Concise video on the fundamentals of baseplate compass use. We discuss the features and use of a baseplate compass . We discuss quadrant bearing and whole circle bearing and how to convert the two formats easily. We discuss map basics specifically USNG gridded maps and how to interoperate with MGRS and UTM grid and how to use tools on the baseplate compass to plot and read points on a topo map. We discuss how to plot bearings on the map with a baseplate compass. In the capstone exercise we bring it all together and then review our work.

Great video, Bret. Comment: When the little Garmin GPS handhelds came out we quickly forgot about printed maps. Now in love with the little AA battery-powered critters; sales of the USGS paper quadrangles dropped. Our mapping skills soon dropped to zero. Big mistake. In the event of a national emergency the flip of a switch could encrypt the GPS transmissions and we'd all be out of luck.Thanks for keeping this important - and fun - skill alive!

Thank you John ! GPS is there until it isn't . There are many today who have never even handled a paper map besides one for a theme park perhaps. Thanks for watching !

Very much so. Route planning on a road trip is another. I am a big proponent of using the Delorme Atlas Gazetteer and back roads on road trips unfortunately I have become spoiled using GPS and need to get back to using the map book myself. We have to be smarter than a smartphone IMHO. Thanks for watching !

You have a number of good tips in your video. I have never had someone give a quadrant bearing. I guess the weather station is the only example of common usage.
