The last in a series featuring Michael Bartier, the winemaker and a co-owner at Bartier Bros. Vineyards and Winery located on the Black Sage "Gravel Terrace" in the Oliver region of South Okanagan Valley, BC. Bartier talks about maceration, looking back at a particularly difficult (hot) 2015 vintage. Determined to save a "beast" of a syrah crop, Bartier employed a labour-intensive maceration method. We hear why the choice of maceration is important and learn to appreciate how each vintage presents a different set of circumstances forcing winemakers to understand their options in a decision-making tree that could lead to failure or success.
