mikeworld39 I don't think so. Cauliflower ear happens when trauma to the ear causes the ear to develop a blood clot. Which then causes the cartilage to become separated from the connective tissue. So you can't get cauliflower elbow because the is no cartilage. Now I think l saw the videos you are talking about. Cauliflower elbow is more of a slang term. But the medical term for it is called a bursal sac. As far as prevention. Wear pads or keep it wrapped when possible. Better yet. Don't get slammed on your elbow.

bigbobabc123 It's pretty ironic because the only guys I've seen it happen to are experienced black belts, and a brown belt at my school who is a nurse and should have known better. When you drain the ear, most importantly you gotta find somebody who knows what they are doing, not just a volunteer willing to stick a needle in you. Next the syringe has to be the proper size, I can find out the exact size if you need, last, when draining the ear, you MUST do it slowly, very slowly, if you pull back on the plunger too quickly it will literally pull your ear inward, causing it to fold with strange looking wrinkles which harden and can look almost identical to cauliflower ear.

And who said, "a school nurse"? We don't have a "school nurse", my comment specifies, a brown belt student who is also a registered nurse attempted to drain his own ear at his own house one night after practice. One bad draw and his ear became permanently impacted looking, our teacher later explained that poor Brazilians try this all the time back in Brazil which is why they end up with even worse looking ears, because they don't go to the hospital, a draw isn't exactly the same as a "surgery" therefore people rather drain it themselves. Whether you find it to be the correct route of solving the problem or not, it's still the truth.

It doesn't harden quickly. I have drained mine myself and then use my ear splintz. They feel great if you keep them in the fridge

They can come from anything that causes trauma to the ear. So they can get it from boxing as well. But in grappling I think it mainly comes from take downs and front headlocks.

cauliflower ear happens because of blunt force trauma so any strike can cause it. it's actually significantly less likely in wrestling because striking isn't allowed, whereas in most other combat sports striking is legal. not to mention, in mma fighters sometimes deliberately aim their shots at the opponent's ears because it hurts

I gave up on the ears long ago.... in my experience it is mainly a genetic thing... Ive known 20 year black belts with only the tiniest bit, and Ive seen six month white belts get bad cases of it... to each their own, I don't even think about it and mine are just right I think... not like tumors but good enough where grapplers on the street know Im in the brotherhood.

as I understand it it comes mostly from wrestling or jiu jitsu (grappling in general)... you don't see many cauliflower ears on boxers or kickboxers
