Bartitsu, known for its walking stick self defence and from Sherlock Holmes, is a mixed martial art of the Victorian era.
We teach Bartitsu at Academie Duello every week, and for new students or those who just want a taste of this elegant method of fighting must attend our Introductory Workshop.
The workshop is 4 hours of overview in all 4 domains and how they integrate together.
We start at the closest range with jujitsu, the foundation of this art's name, with its importer from Japan, E.W. Barton-Wright. Bart-itsu
Next, we look at Scientific Boxing, also known as Bare knuckle or simply Fisticuffs. Modern boxing has evolved differently because of the use of those big boxing gloves.
Savate, or French Kickboxing, incorporated low kicks into the Londoner's repertoire. We don't spend too much time on that, since everyone's favourite is the...
Walking stick self defence or La Canne Vigny.
Most importantly, this isn't a collection of random moves, but an integrated system of defence, so we investigate the ways each discipline flows into the other.
The students you've been watching are beginners themselves, our regular classes increase your skills dramatically.
If you're into Steampunk or Victorian fashion this is the martial art for you, but as you can see, we don't dress up in costumes. It isn't a fashion show, it's effective self-defence from an era when gentlemen were expected to put ruffians in their place.
Please join us for the next workshop Saturday or check the calendar at Academie Duello.com to find other dates.

My first Bartitsu class was over 3 years ago. We started with stickfighting, unlike other martial arts that do not introduce weapons until the advanced stages of their programs. Been loving Bartitsu ever since the first class and have been putting a lot more effort into expanding the Savate reportoire the last couple of months.

i am a researcher who has been studying and practicing for a while now i am in the process of creating more practical applications for la canne using batons i enjoy seeing that there are clubs that are not dressing up for it cause i find it to be rather a insult to the legacy to do so and seeing as no one trained like that when training why should we ive enjoyed this and hope to see more

Excellent - and of course, there are reference works available authored by Yukio Tani. There's also the interesting connection between Barton-Wright and the suffragette movement

I do bartitsu but as a practical self-defense course so the lessons are more situational than this which appears to be more for acting. It is interesting to see the differences.

congratulations on having the first batitsu video i have seen that has students that have the grace and bearing that you are suposed to maintain at all times possible. unfortunatly most the other videos have been full on padded stick fights, and this is not the way i had interpreted Barton-Wrights teachings, i taught a doorstaff selfdefence class that used a highly bastardised form of the open hand part of bartitsu to great effect ..

Surprising to see so many keyboard warriors slamming Bruce Lee. Without his lead it is unlikely Kung Fu, and many other Oriental martial arts would have come to the West. Does it really matter who "first" developed the forerunner of MMA? His name is the one most people know. He was a phenomenal athlete, whether he was any good at really fighting, we have only the word of people who knew him. JKD may not technically have been the first mixed martial art, taking from many different styles, but even today many people know little of cross-training. I used to belong to a Karate club which expressly forbid membership of other clubs. The reason given was that people could not learn two different styles properly at the same time. The real reason was money. I had already spent over 20 years cross-training so it was accepted that I knew things not taught at the club. MMA (and BJJ) was specifically developed for competitions and winning trophies, it is not first and foremost a street fighting style. What a lot of less knowledgeable people do not seem to understand is that what you train for is what you will do. If you train to go for submissions, arm bars, and not to really harm your attacker, that is what you will do in the street. Muscle memory will take over. I am not dissing many very highly trained people, just stating a fact. If you want trophies, all well and good, but if you want to become an effective street fighter then learning any system with rules, referees, rounds, rings, and a paying audience (or non-paying) is not the way to go. If you want to succeed when attacked outside the dojo or ring, read up on the MMA rules, especially on things that are banned, and learn to do them when attacked.

It would probably be awful to see. Bartitsu practicioners don't spare for real and use only exoctic moves. No one fights like that irl. It might be useful if you adapt it but not the way it's normally performed

Bruce Lee made martial arts main stream, regardless if he invented MMA or not. And he was all about using the whole body, for a street fight. There are 25 banned rules in UFC, 15 you should do in a street fight. Downward elbows, biting, headbuts, stomping, knee destruction, jabbing the eyes, hitting the throat, and kicking the groin. There are no rules to his fighting approach. The idea is to get home safely, whatever means necessary, which includes running away - because thr assailant could have a knife or a gun. You dont wanna go against those guys lol

The narrator said "We don't dress up in costumes..." The Japanese and Chinese attire worn in martial arts classes are not "costumes," but are the traditional clothes worn in those countries where these arts are practiced. It was simply what they were comfortable wearing in their Asian culture; those who wear western clothes may feel more comfortable in their own attire, and it does serve the purpose since that's what they will be wearing in a real altercation.
@FrankieBlueEyes
@FrankieBlueEyes 6 жыл бұрын
He is not talking at all about Asian culture. He is referring to other organizations that practice Bartitsu that often dress up in early 1900s attire when practicing the art.
