A few basic exercises to help develop your hand independence on the piano.

Developing hand independence is something that pretty much all beginners struggle with at some point on their piano journey, it can also be the most frustrating thing to practice as well.
In this video, I give you a few very basic exercises to get you started with developing that freedom in each hand.
Take it as slowly as you need, you can't learn hand independence by rushing through exercises! You need to master each one and practice them over and over until you truly feel the independence within each hand.
There are endless exercises and drills out there for improving hand independence on the piano so if you'd like to see some more, let me know in the comments and I'll make a part two!

It's so astonishing that something that feels impossible to do at first becomes a piece of cake later. Our brain sure takes us places.

We absolutely need part 2! You were right that this is one of the things that bugs people that learn piano the most. I can humbly say I have developed a very good technique in each hand, but still very bad with both together! Please 2nd part too!

when I started playing Bass guitar I needed some serious independence training. So I found some great piano hand exercises, and it sure helped. Now that i am playing a little piano for songwriting I can suddenly play a lot better than when I was young. I'm going to keep it up too!

Thank you so much for these. Only started playing a few weeks ago, was trying to learn a basic boogie woogie piece & really struggling to get my hands to do different things. I’m still struggling but can see these really helping. I find I can just about do the second one if I close my left eye 😂

Your lessons are genuinely informative, and your personality is always relaxing and motivating. This is another gem, with payouts that improve everything I do on the piano (and guitar). Thanks! I would like to join the request for a part 2 at some point. One thing that I've been doing is trying to switch between legato left hand and staccato right (and vice versa) within these exercises. I am hoping that drilling with these added dynamic elements will help with richer musicality in my improvisations, but I imagine that there are other inventive variations with benefits that I am unlikely to predict, whereas you likely will. I'd love a level 4 and 5 vid. Perhaps also one that connects this sort of exercise to a jazz or blues vamp as well?

This exercise made me discover im actually not hopeless in learning the piano. What I mean is that theres this one exercise similar to this but we have both hands on C through G notes and practice different tempos on both hands. That is good practice but for your right hand cause when doing it with right side faster it sounds good but on the left hand it doesnt and it makes me think im doing it wrong. Finding this helped me see it wasnt me basically and im so happy.
