Barrage (1-4 players) is one of the most brutal, interactive and strategic board games of the last few years. Set in a dystopic 1930's where no fossil fuels remain and hydroelectricity is our only hope for energy, each player will take on the role of an international hydroelectricity company. You'll aim to make yours the most successful by controlling and harnessing the flow of meltwater in the Alps.
A tense worker placement, building placement, resource management based game, this is not one to ignore. If you want a strategic and interactive experience with your friends, watch and find out why we love this game. We also discuss the Leeghwater Project expansion and what that brings to the table.

Amazing! It's always so cool to hear that people got games due to our reviews. Unless they didn't like them.... Barrage is a top 5 game for us though, so you certainly can't go wrong here, particularly if you like it interactive and brutal!

I am not going to get the expansion now, I mostly play with 3 and 4 players and your argument about tight money and resources with that player count was spot on. Maybe some time in future, but I have enough replayability with the base game now.

I love games that are really brutal and require you to be on point. It's one of the reasons I love On Mars so much.
@BoardOfItReviews
@BoardOfItReviews 3 жыл бұрын
We actually got On Mars out last weekend after not playing it for about 6 months - so good to play it again but yeah that shuttle in the later rounds can really screw you over if you’re not careful! We got Food Chain Magnate recently and have had a few games - that definitely falls into the brutal category too, although I guess in a different way as that can be more about other players screwing you over and taking down your whole strategy. What other games do you think fall into this category?!
@Swedgin23
@Swedgin23 3 жыл бұрын
@@BoardOfItReviews Yeah I feel like with On Mars you need to be so on point because one mistake can derail you. That level of intensity makes me really interested in Barrage. My other fav is Forbidden Stars because it forces player conflict. I guess I'm looking to you two to uncover some of these intense brain burner games and bring them to the forefront! :p
@BoardOfItReviews

We haven’t played Forbidden Stars, thanks for the suggestion! Our group certainly isn’t scared of a bit of conflict! We’ve got another Lacerda game on the table right now - Kanban EV - we’re finding it a little easier than On Mars but it’s still in that category! Will probably review this one soon 😬

Ooooo we did consider it. Maybe one day, but I think it would be a bit of a tough one. The board is such a table hog I'm not sure how much an overhead view would cover, and it's also quite a long thinky game so lots of hmms and umms to edit out. I think we'll progressively try to film longer videos and Barrage would be terrific fun to do so never say never!! Also thanks for the lovely comment.

Really appreciate the honest "cons" of a game you love so much. Sometimes tough to do that objectively but really helps me understand what I'm getting into. Do you ever concede a game of Barrage because of its length and its unforgiveness, in the case of when you've made an obvious mistake that will likely cost you the game? Seems like that could be temping but, at the same time, always fun to see if you can eek a comeback.
@BoardOfItReviews

We're just really glad we could help, and of course that someone appreciates we try to be honest about everything. So far we haven't, no. I really wanted to in the scenario I outlined in the review, but it wouldn't have been fair to Tallie. In the end, I only ended up 10 or 15 points away, so I'm glad I didn't. We aren't really conceding people I guess, we feel like it would ruin the fun for the other player/players. In a recent game of 5p Scythe, a friend made a silly move, and it cost him any chance of doing well. Then he just kinda sat out and didn't play anymore. It wasn't great, because both Tallie and I should have been getting resources from his actions so by doing that he was also ruining the game for us in a way.

@@BoardOfItReviews Good to hear your thoughts. My wife and I aren't the concession type either because I agree that it sort of ruins the fun / win for the other.

Hi guys! ineteresting review. I've mostly seen kinda negative reviews on Barrage, and was abstaining from buying it. So when I saw Golem coming out from the same company, Cranio Creations, The theme of Golems really attracted me. Would love to see a review of Golem, whenever you get the chance of getting it to the table. well, I think I'll go and get Barrage! You guys are great!

I think there was a lot of negativity when it game out as the fulfilment from the KS was a bit of a mess, and lots of people had broken components or were missing pieces and it took ages to rectify. Then, it's quite an intense brutal game, which isn't gonna be for everyone. We love it however!

Update on Barrage. I played it for the first time with 4 players. All new to the game. And boy! What a game took us 4hours! And I won having only one Conduit until the last round when I constructed the second😊 . Was using other player’s conduit. Totally enjoyed it

(Ignore my username, I made this YT account when I was 12) One complaint that is thrown around constantly about these intense thinky board games like Barrage is that they reduce talk amongst players since you are so engaged in planning your strategy. I have never found this to be the case, with any of those types of games I have played. The complaint about people not wanting the cutthroat nature of these types of games is understandable, and not liking them is too I am not saying there is no reason not to like them simply stating what I have found. When we play games that do fit that paradigm of little interaction and are not as competitive, I find have fewer funny moments and memorable moments you have in board games, I find you end up talking more. Sure you will be planning, however, I find it very rarely consumes the experience. For example, I was playing Food Chain Magnate with my group with the expansion. I had a strategy to place my starting restaurant by the apartment building which was island off in the corner with most of the lemonade spots on the board. I planned to luxuries manager sell lemonade and just corner the market for this apartment. My one friend saw my starting placement, before I could even make my first sale they place a big enough billboard that it could reach from the road that was not islanded off across from the apartment and market burgers. I looked at them and then the whole table laughed. I ended that game with 0 dollars. I was not upset I lost, sure I did not win but that whole game was a story and a shared experience amongst players, I find I don't get those moments or at least as many in games that don't have that heavy interaction. I am not saying that I do not like games without interaction I have a diverse category including both heavy interaction and little interaction games. I am just saying that I find that complaint is invalid and deters a lot of people from these types of games when in reality the complaint, at least from what I have found, does not really ever happen in these types of games. That is just my thought.

Great review as always! Coordinated outfits to match the aesthetic of the box? (If unintentional it’s a happy accident) I haven’t ventured into heavy strategy games yet (most of my group seems to prefer party / theme / mid-weight) but seeing your enthusiasm makes me want to try games like Barrage out.
@BoardOfItReviews
@BoardOfItReviews 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you!! Haha it was totally unintentional 😂 I was thinking when we both sat down to film, are we going to blend into the boxes?! This really is one of our favourites so would encourage anyone to try it - it plays quite nicely at 2 (even if it’s a bit less tight for spaces) so if you can get even one person to give it a try - still worth it in our opinion!

How intuitive is the gameplay? I found games like Brass Birmingham / Lancashire and Pipeline easy to teach in my group, because everything makes sense in the gameplay. But we had a reeeally slow time with On Mars because the rules got in the way everytime we tried to do something. Does it have a lot of 'what if's in the rules or is it streamlined?
@BoardOfItReviews
@BoardOfItReviews 3 жыл бұрын
It's fairly intuitive. Much like Brass, once you understand the rules of the 'system', the actions you do aren't complicated. I think much of the heaviness in the rating on BGG comes from the myriad of strategies, the tightness of gameplay, and the fact that mistakes will cost you. Nothing like On Mars for sure. Still the hardest game we've ever learnt to play, and I know exactly what you mean.

Great video! How does this game compare to Brass Birmingham? Which one do you think is better?
@BoardOfItReviews
@BoardOfItReviews 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! That's a tough one as they are wildly different games! Also a tough question as they'd probably both be in our top ten lists. Brass is excellently and intricately designed, but it is still an economic euro game with limited interaction (although probs more than most), so you've gotta like dryness. Barrage as a theme is more unique and interesting, and the gameplay is more interactive and cutthroat and brutal. Honestly couldn't recommend one over the other because they are so different but equally brilliant it would completely depend on who you were and what you wanted.

Hahahaha more or less. If we had some spare time we probably would have mentioned what a table hog it is. But it actually doesn't feel too bad in play. I mean it does take up a lot of space, but everything is main - board based, so it's not one of those games where you need lots of space per player in addition and spaces for piles of different tokens and resources etc., rather just a little corner for your moderately sized player board.
