I've had failing rockers due to the previous owner fitting the wrong springs, it was fine when the engine was cold but when hot the springs were squashing right up, couldn't push the valve down any more so caused the rocker to fail, or sometimes the lug securing the rocker shaft would fracture and lift up ..

Always find it bizarre people blame you for a problem but they want you to sort it out!!

On the A series motor, check the clearance between the bottom of the cotter retainer and the top of the valve guide. The replacement cam has a higher lift than the standard cam and the extra lift might just take up all of the clearance there. The push-rod would be able to handle the pain of slight binding but the rocker would take some punishment and eventually fail. I cant remember what style guide seal those motors had but maybe the replacement ones were a bit thicker (umbrella type) or were a bit too long (pressed onto the valve guide. Remove the rocker assembly and see if you can put a thickish piece of copper wire bent properly into the plug hole to hold the valve closed and remove the cotters and strip out the spring. Put the cotter retainer back with the cotters and use a piece of zim pad sponge to put a small amount of pressure to stop the retainer moving down the valve, take out the wire and turn the motor to full lift. You can then cut some of the sponge away to see/measure what the clearance is. Another thing you can check is that the springs are not binding at full lift. Also, some people added a spring made from thinnish flat material (some called them dampeners I think) but as far as I was concerned, they were useless. Private job motors that I built got a genuine set of double spring that never gave an ounce of crap. On the motors that needed a "blueprint spec" rebuild we made sure that all the spring base to cotter retainer measurements were the same (used shims below the springs to adjust) and made sure that all the springs had the same reading when compressed to that distance. Did it help? We thought so but then again we would. I don't think that even one of the motors I did ever dropped a valve as far as I know.

Have you ever seen a video on Morel lifters. I forget who published it. They got to a point where top fuel drag race roller lifters were discussed. Teams were breaking the roller needle bearings and the pins they roll on. Turned out the point in the combustion cycle they were opening the exhaust valves and the valve diameter created enough force on the valve stem, that the roller strength was exceeded. The answer Morel came up with was to install a second roller above the roller that rides on the cam. There was very little preload pushing down, just enough that when you roll the cam follower lifter, the upper also rotates. This split the load on each set of needle bearings, curing the breakage problem. I can not imagine a situation in which a naturally aspirated engine could break the rockers. Top fuel engines are highly supercharged and develop huge cylinder pressures. To get the huge volume of combustion gases out for blowdown before opening the intake valve, an early exhaust opening timing must be used, leading to the high cylinder pressure still left in the cylinder. These engines are about 7 liter displacement and produce in the range of 12,000HP for 3 to 4 seconds. Between runs they have about an hour to remove the heads and oil pan, possibly inspect a main bearing or 2, and put new rod and piston assemblies in and bolt the heads back on and adjust the valves. From blowby, the oil is contaminated and green from the nitro methane, so is changed.

One of my regrets was after I finished my C&G L3 diploma my engineering lecturers wanted me to do my HNC and HND, but I couldn't afford to do them, and had no sponsorship, plus having been in full time education for 14 years, was sick of it, but 20 odd years later it is now something I regret.

More skills: Isaac is doing a great job. Perhaps you can show him how to prepare the invoice for each of the engine builds that he works on.

A series engines are the simplest of all designs and totally reliable in standard form. What can go wrong? Well if you fit a non standard high lift camshaft plenty but surely Lee would have checked for the valve springs binding up on full valve lift wouldn't he? I honestly cant see what else could be at fault after this rebuild and short run before the rockers broke. Unheard of in an A series. As I understand things the valve spring seats are generally machined deeper to allow for a higher cam lift. Correct me if I'm wrong but it would be wise to go back and check your work before criticising the customer Lee.

Customers with complaints🦃 cant be avoided but maybe ask the complainant to have a think and make a written full list of their complaints and what resolution they require. Forward it to your solicitor. Ask solicitor for a template reply. Its about decoupling the complainer and yourself = worth it. Ok, it will £ cost but costs are recoverable and an allowable business expense. Good luck and thank you for the vlogs.

ALL 4 Rockers Broken, ONLY on the Exhaust Valves..... !!!!!!! Isn't maybe that the Valve Springs are now becoming 'Spring Bound' and can't be compressed any more as they are in the 'Solid' condition. Could be Wrong Springs, pulled of of the Box. I have Heard of this, but have not experienced it myself.... Coil binding comes to mind ,check the valve springs. on valve full open.

Coil bind on that A-series as others have pointed out. I've seen that happen with American V8s when builders end up playing component salad from a catalog based on what the customer wants or from not being ultra careful. Talking to A-series veterans may help.

Have came across two engines in my career so far that broke rockers, one was because the uprated valve springs were becoming coil bound at full lift and the other was an BMC Nuffield engine that had new exhaust guides fitted that were too long or else were not pressed in far enough so the valve spring cap was hitting the valve guide only just until an exhaust rocker broke. The pushrods had an ever so slight bend in them that was barely detectable until you rolled them on a surface plate.

I'd love to see more on a-series engines. The first engine I pulled apart was a 1300 (aka 1275) out of a Austin 1300 (ADO16) with much guidance from 2 of my brothers who were playing with Mini's of the same era and who are now mechanics. Lots of fond memories of that time.

Only time that I EVER broke a rocker Tower after installing a stage 1 cam, was caused by NOT having the proper springs

I don't agree that you have no friends in business. I would hope that many long-term customers also become friends. That is not to say that no customer will ever try to take advantage. I think there is a balance to find.

But trust me get as many Qualifications as you can while you're still in the education system. As once you're out of it it's a massive effort to get back in again It may take ten or mor years to appreciate the value but if you don't you will regret it then

I didn't get my engineering HNC until I was 45 .I'm an ex Pressed Steel/Austin Rover /BMW jig toolmaker.watching your channel i do pick up on the measuring equipment that you use daily in so much aa how do you know that your torque wrenches, dti's, straight edges are calibrated and within tolerance and ok to use. Engineering has changed from using old skills which are being lost to new tech skills. I went from toolroom to BIW vehicle assembly back to toolroom then the business changed due to age of skilled people leaving /passing away to being involved in a travelling team that consisted of design build install of new and modified tooling at customer plants. All using old skills of making nice new tooling actually work.Its surprising what skills that you rapidly learn ,eg the science of spot welding via the weld institute to reduce weld spatter injuries to operators . Enough of my rambling .enjoy the videos especially the k series builds (mgf owner)

It’s a cliche but … “sorry but it’s just business” isn’t a phrase you need to be shy of using. You’re going the right way - so much clearer for everybody, and then you earn more kudos for coming to an arrangement when something does come up that’s on you. Start on the front foot not the back 👍

i went to school with my local machine shop and head guy, when i have him do work for me, i don't expect any favors or special treatment and i grew up with him basically. but he does rush for me and gives me a discount all because he knows I'm not expecting it. i know his in business to make money, not coddle me.

The problem is he has Valve piston contact That is causing the problem, Timing ? He needs to check if he has coil binding if he runs it and checks the position of the rocker Arms and try changing the gap of the valve Clearance but more likely he has a cam Timing issue

1: Did you do the work you were asked to do? , 2: Did you supply the parts he asked you to obtain or did you recommend the replacement camshaft? If you recommended the replacement camshaft you had at least a moral obligation to inform the customer of any risks or special requirements associated with that part, in this case the timing issue. If the customer specifically asked you to acquire the camshaft at his own wish then it's up to him to get that specific information. Best example is the Landrover engine in the shop. You took on the work but informed the customer that the part to be fitted wasn't OEM and therefore would not have any warranty cover. Your responsibility lies ultimately with the quality of your work and any parts that you replace. If parts fail because they were badly manufactured then all costs should be covered by the manufacturer of those parts. Now to the sticky stuff. If you take a manufactured part and change it without the knowledge or consent of the manufacturer then it becomes your responsibility. e.g. you mill a piston without consulting the min. sizes and tolerances acceptable by the manufacturer. Cover yourself by stipulating in writing what liability you are prepared to take and any exceptions where the decision becomes the liability of the customer. Only do the work and use the parts that you are prepared to put the name of your company behind.

Lee, i hear what you are saying about making and losing friends. the real question i ask you is "are these friends or acquaintances". here's a little tale. a family i know just reopened after the son took over. he temporarily closed the business while he reset the business. he has gone almost 100% digital, i.e. everything is done and communicated via email and website. this has seemed to upset many of the older generations as they are not as efficient on computers as the younger. but he claims that he has better flows and accountability for both himself, his team and his clients/customers, as there is written evidence of what has been requested. any phone communication is followed up with an email, and he asks within that for confirmation before proceeding. he has claimed that he is currently more profitable with accounts being paid. there is less downtime, and wastage than when his father was running the business.

Issac, get all the schooling and qualification you have the opportunity. When I was a youth, neighbor boys baby sat us. The older brother eventually got a job with the Canadian government, working on the DEW Line. This was the Distant Early Warning radar installations in the far north, operated in conjunction with the US during the Cold War. To keep the young men busy during their off hours, the government paid for correspondence courses. Because the government was paying, they got to see exam results. This young man did very well with his studies, so the government would come to him with a proposition for more training, which he accepted. When he finished that he would get a promotion. Eventually they sent him to university for computer sciences. He eventually ended up as head programmer for a major government department with a rather large salary. Myself, I have 3 journeyman tickets; automotive mechanic, heavy duty mechanic, and instrumentation mechanic.

The customer is King, be a little flexible with the private customers, Garages etc will try it on and delay payments.

Young or old I don't care as long as they do a proper job with clear invoicing and breakdowns. A bit of banter is always good. But I can't stand listening to companies larging themselves up expecting you to fall for it. Or giving them a budget and then being told it's now a couple of grand or something over without being warned first.

I helped a friend with a p6 did the same broke a couple off rocker arms we put another rocker shaft on complete broke another one turned out our local machine shop hadn't put the valve guides in at the correct height hence valve cap hitting top off guide
