Barry Windham discusses the ramifications of Ric Flair leaving WCW and how it affected Barry's spot as Champion. Stream New Shoot Interviews 📺 TitleMatchNetwork.com
WWE Hall of Famer Barry Windham talks about his time in WCW (World Championship Wrestling) and how he grew up with Ric Flair as a neighbor and trainer.
Years later, Windham and Flair would wrestle each other easily over 100 times with many of them being one hour long matches. Find out why Ric Flair leaving WCW with the Championship ruined Barry's chance of getting a run with the gold.
Flair was scheduled to drop the belt to Windham but after a fight with WCW mangament (Jim Herd specifically) Ric decided to leave for WWF and take the title with him. So afterwards, Lex Luger got the spot as Champion instead of Barry.
Originally produced by RF Video Inc in 2002. Licensed for distribution on Title Match Network.

10:43 - how did the WWF abuse the Big Gold Belt? They referred to it as the REAL world’s title and called the WWF belt horse manure in comparison. Then they made the WCW champion, Flair, their own champion to show that the WCW champion was the best wrestler in the world. If anything they showcased that the top WCW guy was superior to all the WWF guys.

Ric says he offered to drop the strap to Barry but Herd wanted it to go to Luger

I have always found it hard to believe that Barry Windham was in line to win the NWA/WCW World Heavyweight Championship from Ric Flair in 1991. They were both wrestling as heels; and they were both in The Four Horsemen. Unless , the promotion was going to turn Barry babyface. Otherwise, I always thought the popular belief was that Flair woukd put Lex Luger over in the steel cage match at The Great American Bash 1991. It seems to me it was Luger's turn to finally have the World Belt . I'm sure Jim Herd probably thought that Flair would do the honors for Luger; and then if he left afterwards Herd wouldn't have cared one way or another.

B.W. is a top 3 wrestler in my opinion but i think his view on flair going to wwf is too myopic. he, at least at this time, was only looking at it from his perspective. Flair had been shafted on his deal and on his way out they refused to give him the deposit he put down on the belt. it had nothing to do with not wanting to do the job for windham
@nateinindy3460

I think Barry has a bunch of facts wrong here. Part of the issue was that Luger was getting the title, and Flair thought Barry should. Not the other way around. But Flair left because of fuckery by Jim Herd, not because he did or didn’t want to put either of them over. Yeah, the NWA belt being in the WWF wasn’t a great look, but the WWF did nothing to hurt its credibility. It made who was left in the NWA look bad, but not the title. WCWs mistake was trying to censor the belt a d suing to get it back and all that nonsense. They should have just said, “they can have that old thing, our new belt is the real prize”. Not doing that and pining hard for that old belt hurt them more than anything.

When Stan Hansen was AWA World Champion Verne Gagne told him he wanted Stan to drop the strap before he went to Japan where he was OVER. Stan wouldn’t but he was so incensed that he drove and reversed over the belt MANY TIMES before he returned it to Verne. But by the time Verne got the desecrated belt back he’d already commissioned a bigger better belt

Flair does a 10 minute match and repeats that over and over until he hits the time required. You’ll watch 8 military press slams, 100 knife edge chops, 4 figure-four reversals, 5 Flair face flops, 7 tosses off the top turnbuckle, 15 back drops, etc. in THE SAME MATCH Horrible.
@bigj6143
@bigj6143 3 ай бұрын
I don't agree, yes he repeats moves, but you have to know how to work. Work in the ring with opponents, work the crowd, you have to understand these guys work with each other so much. For fans in attendance it is their show, their time to watch their favorites. For the wrestlers, just another day at the office, same ring, venues look the same, crowd looks the same. Certain shows may look somewhat different because of the crowd size, wrestlemania, starcade, Madison Square garden etc., but for every big show like that these guys did countless other small venue shows and were expected to perform. Perform and cover an hour in doing so, not easy to change things up all the time. Safety concerns, protecting yourself, protecting your opponent, one thing about Flair was his ability to take bumps and falls to the mat properly. In fact, he was the best at that. He spent very little if any time injured and out for any extended period of time. Hard to find anyone else that had the impact type matches he had for that length of time practically night after night that spend little to no time injured. Your performers today just cannot do that. Most wrestle for a few months then next thing you know they are having surgery and gone for 9-12 months. They get a pop when they return or let go if they are not main event guys or gals.

@@bigj6143 I never mentioned wrestlers of today. I haven’t watched wresting for 20 years because it’s trash. But that doesn’t make Flair any less overrated. I tried to watch a Sting vs Flair match from a WCW Saturday night show in 1993 and it was just the same spots repeated for 40 minutes. I have a few Flair DVD sets and it’s the same thing. It’s bad enough to have the same match every night but another level to have the same match multiple times within ONE match and then have that match every night. It’s just lazy. Put some thought into it. Review your matches. Try to change things up. There is no in-ring psychology when it’s the same all the time. There isn’t a story being told. It’s absolute garbage. Flair could have benefited greatly had his matches only gone 15-20 minutes each night.
@Brian316G
@Brian316G 3 ай бұрын
While I agree there is a repetitive nature to hour long match's and that has never changed. The over exaggeration is a bit comical, but sure you are making a point. We also see this in a ton of AEW matches and fans love it. I don't. I would rather a 15 Minute banger than an hour of rest holds etc. That said I don't want twenty finishers with kickouts or finishers being used repeatedly as generic moves either. And yes this is actually very easy to accomplish.
