God, I love watching experienced craftsman work. Its so obvious that he's done this many times before, and he's willing to pass his experience on to those who are willing to learn . No batteries, no extension cords, no computers. Made in USA. Thanks for sharing this little bit of disappearing hands-on America.

Thank you so much for this! I'm collecting rainwater into one of these barrels from a rain chain and I need to get the top off to do that. I don't plan on replacing it, but just setting it on top during the dry season. Haven't tried it yet, but everything he said all his expertise all his artistry made so much sense thank you again.

12:24 another youtube video mentioned how coopers used to set the headhoop "proud" (sticking out) so the wood wouldn't soak up water on the ground and spoil the beer during storage and also so the staves wouldn't rot and chip so easily.

I just removed the head of a whiskey barrel after watching this video. I used a regular hammer and chisel. It worked well. Easy and fast.
