On some of the old Petter diesel engines we had to do an ACTUAL clearance measurement for the piston and cylinder head. Remove the injector and feed a piece of lead solder into the combustion chamber then slowly roll the engine over 2 revolutions. Pull the solder out and measure the thin spots for your clearance. Those old school engineers were amazing. I loved working on the Budda and Gardner diesels the most... Those inline 8 cylinders were soooooo smooth.

For the floor under engines: proper drip trays or 1000 Gauge poly sheeting (the blue stuff) with oil mats. Saves hours and very surprised that your H & S Officer (ahem!!) hasn't made a fuss about oil on your floor (let alone on your expensive new floor covering).....

why don't you make some drip trays to fit in the engine stands so you don't get oil on the floors

from back when i was a kid helping my grandfather with his small engine shop to building V8s as an adult, it's been therapeutic to me. nothing calms me more than rebuilding an engine with my hands. even the real dirty ones. lol

Trichloroethylene heated tanks used to degrease so much better in the old days. I used to dip my hand in before T-break to get all the grease off. :) :)

Excellent videos but you should have draining tray on one or two of your engine stands to keep your floor clean when stripping old engines,

Hope the 200 blocks are ok. I've had dealings with buying Cortina bits in Portugal , crown wheel and pinion which were different ratio but sold as a 4.1-1. Had to get a refund. Keep your fingers crossed.

Be aware that the valves aren't central to the bore....... and standard rockers are generally 1.3:1 ratio.

I was going to suggest using builders plastic sheet. Cheap, thick and strong on a roll. It certainly would reduce the mess around the engines.

Hi The outcome of the football wasn't to shabby, if it were the Olympics it would have been a silver. Still I'm not bothered by football rugby is the the one for me You were talking ring end gaps. I had a merc m111 block bored and sleeved back to std and on checking the bores there were only three points that were over the standard bore size and by only 2 microns great job me thinks And on checking the ring end gaps of genuine mahler pistons only one ring was so tight it could not be fitted all the others were spot on. Just goes to show always check and check again Any way Ireland beat the springboks
