They had several completely different sounding hits before this song, he ain't heavy and the air that I breath when Graham Nash, from Crosby Stills and Nash was in the group. Some where, Bus Stop, Carrie Anne and Stop,stop,stop. These earlier songs sounded more like early Beatles type stuff. Surprisingly, though, the vocals from the early songs sound completly different, very high pitched and like a teenagers, it's the same singer in all the songs.

Thank you for saving me the trouble of looking up the lyrics! I’m 62 and I have never been able to decipher what he was saying, except for a few words or phrases. I just thought he was talking about seeing a beautiful woman in a bar. I had no idea there was gun play or criminal activity in the song.

This was a banger of a song (52) years ago back in 1972. I was an 18-year-old senior in high school. This song came on at my high school senior prom dance, and everybody was getting down. Didn't realize this guy was working for the FBI as an undercover operator at an illegal bootlegging operation at the bar. But the "Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress" and the DA man congratulated him on a job well done. Now I am a 70-year-old senior citizen listening to the music of my youth. Awesome.

What I remember about this group is that Graham Nash (Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young) left the Hollies and then they had a series of smash hits including this one. He even commented on the irony in an interview. Per the internet: The singer, who is an FBI agent, is in a speakeasy filled with criminals. He falls for an attractive 5'9" woman in a black dress and helps rescue her when gun shots ring out.

When I was 11, my older sister convinced our Mom to take us to our 1st concert at the local high school basketball stadium. It was The Hollies, Herman's Hermits & The Grass Roots. That began my love of live music. Over the next 15 years, I went to approx 150 concerts & music festivals during the greatest era of music in the history of mankind. #blessed

Great reaction, Sam and Phil! The Hollies music started in the 60s and lasted into the 90s. Their music changed throughout and that's why the songs were so different. Early songs are Bus Stop and Carrie Ann. You'll also like He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother.

This has been in Movies: Air America, Remember the Titans, Amores Perros, The Longest Yard, The Lovely Bones, Trouble with the Curve, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, and Kong: Skull Island. One of the few songs they do with no 3 part harmonies. Great tune. Check out the 1st song I heard by them which was their 14th single I think, big favorite of mine... 'Bus Stop' (1966). Cheers.

This song went to #2 on the charts in 1972. Lead singer Allan Clarke left the band for a solo career after this was recorded. He returned because his solo wasn't taking off and this song did.

This has been one of my favorite rock songs of all time since I was a little kid and it was on the radio all the time. Later I really got into The Hollies and you could tell that this was a bit later after some of their earlier hits and it was different, but it became a huge hit and I absolutely love this song, and in fact it is exactly what got me into exploring older Hollies. Growing up, a lot of people actually thought that Creedence Clearwater Revival did this, lol. It's an absolutely fantastic dance song, and I know that I personally never really tried to figure out the story of it until I was much older. I loved just the phrases and images and a little hints of meaning cascading down but the music and the feel of it was overwhelmingly the main experience of it. And I absolutely love his voice and delivery on this. It's just perfect for this. It sounded so hip at the time.

They had so many hit songs such as "Bus Stop", "Stop Stop Stop", "He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother", "On A Carousel", "Carrie Anne", "Here I Go Again", "Look Through Any Window", "King Midas In Reverse", "Jennifer Eccles" etc. "Graham Nash" was originally in this group & left in 1968 to form "Crosby, Stills & Nash".

Those are all great. My favorite is "Pay You Back With Interest." I love that the hook has the slow whole notes, but the rest of the song is pretty up-tempo. "Look Through Any Window" is my second, "Bus Stop" is third. This song, though, is an outlier because it sounds completely different from their main body of work.

This was arguably their biggest hit and most played radio song. Great guitar riff and excellent use of reverb, which can be too much if not done well. I don't hear anything country tinges myself and really nothing bluesy either just pop/rock at its best. Their most heartfelt tune, with a strong social commentary/philosophy, is He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother. Great haunting harmonica. It's slower overall with strong, chill-inducing vocals and harmonies. This song always gets me emotional even almost 55 years after its release. This is a rare time I suggest the music video with He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother. Lead singer Allan Clarke can really emote; he has a great natural 'fro too for a white British guy.

The really cool thing about this song is the way its put together. I'm a guitar player, and I spent a long time trying to play this song. I got really close, but it just didn't ever sound right. Such a simple riff I thought. I eventually figured out, from seeing the video the first time, that there's actually 3 guitars playing this riff together, but all in perfect synchronization... but in different ways... mind blown lol... This song has a small favorite fond spot in my heart. Coming back and ending my 3 year voluntary service in the ARMY in Germany for the last time back in 1976 and sitting in the Airplane on the runway. I put the ear sets they provided and set the channel to Rock and roll. This was the first song up and jammed to it as the plane accelerated down the runway bringing me home to the bay area in California.

Hah hah, this was like hearing the national anthem when I was in school back in the 70's!!😍 Many years later, I actually learned to play it. That guitar intro is tricky to get it to sound just right. I finally managed to do it on a 335 Gibson clone with just the bridge pickup, lots of reverb, and some aggressive picking!😄 LOVE this song!😉👍👍👍

I think it is important to remember that many rock groups of the late 60s through much of the 70s, had really been into blues or honkytonk, as younger people, and they often emulated that in their own works later. The Hollies, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, The Who, and tons of others, large and small, sprinkled the stuff they grew up loving as homage, or as tribute, as many of them appreciated the old blues guys. Prog rock in many ways is a growth of rock and jazz. Just a thought. Great channel, and great reaction.

Back in that day, finding the lyrics written out wasn't as simple as requesting the info from Google, so I spent those years getting only pieces of the story. That didn't change the fact that I really liked the record and the fantastic vocal that made the lyrics so hard to understand.

First Hollies song I heard was "Bus Stop" and I fell in love with that song. They were looking for that film noir crime drama type of feel in this song. I think they got it. Check out "Bus Stop"!

"He Ain't Heavy" is another emotional easy song from them like "The Air That I Breath". In this song he was an FBI agent in a "nest of bad men" in a rough bar. The long cool woman was the singer.

Good ear, Sam. You picked right up on the scene being set. This was probably the Hollies coolest hit. "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" has got to be the most emotional.

Musicians in the 70's were super versatile. The Hollies are a great example of that. Another example is Alice Cooper. If you only know his hard rock stuff and listen to "You and Me" for the first time, you think it's the Alice Cooper from a parallel universe.

You N Me is a favorite Alice Cooper song of mine. It show more of what he's really like. That was the beauty of the music of the 60's into the late 70's, is every album by an artist or group had a different flavor to it.
