Except one problem: His reviews are almost strictly a test of a) how well the pizza approximates Dave's own favorite pizza and somewhat idiosyncratic taste; b) will depend to some extent on how much other pizza Dave ate and reviewed that day; c) will, with the exception of reminding Dave of his favorite pizza (or be too filling in the context of reviewing a whole lot of pizza that day, making "light" or "super-light" the two highest compliments), will be almost completely random. On the other hand, if a) you share Dave's exact taste in pizza, and b) are a pizza reviewer yourself who has to eat far more pizza than most people ordinarily would, these reviews are a precision, super-reliable guide. As to the objection that "any review is going to be somewhat subjective, reflecting the tastes of the reviewer"; this is not really true. The difference between what Dave does (maybe 30% actual quality review; 70% review-style entertainment) is that a real reviewer would give equal treatment to the various kinds of styles and tastes/preferences and try to judge each pizza "on its own terms."

What's crazy is, they're not even in Carthage. They're closer to Whispering Pines (hence the name) or Pinehurst. The place has a Carthage mailing address thanks our wacky postal service.

Yeah it has a Carthage address and they aren't familiar with the area. But it is actually right there on the Carthage/WP border...not really super close to Pinehurst.

😂 born and raised from this location. So glad you reaffirmed all the thoughts I had growing up. My parents live smack in the middle of whispering Pines, but because their plot of land wasn’t incorporated into Whispering Pines they got stuck with a Carthage address. When people ask me where I’m from, I have like three different responses. Hell, to anyone who doesn’t think this is a real problem, one time my parents witnessed a man on a bicycle get hit by a car outside their house, they watched the car speed off, and they called 911 to report the crime and it took them FOREVER to figure out which law enforcement group to send out because they had no idea what jurisdiction they were in.

Dave's sense of location and knowledge of geography: a solid 4.3 He usually knows what state he is in but beyond that it is hit or miss. Frankie gets a 9.1 because he gets it right, even down to the cross streets. Dave sometimes doesn't even know the name of the pizzeria unless it is printed on the box or appears in a giant neon sign outside the door.

Whispering pies is my local spot here. Army guy stationed out here originally from Jersey. 5.8 is a good score for here. There is a spot in southern pines called sopies that people love. I’d say it’s a 5-6 spot. Up in Raleigh there’s a spot called Vic’s Italian restaurant that I think is the best North Carolina pizza I’ve tried so far

I was never expecting to see a pizza review in my old stomping grounds. I'm from the Raleigh area, but I lived near Carthage for a few years when I was working at a golf course located in West End, NC (Seven Lakes Golf Club). Well known for it's golf...not so much for it's pizza.

He must be in town to play golf. It’s in the 90s with crazy humidity so not a great time to visit. The Moore County Airport is across the street from Whispering Pies which is in Whispering Pines. So Pies is in Southern Pines. Real creativity in naming pizza joints. Everything around here is Pines, even all the trees (duh).
