Baseball's first stolen base exploited a loophole in the rulebook

Secret Base

6 жыл бұрын

Before the National League and the American League came together to form the MLB, baseball had some growing pains. One of which included an old rulebook that never thought to include rules about stealing bases. This made the first stolen base a bit awkward, as no one knew what to do.

It'd be hilarious if someone found a loophole these days on a big event in a big sport. Something like hiding a bike in orienteering or something stupid like that.

in a recent tour de france one of the bikers realized that he got a bad start right out of the gate and instantly fell getting a chance to re-do his start, this was widely mocked but it was completely legal.

In a Six Nations game between Italy and England in 2017, the Italian players would purposefully not contest rucks and have players in what the English players thought were offside positions. It turns out that because the Italians weren't contesting the ball, thus meaning there was no ruck, and because in rugby offside is based on the formation of a ruck, the Italians were not offside. Passing lanes were thus obstructed by Italian players standing in perfeclty places, killing the English attack. The ref said to two English players who questioned the tactic that he's just a referee and not their coach. The Italians lost 36-15.

Ruth is still the true home run king. Keep in mind some stadiums had 500+ foot walls. Ruth would've hit an estimated 1100 homers with todays stadium dimensions. Including several 100 homer seasons, and many 60+ Homer seasons. Remember, a 460 foot bomb wasn't a Homer in some stadiums... oh and the strike zone then went to to your shoulders

Brandenv31 4, Hmm, you're tingling my memory circuits. The National League (out of the ashes the National Association) was declared to extant for the 1876 season. The American League (out of the ashes of the minor American League -- which came out of the ashes the minor Western League) declared itself to be a "major league" for the 1901 season. My understanding is that the terms "major" and "minor" league have to do with the league's teams willingness to pay top dollar for their players. BUT, I do recall that the term "Major League" (just to differentiate themselves from minor leagues) came into existence via a loose association between the National and American Leagues that required them to pay their players for post-season play (among other things). So, it may be correct to say that Major League Baseball, as an incorporated entity, began in 1903. But it churns my butter to suggest that major league baseball didn't exist in, say, 1884, when Old Hoss Radbourn won a record 59 games. I am, pending convincing argument to the contrary, willing to concede the factual point (that "Major League Baseball" "officially" began in 1903) to the presenter. But, I still contest his assertion that the year 1886 was one year after the formation of the National League. The National League began in 1876 and I see, watching the video again, that he did mention that 1877 was the first time stolen bases were "mentioned as a stat", then mentioned that 1886 was the first year that stolen bases were "consistently tracked". I am convinced, now, that the armchair editors of the text simply misplaced the phrase "a year after the formation of the National League". On first listen, I assumed it was shoddy research. Now I presume that it's sloppy scriptwriting. Still, that doesn't excuse the presenter from presenting falsity as fact. He should have caught that mistake as quickly as I did, so neither of us would've been embarrassed. :-D Cheers!
