Hey Jackson, love watching cats from he'll over here in the UK lol. I'm getting a kitten tomorrow & yes, I have a power recliner sofa, which you have just said don't get if you have a cat lol. Can you suggest any ideas to stop him from going exploring inside it. I was thinking about spraying inside there with a lavender spray. Would that work? Also his current mommy said that he as just left his mum & brothers & sister 2-3 weeks ago & he likes to chew doors, walls, furniture, & cables. I was going to try & find a trainer for him but do you know what the best way to stop him from doing this as I have a very smart home with a hell of a lot of cables & some of the steps you've said are not going to be practical for my home, also she said he bites & scratches a bit. Any advice that you can give would be extremely appreciated. All the best & hope you enjoy the rest of your week. Brian from Birmingham UK.

@@crakedispelo6498 are you thinking about a kitten or an adult cat? Either way please go to your local animal shelter. 💙💙💙 Spend time with the cats that you think you are interested in. If you spend time with several of the cats believe me one of them will choose you and you will have a very happy fur baby! 😺😻😽 Also Jackson is 100% correct about adopting two. Talk to the shelter volunteers and if they have a bonded pair. A bonded pair are sometimes hard to adopt out because a lot of people already have pets. So there you go please adopt don't shop and spend time with a bonded pair. If you do this you will be my superhero! Please keep in touch and let us know.

@@smokieandenzo one thing that will really help with the issues he's having, adopt one of the brothers or sisters as well. They will play and wear each other out plus the benefit of having two is that as kittens they learn from each other that biting each other too hard hurts 😸💙💙

Just had to evacuate my cat two nights ago. The carbon monoxide alarms went off in the middle of the night, so I immediately got her carrier out and she loves playing in it so she goes right in. I also encouraged her with treats to go in it when she was a young kitten. I thanked myself for doing that, as she was zipped safely in her carrier in about 15 seconds and we got outside quickly. The fire dpt came and luckily did not detect any CO, said we have a faulty detector, but now I know that I’d be able to easily get her in her carrier in a real emergency.

Beware of fridges! When my cat was a kitten she snuck in there and was locked in for several minutes before we heard her screaming and opened it back up. It sounds silly but it happens.
@benw9949
@benw9949 3 жыл бұрын
When I had had my senior cat a few years past kitten hood, and thought we had all the major kinks worked out of exploring, boy, did I get a surprise one day. I had been cleaning out the fridge, then put in some food I'd cooked. So the fridge had been open a few times. I thought I was being careful. I had my back turned a time or two. I finished and went back to work in the rest of the house. A few minutes go by. "That's funny, where's my cat?" He would usually hang out with me when I went to my desk or bedroom. I checked the house, calling. No cat. What on earth? I had not been outside, so I knew he was in somewhere. Finally, I remembered the fridge and checked. By then, it had been several minutes. There he was, confused but not worried, and out he got, as if no problem. -- That truly worried me. I don't know how long he could've lasted in there. It would be dark and cold, above freezing. I would think the oxygen would run out. I did not hear him meow even once, with me calling and everything. Did he meow and I couldn't hear him from in there? Did he not meow while in danger, because he wasn't/t worried yet? Scary. He did not tear things up or have an accident. (Oh, I checked!) Thankfully, he/s never done it again. I just looked at him and cocked my head and told him don't do that, eh could've gotten hurt. It was too big a mistake and too worrisome to get too upset with him, but it shook me up. I spent extra time with him that afternoon. -- And I wonder if we'd hear it if a cat or a little kid or a dog got in a refrigerator. I would expect an older kid or adult could kick their way out unless the door was jammed. So very glad my cat was OK. I don't know how long he was in there, all told. But I could've had a seriously hurt or dead cat that way, if I hadn't/t checked as soon as I noticed he was missing. He is otherwise usually bright. Why, kitty cat? Why? Still love him dearly. That's been years ago now.

Yes, I'm very cautious when I open my fridge. My kitty is very curious and a lot of times when I have it opened, she's looking in there like she wants to jump in. I could actually see her doing that with her personality. So fridges is something that I'm very careful with. Especially since not only is it cold in there, but they could run out of air within a few minutes.

That is true. I never worry about my older cats, but my little kitty drives me up the wall. She gets into things I never thought a cat could get into. My other 2 older ones never really got into much even when they were kitties. But my little Missy, gets into everything. Everybody always wants kittens. Although nothing is cuter than a kitten, nothing is more frustrating than a kitten either. I love her to death, but I do worry on a daily basis about what she will get into next.

Tip: If you have pot plants, especially bigger ones, you can put big rocks over the soil in the pot. This makes it impossible for a cat to move them to get to the soil. The rocks also do look quite nice 👍
@wendy645
@wendy645 Жыл бұрын
I'd also recommend putting stones inside the bottom of the pot, then soil and your plant, then more stones. This way it doesn't exclusively move the center of gravity up to the top of the pot, which ironically enough ends up making it more likely that the whole thing will tip over. 😊

The problem is too many people don’t know how to anchor furniture properly. IKEA gives the kits to people because they were found guilty by the US government of having furniture that was killing small kids. They could solve the whole issue by creating furniture that meets the standards for not tipping, which are the simplest standards to meet (can it resist tipping if 50lbs is placed on any shelf or drawer). It would take the most minor modifications in design for the furniture to resist tipping.

If the top & bottom are the same width, towering 1800mm high of cf course its going to topple as soon as the cat or cats climb it especially if their in full play mental mode!! It dosnt need to be much of a add on, ive got prob about 130mm all round & to blend it with the tower itself i got some offcut carpet & put that between the tower base & the new base, it looks like it came like that, also didn't like the idea of a strap half way up the tower attaching to the wall, i can see it being a good way for them to neck themselves & surely it would restrict their full physco swinging acts goin up & down!!

I don’t know if it’s bc it crinkles or if it’s bc she actually wants to consume it bc I always take it from her before she gets a chance. But she doesn’t just bat them around. They’re always in her mouth if she can find them.

Awesome idea but vicks has the perfumes and chemicals that can poison that jackson says not to use -and vets. You CAN use an orange or orange peel, its natural, not poisonous to cats - they just dont like citrus fruits. At xmas put them around the bottom of the tree or as decoration on the bottom branches and your cats wont climb the tree :) 🐾

My cat hasnt been diagnosed with pica but this last year she keeps going for wires 👀 Going to use your tip and Jackson's cord hider tip, switch vicks for orange though. Has anyone found any flowers that aren't poison to cats. So many! I love Rose's and lilies but I love my cat more. Still would be nice to have some flowers occasionally.

I was going to soon make a deposit for 2 Birman kittens but after watching your video I got cold feet that I am now taking this adoption thing a lot more seriously. I have built in shelves everywhere and some of the shelves are made out of glass and most of the stuff that I put on those shelves are breakable. So after seeing your video I toured my house and a lot of the things that you stated I had in full view from lite candles, gaps at the bottom of my kitchen cupboards and lower dishwasher, curtain cords, exposed soaps and colognes, loose cupboard doors that a cat could open, hide a bed with a bed frame, the inside of my wood burning fireplace, 3 plants that I don't know if they are toxic yet and I to leave things on counters, floors and tabletops. All of these things I noticed within the first 5 to 10 minutes of my tour. Thank you so very much for this video for I don't know what I would do if my negligence would end up harming one of my kittens . What scares me now is what I did not notice but I cannot go around being paranoid either.

Little tip for the crafters and people who sew: get a tool box to store your threads, needles and even fabric. Yes the tool box thats usually for construction tools, but the small, hard plastic ones come often with multiple compartments, a nice handle and with strong clamps to keep the box closed well. These things can come cheaper than storage boxes designed for storing sewing supplies, especially in terms of size and durability. And theyre easy to stack as well!

I have a friend, that told me a horror story that happened to her cat. She was sewing and the needle dropped on her carpet. She looked for that needle everywhere. She couldn't find it; then a few days later, her cat starting hiding in her closet. She knew that was not normal behavior for her cat. She took her cat to her vet. and he performed an x-ray. He found the needle up her cat's nose! The vet thankfully removed it. No harm to her cat, thank God, she took her cat to her vet! Now that I have a cat( Henry, I'm only allowed to have one cat) I'm so very careful about every room in my house. My cat is an indoor cat( due to a busy st. right outside my front door) so I purchased a window perch; as it is too cold to leave the window open during cold weather. Henry Loves it!! He also has a climbing post with a small "condo", scratching posts, climbing areas, toys that dangling, that are safe for Henry( came with the " condo" ) and several levels of climbing areas, but not high enough that I can reach Henry, in case of an emergency. Henry is the love of my life. I actually named him Henry, as that was my late son's nickname that I had for him. Henry( my cat) is the reason I get up every morning, to face a new day with Henry. P.S. Where I live, no pets allowed, but I have special permission from my landlord to have Henry.I ♥♥♥♥🐱🐱🐱 I Lovey Henry!!!😊🤗😍😍😍😍😍😍😍

For my fellow kitten owners who have a low bed and you're waiting for your kitten to get big enough that they don't fit under the bed anymore, a very budget-friendly block for under your bed are pool noodles. My black baby girl Midnight would go under the bed with the clearance being maybe 1.75 inches tall. We knew that she would eventually get too big to go under, but we still wanted to block it out. We got a bunch of pool noodles (5-6 for a king size mattress) and they worked perfectly. They cut easily and you can squish them around the bed to block until your babies are too big to fit. Much more affordable than the super expensive bed blockers that I was looking at

Curtains...blinds...light cords, cables, anything stringy. I just learned to unplug anything I didn't want the kittens to chew up and get electrocuted. Yes it was a pain for a bit, but eventually they grew out of that phase and the house was fine. I let them just explore yet I always followed them to see what they was into. Anything like q-tips and little things must be picked up. My senior cat just watched them play and then I put the kittens in a cat room for an hour and gave that time to my senior. It all worked out fine. Being a catdaddy is a full time job but awfully rewarding but always remember...patience! If you don't want them to get into things when your gone, put it away or unplug it. I also suggest to shut your windows and doors when your away. When your home with them you can train them to not get on them.

Our latest edition has been one of our biggest challenges- our cat loves chewing wires. We discovered this when she first chewed a low level laptop plug and we had to rush her to emergency. Since then we have taken every live wire out of reach- and for two technophiles that is a lot of chords. We designated a room the office where she is never allowed, and shut the door at all times. It seems excessive I know to some, but when I find chewed up unplugged chords, it only reinforces that we are doing the right thing.

I still have some catproofing left to do in my livingroom, but one big thing I decided - both to help with my hubby’s allergies and because of all the cat dangers involved was this: The office/ Craft room is a cat-free zone. None of her scent markers are in there, and we keep that door closed when neither of us are in there. When he’s studying, sometimes she’ll wander in for a quick scritch, but we quickly turn her around so she doesn’t linger in there. Most everywhere else can be catproofed. That room, I just don’t trust myself not to miss something small with.

The vet costs were very expensive so yes these things do happen to real people. It will take up to 4 weeks to heal but the other challenging part to this is he needs to wear a protective cone so he doesn't lick the cast. He is so so sad this will seem like a lifetime for poor kitten. I'm so sad too.

When our adventurer first came home as a kitten, I spent two years teaching her the importance of "no" and that I am the most dangerous person in the house. That is why when I "click" it means no. And she knows she doesn't want to make me get up to stop her. There are many times she will argue with me verbally. But she obeys. Except when she manages to get outside without her harness and leash. That's the really big no no in our house. Never let the cat out without her harness. The only thing she still tries to sneak is chewing plastic bags. But I am almost always round to hear her and stop her. We try to keep all of the plastic bags away from her.

Thank you for making this extensive list. People don't think about these things. When I was a vet tech, a client called in hysterical because her cat was killed in the dryer. Another cat ate a sewing needle with the thread still attached. We only found it because he became so ill and we were about to anesthetize him for exploratory surgery. Opened his mouth to intubate and there it was, piercing his soft palate 😨

I rub Dawn dish soap on wires it taste very bitter. I put black pepper on my certain objects, spritz Misty water on the side of the furniture to keep them from scratching and sprinkle black pepper on it after that. Worked for me for over 50 years and I rescued many many many animals.

I’d love to see a video and your take on managing cat life with multiple cats. I have 5 furry babies and that comes with a whole new set of challenges. For example, training is difficult as all 5 crowd me at the same time if treats are about. Going to a different room doesn’t work as they’ll scratch at the door to be allowed in - which is super distracting for the kitty I’m trying to work with. Food can be difficult to track, it can be difficult to monitor bathroom waste, etc. I’d just love to hear your take on it 😁

Jackson, this video could not have come up at a better time! I just adopted a 6 week old kitten to be a companion to my 6 year old cat,, and I am already seeing MANY things I am in the process of kitten-proofing. I like that you mentioned the runners to cover electric cables. I honestly hadn't really thought much about that because my older cat is not destructive at all. He has his toys and cat tree and window perch he hangs out on, but OH BOY is this little kitten a pistol! I would also like to add in addition to covering your cables, there are these things called "cable management boxes" . they are small to medium sized boxes that cover up your power strips. These have been the BEST things we have found to keep our new kitten from stepping on power strips and turning them off, or prevent her from putting her claws in them. Velcro also works well to attach said cable management boxes to walls or under your desk. As far as my kitchen goes. I do not have handles on my cabinets, but have found that velcro on the cabinets also works to keep both cat and kitten out of them.

One of my cats was obsessed with dental floss. Be careful of that! I cut it up tiny and flush it down the toilet. I also had a cat that snuck into the refrigerator once. I had forgotten something so went back in under a minute but had I not done that I probably would never have heard him cry in there. I'm glad you pointed that out. 👍

Hey my moms always been afraid of cats so I was never allowed to have one growing up. But I’m 19 and a sophomore in college now and I got a grey/black/brown/orange tabbi cat and I love him. I really like watching these videos and other videos to educate myself on being a good owner for the little dude. And tbh it’s honestly working. When I first got him he would chew my chargers, hide from, meow constantly at night but I’ve slow ley been implementing the advice from these videos and over time his meowing has stopped and he seems to imprinted on me. Overall he’s been a good boy lol. (Btw he’s 5-6 months old

I got 2 bc several professional animal experts including jackson said it was easier bc they teach each other. But OMG it has been hard. They are into everything! They are female siblings and got them at 3 months old. Before they got here my husband and I packed up everything on tables and shelves in living room bought a giant cat tree. Same with bedroom. But they want behind the mirror above my dresser. They can jump from one dresser to the other and over the washer and dryer to get behind them. We keep the bathroom doors shut bc they slice the shower curtains. They have their own bedroom and that's where they stay while we sneak in a meal for ourselves. They are either 5 month old wildcats or sleeping sweet we love them cats. I've had cats b4 but never 2 at a time!

I work at a vets office. We had a cat come in with a wound/lump on its face. When we took an xray, the cat had a sewing needle stuck in the side of the face. We were able to surgically remove it, but if we didnt take xrays, we never would have known. The strings attached to the needles make them especially appealing.

Ive got 8 cats so best thing is to just keep all the doors closed (apart from the lounge) so they cant enter bedrooms, bathrooms or the kitchen. I also have to keep a lock on the main living room since they know how to open the door!

Many of these examples I've had close calls with from my childhood with cats. The oven, recliners, and cords especially. I always account for the cat when using a machine or lifting up my bed. We bought storage boxes that take up all the space under the bed so the only parts our 18yr old cat can get to is the border well within arm reach. Another measure is we have a crate just for her that isn't very heavy. Treats and blankets and a hot pad is in there, but it's one we can close up completely and also lift up so that's exactly where she goes to feel safe, we can football her into it, and all get out should something happen like a fire or other disaster.

Man, my ragdoll is such a good girl. She knocks things over occasionally but otherwise she leaves the cords, recliners, oven, balloons, dryer, cupboards, flowers, Christmas tree, etc. alone. She’s a lazy, lazy loaf of a kitty until the da bird toy comes out. :)

As always Jackson Galaxy the cat Daddy! You're a very good parent, you mentioned things I had not thought of, so I thank you very much. I have pretty much a chemical-free home so that's not a big problem but it was something definitely worth mentioning. I just want to thank you for all the information you always give us and hopefully I can get one of those sweatshirts still because it's really cool. And by the way your beard looks really nice the way it is. Please give your beautiful wife my best Be safe Be happy Have light love and mojo Back at you.
