This is the start to finish video of my basement dig-out. I started this project in 2012, and finished in late 2017. I dug out the dirt with a pick, shovel, and conveyor belt. I poured new foundations and 8 inch thick walls . I went 4 inches under my existing foundation and 4 out. I did small sections at a time and had no problems. Now my basement is updated, and awesome!

Young man I had your energy and ambition years ago. I wanted to be self employed and I lacked experience, I did what you did here. all my life, I tackled big difficult jobs, I finished and I gained knowledge. I was in my glory building, humble always, I crippled my self working for some one else. It slowed me down tremendously, but, I continued on.I found my niche market in oil burners, I could sit on my tool bucket, keep my mind occupied and my body busy. You have my utmost admiration and respect. I have developed a few gadgets, tools, devices, inventions along the way, you might be doing the same, write them down, date and time stamp them, put them away for a time when things are a bit slower and capitalize on them.Nice job young man, nice job.

This doesn't always end well. I knew someone who did this and we had an epic 3 day rain that caved in the old foundation. The whole house ended up in the basement. You need more than determination to pull this off.

I don't think this is a mind over matter stuff. I think it's more of a budget and how much time can you waste on your weekend and off time. If he had $60k, I'm pretty sure he can get it done with-in 6month. From what it looks, he'd rather do it himself with family and a span of 5 years. This might have cost him around $25k-$30k only. Hehe, there was a picture of his wife pretty exhausted and unhappy about digging.

I did something similar between 2011 and 2014. Three-foot crawl space is now an 11' deep basement. I built 26 high-strength steel columns to go under the existing foundation, poured a 12" thick floor - was supposed to be 6, but ready-mix company screwed up the pour and poured six more inches atop the first - laid block under the existing footings, grouted the gap between old and new foundation, built an armored door to the outside, and put in a staircase from the first floor. The only tools I had were a shovel, wheel barrow, a strong back, and the will to get it done. There were times I could not help but wonder whether I'd lost my mind. In fact I am there now as I am in the middle of building a new kitchen off the old, about 22x30'. I'm not getting any younger, and yet this is like a disease.... digging, grading, laying block, and out of seemingly nothing... something arises.

massive job.. i live in canada and a 40 x 50 rectangle bungalow cottage in Quebec was sitting on post n pier 40 yrs old. .. it took 4 summers but we dug it out.. and cast a form and built a full height basement but kept it unfinished for a huge storage place .. gravel sand n boulders and put the sand gravel mix into the driveway and made the glass windows from used glass n wood and hand made wood doors because its just a cottage.. .. concrete floor and gravel base we used the little rocks for drainage and installed weeping tile but its bone dry. .. good job..

Holy cow! Very nice. We just bought a 100 year old farmhouse. It has a stone foundation and a crawlspace. I would love to do something like this so my husband can have his "man cave". Not that he's messing but I miss not having to see his "things" all over. Now it's all I see when I walk into our house. I think he would be more comfortable in his own space as well. But 5 years? Awesome final result, you truly have a basement you can be proud of. The only that that concerned me was the fact that you have all of your networking gear in the same place as you have water. If you have a water leak, that could be an expensive repair/replacement of your network hardware.
