How we select the size of column based on grid dimension and no. of storeys Is there any short cut in selecting preliminary size of column in a building.

Based on load calculations, type of soil, type of materials using etc. the size of column is selected in almost all cases and In some conditions the size of column is selected based on thumb rule, but it is not said to be a short cut method.

Whatever the dimensions of house plan, the size of column various based on load coming on it but column orientation is based on the principal explained.
