Check out my "How to Finish a Basement from Start to Finish Video" (Full Basement Remodel Video that includes every project): • How to Finish a Baseme...
This DIY Basement Renovation Time Lapse shows the entire process of renovating a basement from start to finish. This basement remodel took me nearly two months to complete since I was doing all of the work myself on nights and weekends. Although renovating the basement was a lot of work, I learned a lot of DIY and home renovation skills process of finishing my basement.
This basement renovation started with demolishing the existing walls, drywall, etc. Next, I installed rigid foam insulation on the exterior walls of the basement. Rigid foam insulation is waterproof and a great option for basement exterior wall insulation. To install the basement walls, I framed them using 2"x4" lumber. I used pressure treated lumber for the bottom plate for the basement walls. Basement insulation consisted of batt insulation in the walls and sound proofing insulation in ceiling to reduce the sounds of footsteps above. I installed drywall in the basement and then finished it using joint compound and drywall tape. Finishing the drywall was my least favorite part of the entire basement remodel. Next, I installed Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) flooring on the basement floor. LVP is a great flooding option for basements since it is waterproof, durable, and easy to install. Instead of installing drywall on my basement ceiling, I decided to install a drop ceiling. The basement drop ceiling installation was a bit involved, but I wanted to allow for access to the plumbing and electrical cable in the ceiling. To complete the basement remodel, I painted the basement walls and installed trim around each basement room. Let me know what you think of the final result!
To complete a DIY Basement Renovation, you are going to need quite a few tools. Here are some of the most important tools to have when remodeling a basement:
- Reciprocating Saw (for demolition): amzn.to/3YzFRnh
- Drill: amzn.to/47pEw6H
- Framing Nailer (for basement walls): amzn.to/3s8t8vO
- 6' level: amzn.to/4467MfT

- Carpenter's Square: amzn.to/3GQ8YdN
- Circular Saw: amzn.to/3w9ZMvR
- Jig Saw: amzn.to/3ZJoxMU
Below are some of the Products that I installed in my basement (electric fireplace, coffee table legs, etc.)
- Electric Fireplace: amzn.to/3OR3g0a

Dropped ceiling panels can be really nice now, they have some very decorative panels. It also gives you the benefit of having access to your joist cavities and all the plumbing and wires for the main floor anytime there might be a problem. Good job!

Not a fan of basement renovation unless I know water isn't coming in in the future. I used to install basement systems for water remediation. And have torn alot of these wonderfully built sculpted basements apart just to solve water issues. So a tip is to make sure exterior grading is perfect for water remediation and even having one inside before making these wonderful upgrades. You did such a wonderful project thumbs up to to the result.

Great advice. We have a big basement we thought of finishing. The previous owner said it was a "dry basement" but has no sump hole. Well after about a year we started getting water in the basement. So first thing is to get that taken care of. French drain possibly.

Well done, I did the same thing in my basement. Some of the things that I noticed when I did mine is the tuck tape eventually loses its stickiness and comes off in places, so I ended up putting three layers of tape just for the extra protection. I also used foam gasket under the pressure treated to keep it away from the concrete.

Great work, man. Looks terrific. For anyone else doing this work, I would personally put down roofing felt on the concrete before the LVP. I know most of your LVP claims to have a built in moisture barrier, but I still think another one isn’t a bad idea. Sooooo much moisture will be coming out of that slab on grade that a dedicated barrier will help in my humble opinion.

A possible suggestion for future time lapse videos would be to voiceover your commentary instead of typing it, and maybe slow down the speed of the clips. Maybe I'm just a slow reader, but I kept having to pause the video to read the caption before it jumped to a different clip, and I didn't want to miss anything. The basement looked phenomenal when finished, Overall 10/10 great work and video!

Awesome job, night and day. I did this a few years ago to my basement with zero carpentry experience. Spray painted my ceiling black, used paneling on the walls, and hired out carpet installation to keep things simple. I probably spent as much time figuring out my next move as I did executing that move. Learned a ton though. You don't know what your capable of until you try.

My husband and I have a basement just like your “before” basement. Concrete block walls, concrete floors, etc. We purchased our house with the intention/hope of being able to finish our basement into a gaming area and add more living space-and resale value-to our home. Honestly, the idea of trying to do it all ourselves terrifies us, but we’re either too brave or too dumb to listen to the fear so we decided that we’re going for it either way. Your video has provided not only a good example and inspiration, but also the reassurance that all of our ideas that we have in mind are actually possible. Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us. ❤

Looks awesome. Only thing I would have done first instead having experienced this is making absolutely sure the basement was water proofed. Our last house had a finished basement but with heavy rain we had water issues and had to rip a lot out and have drain tile installed and subtle foundation cracks repaired. We were able to get it put back together and have had zero issues since, but when we finish the basement in the new house I’m definitely doing the waterproofing part first

I definitely had some water issues previously. I had interior drain tiles and a sump pump installed before finishing the basement!

Just a tip as a mason. It's not a good idea to put foam on the inside of your block walls. This stops the heat from escaping through the block if you live in a cold climate and will cause your walls to be pushed in from frost. I would recommend doing it on the outside or not doing it at all.

For those remodeling a basement in humid areas, you will need more insulation on the walls to avoid condensation.

If I’m not mistaken you’d also want a barrier between the concrete and LVT flooring.

I love this video. The only thing I would have done different was to paint the basement walls with Drylock before framing as an extra layer of water protection. Otherwise this is great.

You want to solve the water problems from the outside. Also get a sump pump if making this big of an improvement

@@nofurtherwest3474 You are so correct. I have a friend who is a commercial Caulker and he said something to me that really makes sense. He said you can't keep water out but you can keep it from coming in and that all stems from water pressure.

Okay absolutely love the carpet , fire place and sofa! As a girl I generally hate basements but this one changes my mind cuz it looks like a room that could easily be located on a first floor! There’s no basement vibes well done and Bravo 💪👏

When installing foam panels, you must install Fire Stops, a minimum of every 10 feet. Usually they get installed every Eight Feet, or every other vertical seam. Also Fire Stops must be installed Horizontally.

Wicked video. Im hesitant to do drop down ceiling as my basement is only 7 feet tall. At 6’5 I wanted to leave as much space as possible, however the trade off with the simplicity of the lighting, and design seems to be a better trade off. Will definitely use this video during my development! Thanks!
