A simple guide for beginners to configure a Cisco Catalyst Gigabit managed switch for home or office. You only need a laptop or PC, no extra software needed. Im using a 2960S.

Hi Photon, thanks for sharing. This is my project I'm working on today, and am curious if you think mounting on its side would cause any issues. I'm mounting it vertically on a wall with the ports facing off to the right.

That sounds fine. You just don’t want to block the rear (outlet) and side (inlet) vents. Enjoy your project!

just remove it! As long as you are using it withing the room temp, it works fine without I have been using it over 2 years already and no issues so far...

Can you have the 2960-s manage DHCP or is it best to leave that to the ISP router?

You can, but I always use a separate router. Ideally you want a separate modem, router and switch as the all in one devices are rubbish.

Thanks for this! i have the exact model - sorry i'm a complete newbie to networking - just need it to work!. i followed your exact instructions including IP addresses on the quick set up - after doing that - the switch works fine, but i can't access the quick set up url again which is default 10.0.0.1 ... any idea how to access that again? Thanks.

I changed the IP during setup from 10.0.0.1 to 192.168.1.11 Type in 192.168.1.11 and the Express Setup is available in the Contents menu under Configure.
