesn't repaint everything, who doesn't change everything. I restore vintage bikes myself, but more from the 80s. I have the same principles as you, in the sense that, as I said, you restore, not renovate. I found this restoration really nice, I hope you'll do more of them 👍

I just did a 1947 cwc roadmaster. Was my grandfathers. Paint was too far gone to save as it was in the barn loft for almost 40 years. Maybe longer. I kept the original paint options that were available. It was black and white with red pinstripes.. I put it all back but switched too gold pin stripes . It looks soo classy. And was an option.. it will be my sunny day rider with the kids.

I am a bicycle mechanic...I know this may mean nothing to most everyone but....the clamping of a frame by it's top-tube........ it's a thing which makes some mechanics absolutely irate. The work he's doing is lovely, meticulous, and he seems organized indeed. The application of torque, either cleaning motion and or headset/bb/pedal install when a frame is clamped at the top-tube could "kink" the frame. I've seen it happen. I've done it myself when I was a young mechanic. I watched an apprentice crack a frame this way and then get fired as he was "sure that it wasn't the clamp....the frame was like that." I just.....get a dummy post or something.....it may be insane of me to complain or mention this but I love bikes and the entirety of our industry.....save the frames and use dummy seat posts. Sorry to vent. Lovely video though Dear Comrade.

It may be insane but I think all us bike mechanics are a bit looney. I mean....have you ever tried to turn off Slayer or something like that and one of your mechanics loses their minds as a result? What an authentic restoration. The pedals - mind-blowing simple engineering built with permanence in mind. MASSIVE, thoroughly thought out, simple, durablity in a bicycle. Leave it to the Germans - champions of conveying utility, simplicity, affordability, durability and elegance through sound engineering in everything they do. The only thing - the brakes: not at all convincing, but that allows for uninterrupted forward progress, I suppose.

@@danielpreilly77 I don't know about this particular macine, but industrial quality machines are really expensive new where i live. In Sweden it would probably go for at least 3-600USD i think in this condition. It is probably not worth buying and restoring just for selling, but it is definitely worth it for the feeling when it stand there before You in the workshop and You are gripping around the handle! Compared to the 200$ Chinesium macines even an 80 Year old drillpress of this type is an absolute dream to use! If ask me. My recent project is and Eagle (Örn) late from 1944 i got on a local machine action recently, i would newer trade it for any ever so good brand new Chinesium macine i can tell. Ha ha

Great vehicle and restoration. What I particularly notice is that the mudguard around the front wheel is nice and long, not like most modern bicycles that throw dirt and water at themselves and the rider's shoes. I don't understand this step backwards. Dirt everywhere because a short mudguard is considered sportier and cooler? People used to be smarter. For my needs, a mudguard has to be even longer, the tangent of the tire, along which dirt flies away, has to run below the bottom bracket and the pedals. So I attached a self-made protective shield made of neoprene and a steel wire bracket to my bike. So everything stays clean below for much longer. Although my bike is 54 years younger than the Wanderer here, it is also 31 years old and on the road every day in summer and winter, I take good care of it.
