Is there only one key to your cat’s happiness? Of course not. But the concept of what I call Basecamp would be a finalist for the crown of Cat keys, that’s for sure.
Cat Mojo orbits around territorial security. It’s all about a sense of ownership of territory and what you do inside of what you own. Basecamp is the embryo of ownership - so learn it, and put it into action!

My girlfriend and I just adopted our first cat Chester, a 3 year old male. We tried to do base camp, but he literally wanted to explore the whole place on the first day. He WOULD NOT stay in the bathroom or bedroom to save our lives. He’s the sweetest cat I’ve ever met though. It’s day three and HE WILL NOT STOP SNUGGLING either of us (mostly me though, I’m much warmer lmao). Thank you Jackson Galaxy for both the great advice, and pushing us towards adoption.

Some times that works with some not shy, not traumatized cats or you have no other pets at home you can let them roam your home the first day. Need to block off places so they cannot hide like under recliner chairs, couches, under beds, under furniture that are open in the back like hutch. Have something else like a box turned upside down, cat tent etc. for safer options for them to find for small space to hide and easier for you to find them. If you have a home basement not to let them explore until a later date and block off crawl spaces, behind washer and dryers etc. When I had a single cat that passed away my husband and I decided to adopt 2 cats from the same foster home that became friends and the foster mom had them set up in the same room in foster care. We decided to adopt them both and they got along great with each other. We did not set up a base camp for them we just let them roam the house right away to explore and blocked off areas we thought they could get trapped or something or hide. They both were ready to explore and did not want to be confined, confident cats. They were familiar with our home in a few days and all they had to do was work out the territories that was their favorite places and routine with us. There was no introduction needed they already knew each other from their foster home. This does work with no previous pets at home, single cats or a pair that you adopt together that have been introduced at shelter or foster home setting. Go by your individual case and take each cats personality and not being traumatized from their past prior to being put in a shelter or foster home before you adopted them. Shy , abused, stray single cat would be much better in a small space camp set up for them first in your home and see how long it depends on their own terms not our preference for speed to get them adjusted to their new environment, smells , sounds and getting to know you their new pet parent.

I made a ton of mistakes with basecamp. I have a small house. 3 bedrooms and 1 bath. All small rooms. Two rooms are bedrooms, mine and my husbands. The other bedroom is part storeroom and base camp for our 1st two cats. We also have two dogs. So my bedroom is a hangout for the two dogs mostly. The dogs tend to race around the house. The 1st two cats have made more scent soakers in different places including my room (least used due to dogs) and the two other bedrooms. When we adopted 2 additional adult male brothers, I thought the better option was to put the new brothers in my bedroom for basecamp, because my bedroom was used more by the dogs. However this resulted in my dogs not being with me as much, my other cats becoming crazy with frustration at not getting in my room and the new cats at not getting out. So, I am considering moving base camp for the new cats to the third bedroom which has 2 litter boxes and is mostly storage but has high shelving where one of our first cats loves to hang out. I am wondering if the move would be a bad idea, but right now it seems like the entire animal community (2 dogs and now four cats) are very unhappy. If I move their basecamp to the third room, the move will upset 5he new cats and the one cat who will lose his room, but it hopefully would result in 3 cats being unhappy versus all six animals being unhappy. The introductions have been going on 7 weeks now. I have been using Jackson’s flower essences to help with stress and bullying the past three weeks, but it doesn’t seem to be working. Any thoughts or feedback? I’m desperate. 😊

I've been watching so much of your videos about adopting another cat and introduction lately. A couple of weeks ago, I went to the vet to take out a couple of teeth on one of my two cats, he had been low lately and they found an aggressive type of cancer under the tongue and throat.. so I went home without him. My other cat have never been alone before (also adopted) and is not her self. Tomorrow I am going to visit a cat that needs an forever home and I am so thankful for all the videos you have to prepare. I do wish you were available in Sweden during coming intro. These videos really matters!

I have had many cats during my life so far... more than most due to work rescuing, working with and finding homes for many feral cats. I didn't just fix a colony I dismantled it and sent all adoptable cats (which was most of them) to new homes. But one that had claimed me - my Fuzzy Face - had his own basecamp and I didn't have to do anything but make sure we had two bathrooms. His basecamp was always a bathtub. He would choose which one and that was it. When stressed he would go sleep in the tub. When he passed away he chose the bathtub as well. He went to sleep in there and didn't wake up. I found him in the morning. - Heidi

Jackson Galaxy always gives great advice. When I adopted our last cat I asked the rescue to give us an item like a blanket or cat bed the cat we were adopting and bringing it to her our home so she knew she was staying and has something with her scent on it. It made her more comfortable less nervous in her new space camp room /sanctuary room set up for her and doing slow introduction to another resident cat. I was surprised the rescue said they never have people ask or give the adopter and item. To this day that blanket that came with her is her favorite base camp blanket. They did give us a blanket she has been using and then we turned around and bought some blankets to give to the rescue to replace the one they gave to us. I highly recommend asking a shelter rescue for an item that has the cats, mother cats or siblings scent on it and if you can have it when you adopt a kitten or cat and turn around and donate to help with supplies or buy them extra blankets, cat beds, toys etc. for giving you and item for your new adopted kitten or cat you and bring to your home. If they don't have an item for them to have a blanket to rub on them, mother cat or siblings if you get a kitten from a litter that were still there when you adopt. It really helps all animals adjust even dogs having an item to take home. It is nice having something in the carrier as for a kitten or cat travel to their new home something they are familiar with. Also helps them feel at home in their new space camp room you set up for them. It does help a kitten adjust without momma cat or their siblings in a single adoption or cat adjust so much better having something with their scent on it since they have had so much change, separation prior to you adopting them brings stability especially the first few days in space camp having an item they are familiar with. Just like some cats that get returned to shelter because own dies or needs to go into nursing home etc. and cannot keep them or family do not want them. It also helps if previous owner can give you items from their home for the cat like a small cat tree, cat bed an item that smells their previous owner helps to avoid severe depression and the animal in shock losing their stable home and the owner they loved. I remember a story a friend of mine who does rescue found out an owner could not keep their senior cat and it was having a very hard time in the shelter and the cat had nothing from its previous home and it almost died from depression, anxiety, scared and refusing to eat. My friend took the cat home and they were luck to get hold of the previous owner and family before they through out all the cats belongings my friend was able to get the cats previous cat tree, litter box and a few other items. The finally started eating and gaining my friends trust after she brought in items that the cat was familiar with. The next morning the cat came out of hiding in her space camp where my friend has her set up and was able to start connecting with the cat and she was asleep on her cat tree and ate the food she had set out for her. The cat recovered from the trauma of leaving the only home she knew since she was a kitten and was 10 years old the cat. My friend made sure to find this senior cat quiet single home to live the rest of her life in and the cat tree and a few other items went with her to her new permanent home. Also my friend that does rescue would visit the cat to help new owner with her transition since she was a foster mom to this senior cat.

What a great idea! I'm going to do it and request the shelter consider building it into the adoption fee if needed to send every adopted cat home with an item with their scent in the carrier so they'll not feel so overwhelmed when entering their new environment. Can you imagine how many lives are brighter because Jackson volunteered to work in a shelter and has helped all of us be even better Guardians for our companions ? I'd feel so good if I could look back upon my life as having helped improve the world so much. He's still going, too! I missed his new live show by a day but have to join and support him as he's helped all of us learn to pay it forward in Trap Neuter Release [ TNR] programs to help stop the tough existances cats living without homes experience. The growing number of feral cats who never learned to trust humans while young and are hidden under structures sometimes with only one or two people trying to provide some food on incomes that are not providing excess funds but they can't sit back and ignore animals in need across our country. The fact that we still are killing millions of healthy animals in shelters per year is so tragic and preventable. Please be proactive and always have your animals fixed so we can stop this travesty from occurring any longer. Bless you all for caring enough to learn more about how to improve your pets quality of life while under your care.

@aqravianl3292
@aqravianl3292 3 жыл бұрын
@@lM3LODYl A good rule of thumb is that you should have one litter box per cat plus one (& should be scooped on a daily basis - think of it in terms of having to use a porta potty that hasn't recently been cleaned So with just the one cat, I'd suggest putting one in the living room and one in your bedroom. That way kitty always has access to a potty box whether your bedroom door is left cracked open or not. You may also need to play around with the placement of your cat's potty boxes to find out where they are more comfortable alleviating themselves. For instance, I had this one cat that refused to use the litter box and kept going potty under my bed until I moved his potty box into a corner. I rarely had a problem after that.

I was the only one who could handle him and I can tell you stories of his attacks. 1. A friend had never laid on a water bed before and wanted to try it out. I didn’t think anything about it and I let her try it out. Bam, Bugs attacked her as soon as she laid down in my bed. 2. An old boyfriend was setting on the end of my bed and he was playing rough with my Alaskan Malamute. Bugs thought Neeka was being hurt and true to Bugs form, he jumped in the middle of his back and dug in with his claws. As fast as it happened he was gone. Hit and run. No more boyfriend! 3). I had to leave for a few days so I asked my sister to feed him. She fed him but tried to pick him up and got bit and scratched. She hit Bugs with her tennis shoe. Bugs never forgot. Every time Bugs would see my Sis he would hiss and growl. That’s just a small picture of one of the loves of my life. Luckily the man I married got along with Bugs. My little sweetheart lived to almost twenty years. He did have a very unique personality! To this day I still miss him. I enjoyed two more Manx cats after my boy, Bugs.

The timing for this video is impeccable. I'm moving out from my parents' house with my 12yo tortoiseshell Chiquita, and I've been trying to figure out the best way to bring back apartment scents and transport house scents to the apartment so it's not as big a shock for her. My new roommate isn't quite a cat lover like I am, but she likes my cat enough to let me try catifying the space. However...I'm not sure where to set up base camp. The apartment doesn't have any doors except the exteriors, the bathroom, my roommate's bedroom, and a storage room. The storage room is right next to the main living area, though there's also some space up top in the main living area. At my parents' home, she runs to a quiet room when people come over. If things quiet down or she smells food, she'll peek out. There's a high shelf (mostly unused) in the main living area, and I suppose making that base camp could get her more used to people, or maybe I could section off an area of my no-door bedroom. Any thoughts from someone who's done this before?

Know this is a few months old, don’t know if you’ll even see this but just wanted to say thanks to both you and Kitten Lady. I have always loved cats (which is ironic cause the rest of my family are dog people) but in the last few months I’ve taken it upon myself that I want to learn as much as I can about them. Not yours and her videos and posts that I’ve started to follow and watch have been very helpful along with books and other internet resources. I’ve yet to be able to own a cat sadly, but the way I see it if I go ahead and start all of this research/journey, I’ll be able to make their lives that much better when I’m able to adopt!

Hey Jackson, i have 2 sibling cats. 2 yrs old yesterday. They were born in the rescue centre, neutered at 10 weeks old and spent the first 12 weeks of their lives in the rescue. They were petrified of people when we got them and 2 yrs on they still are. I dont have young kids and not many visitors but they run and hide at the door knocking and even sometimes the phone ringing. The loving room is solely theirs. Toys, beds, we have put in a real tree branch that is floor to ceiling and we are putting kitty highways around the walls like you have suggested. They go in the garden 2x a day for a couple of hours with supervision and 1x at night for half hour so they can experience night cat life. The girl is a sweetheart, likes to do her own thing and find her own fun and will play if she feels to. She has no aggression at all. The boy.....is a horror. He is mean to her, often chases her up the stairs if she goes down to investigate after the lights are out, he bites and intimidates her and generally dominates her every move. Weve done a soft reintroduction, we have diffusers. Eventually, for no apparant reason he will get bored or maybe frustrated and he will start on his sister. She generally rolls over belly up and hisses at him but he will go straight in nipping her belly neck hind legs. Its never become a full on cat fight because im home all day to intervene. My girl could do the boy serious damage if she wanted to but she rarely retaliates. It started when the girl grew out of charging round the house chasing each other and wouldnt take part anymore. The girl also allowed me into her mojo at this same point, up until that point the boy was my shadow. When i split the time and cuddles between the 2 he was less than impressef. Now, they do sometimes chase happily and playfully but most times it is the boy goading or beating on his sister. I dont understand his switch from gorgeous loving cuddly little brother into an aggresive little control freak. Im putting in the catwalks, bringing outside in, got the cat tv thing in every window etc and i take them in the back garden every day whatever the weather but my little boy cat is seriously not happy or liking his sister. They are indoor cats initially having only spent 2/3 months as outdoor cats when they were 8 months old but have been indoor cats for almost a year now. The boy was too scared to out the garden for long and would dash home after about 20 minutes maximum. Then he would happily stay in the garden chasing butterflies and bugs. Any advice on what might be troubling this little guy please?

My Basecamp seems to be the living room, especially the couch. Since quarentine, my Kenny comes out to me and will lay next to me and I will pet and cuddle with him. It took me awhile but I finally got it, what he really wanted was for me join him and his mom in the bedroom. I have had these beautiful beings for twelve years and this is definitely a quarentine newby. Just wanted to share this with you. You are definitely right about listening to your cats and joining in on what they need.

I'm foster home that help cats being adopted. Plz share some tips how to ease the tense of cats when they first relocate to new home. For instance if the cats meowing all night causes they're anxious to the new place, what can new guardian do so that both of them could get some rest. Thank you very much.
@nolongerhuman13
@nolongerhuman13 4 жыл бұрын
Original TW_YoungDesign HEY! :) I just went through this! So here’s what I did. First of all make sure to crate them if they are very small. You must have a crate large enough that you couldn’t carry it alone. It must be about the size the vet uses. I set it up with a “snugglesafe “ warming disc. Also putting a tic tock clock just outside of the crate mimics the heart beat. They sell things that do this also. Put all the things that you fostered the cat with. His basecamp stuff in the crate. His water bowl and feeding is done in the room where the crate is. Always leave the crate door open when the kitten is not in it. Keep the cat or kitten restricted to one room for a week or more. Opening up the house. One room at a time. For them to explore. Also moving the base camp items out and allowing new ones to be made by the cat. If it’s NOT a kitten. Skip the crate part. And just confine to a room that has good temperature and is near the proud new parents. The cat shouldn’t meow too much unless he is wanting. Cats do NOT enjoy playing alone. Nothing really does. So I recommend timing the meals and timing play time. Play with the cat the way jackson describes. Allowing them to climb. Hunt. Run. Get them tired. They will sleep well on the snuggle safe that’s nice and warm when they are tired. They are very regimented. So keep them on a regimen. I could type for hours what I have been through. From bottle feedings to the newborn whose mom left the hour she had him. To introducing them to older cats. Etc. It’s all thought and all mojo. Pay attention to your cats. They are paying attention to you. Put the phone DOWN when u play with them. Tv isn’t on bcuz YOU AND THE CAT will be distracted by the movements on the screen. But base camp is a must. And if they are kittens. I kept mine in the room for 2 months. He was 3.2 ounces when I found him. So almost only 3 ounces. It was very hard. And very rewarding. He is a little gift. And a maniac. I know I have had to put him in the bathroom somentimes with all of his things just to get some sleep. Bcuz I’m not a kitten and I get tired !! Lmao. Eventually. So will he. But if the two don’t match up then they have to go to sleep in another room. That’s why the crate is handy. It fits all their stuff and it’s the first place they have ever been.

We though she got stuck in the trash can outside because you could hear very faint mews when you'd say her name. Nope she was stuck under the sink. I have a cat who won’t play. I get her toys and if she likes them she plays with them until she tires of them. She isn’t very reactive to catnip. I’ve tried rotating toys every few months. She won’t even play with her fishing pole toys anymore and they were the last thing I could get her to engage with. She is even frightened of some toys. Springs terrify her and if she sees one she runs out of the room. Is my cat depressed? I briefly considered getting another cat but I can only have one cat due to many reasons I don’t care to go into here. I want her to be happy. She doesn’t seem happy anymore. She is not even 2 years old yet. I’m worried. There are circumstances in my life that I can’t change (I’m disabled) and I can’t pick her up. But she loves to cuddle in bed with me most nights. When I need to trim her nails I have to coax her with favorite treats into my lap. Sometimes I take her outside and do the same to put her harness on but she is beginning to catch onto my “trick”. I always try to use a calm voice and calm hands and body language to make it as positive an experience as possible. She is a very good girl and really smart. I’m working on teaching her some tricks too.

Could it be just her own personality/character? Or it could be genetic as well. Depressed cats usually show more telling signs (just like human), things like: suddenly doesn't want to eat or eat way too much, either going into hiding a lot or become clingy, being more agressive or a lot more reserved all of a sudden, being very lethargic, peeing pooping outside the litter box, and so on. I have a 4 year old rescue cat, she doesn't respond well to catnips as well (instead of making her calm and happy, it turns her to be very agressive and agitated, so i never use it). She usually just want to play with her bunch of toys on either early morning or night time, and only for a few minutes. Other than that, she's just either chilling, sleeping, sunbathing, or lying around the house all day. When she was a kitten just under 1yo, she was very incredibly active, but I notice the activity level definitely has been declining over the years. Her mom too was never an active cat. So I think that just might be a blend of her own character and genetic predisposition. Just a few suggestion tho, cats love to play with scrunched up papers, cardboards or plastic bags. I know mine does. She loves these a lot more than all the expensive toys I bought her. Just make sure to supervise them when they're playing with it. I know this is a veryyy long and late reply, but I hope this could help to ease your mind a bit. I wish you and your cat well. 😊😊😊

Holly Bercik there is a calming spray from Nature ..... at Petsmart, that you can spray onto the carpet (1-2. spritz) or around the places you want her to feel secure. It is with pheromones and helps a good deal to calm a cat. My friend showed me that there is a catnip spray that maybe entices the cat if you spray it onto a toy, maybe she will respond better to than to the raw herbal kind (leafy). Good luck. My cats responded to the calming spray very well, when I introduced them to each other.

I really liked learning about base camp and why it is so important. I have had my cat Marvin for a little over 10 years. We added an additional pet our dog Nyack 3 years ago. I started noticing Marvin behavior changing because he is so chill and the dog is hyper and extremely jealous, the cat was anxious, eating to fast and hiding when Nyack was coming around. I just started making a base camp for Marvin and I hope he will love the change and feel more secure and less stressed soon.

Some cats and dogs it can take up to a year or more for them to finally accept each other and they are not a threat to each other. Hope your introduction is going well.

QUESTION for JACKSON: how can I get my cats to use the bed they had as kittens again. I washed it and they sniff it and walk away. I've tried laying their blanket on it but they stay away from it.

Jackson, my wife and I have two cats and I stay home all day every day. I have medical issues where I end up in the hospital about once a month (sometimes less sometimes more). My cats start fighting cause I'm not there and their schedule for play and food changes cause my wife works and she comes and visits me. Then they continie fighting for a few days after I return. What can I do to ease the transotion for them?
