Years ago, I called our local sports radio and asked why major leaguers, with two outs, in extra innings, and bases loaded, the runner from 1st base fails to overrun 2nd base on attempted force out. Overrun it like they do at 1st to get there quicker. This way, you would need to be tagged out while rounding toward 3rd base. Meanwhile runner from third scores for winning run, ballgame over. It happens more than you think, a shortstop's throw from the hole gets the runner by a whisker. Anyway, the radio guy gave me short thrift on air and almost laughed at the stradegy. Years later, Bobby Valentine, as commentator on a nationally televised game said one should never overrun 2nd base unless it wins a ballgame as I described. Way to go Bobby. To this day though I have never seen it done.

@AirtimeThrills3 жыл бұрын
I know, considering you're allowed to let a pop up bunt drop
@russellcurtis25013 жыл бұрын
@@AirtimeThrills Has to do with contact. If you don't touch the ball, it's legal. If that sharp line drive was a soft line drive that he could have allowed to bounce, that would have worked. I'm a Dodger fan but find this funny they don't learn from history. Bill Russell did the exact same thing in the 1977 (I think?) World Series. Reggie Jackson was the runner on first and he leaned his hip into the throw to Garvey at first. The umpires did not make either call and let the play stand as is. With the deflected throw Thurman Munson scored from second. So Russell would have been better off just catching the line drive.
