My dad was a heating system tech for 0ver 50 years and I learned a lot from him. This is great info for people to know for sure. When I have a heating issue I wish he was still standing over my shoulder guiding me through the repair.

You saved yourself a ton of money there! Good info. I was about to try and replace a furnace myself but fortunately for me, the house sold before I had to!

Never done much with gas furnaces(especially nice newer models like yours) but had to rig up a heat exchanger for a wood boiler in a 30+ year old HVAC unit in a modular home... OMG, I almost lost my mind!... anyway after gobs of research and a visit to a nearby shadetree HVAC guy I got it accomplished. I have mad respect of anyone willing to take on the HVAC world!

I've had a similar issue with our stove, needed a new ignition coil. $10 and it works great again. Thanks for the basic furnace walkthrough!

Had the blower motor stop working on my furnace, I uninstalled it myself and took the motor to a company that I knew carried electrical 110 volt motors. They didn’t have the exact same motor, but had one with all the right amps, watts, etc. only it wasn’t wired the same as my original furnace motor. So the company reworked their new motor so it could be plugged into my furnace. Cost me a little over $100.00 for the new motor and a few hours of my labor to get my furnace up and running properly again. I’m not a furnace guy or electrician by any means, but I’ve done a lot of handyman work over the years on the top of running my own cabinet shop business. There’s not many trades or skills I haven’t done in a home and not too much I’m not able to fix/repair myself! Needless to say when my friends have problems with their homes they call me! LOL

This reminds me of an old joke....A man is falling from the sky definitely going to die. He sees a man flying up towards him, he yells out to him DO YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT PARACHUTES. The other man yells back.. NO DO YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT GAS FURNACES.

Great tips and thanks for telling all the folks how easy it is. I happen to be a retired HVAC tech but it is enjoyable to watch anyways. I just recently redid all of my duct work in my 88 year old 5 bedroom home. It was not air balanced at all and I got tired of going down in the basement to change out furnace filters so I moved the filter to a central location on my first floor and added a second return trunk & filter. Then I added a CleanAlert FilterScan Filter Monitor. It is WiFi and lets me know on an app the state of my filters in real time. They have both battery & 24v powered units and sell a separate kit to use either upstream, downstream, or both at the same time. It tells you the return air temp as well as days since last filter change and % of clogged filter. I also use Eco Plus Washable FPR 9 Air Filters that last up to 10 years. I added a separate 24v transformer so as not to overburden the transformer onboard the furnace. Note: you need to have a WPS button on your WiFi router to activate this filter monitor. Tip: because these two most common parts you replaced are so cheap, I keep one of each on hand so I don't have to wait for the new one to ship. Tip for your furthest rooms from your fireplaces is to add inline six inch duct fans that are temperature controlled per room. I use Sonoff TH16 Temp & Humidity monitoring WiFi switches for these fans. I set the fans for on/off withing one degree. If you are just going to run your furnace fan to do this, they also make temp sensing registers that will open and close as per each room temp. I get free heat from my south facing windows by hanging an .032" aluminum sheet painted with high temp flat black. I measured the temp of one in the middle of winter at -10 degrees outside and the black side of the panel temp was 130 degrees in noon sunlight. This mixes with my return air passing by and it saves me approx 25% in energy by having 4 - 3 x 5 foot windows with panels on them. On a budget you can also use aspenite or underlay flooring as your panel, then aluminum foil taped on with aluminum metal duct tape. Then just paint the aluminum foil. The panel hangs 3" off the inside of the window to allow air movement behind it. You can also add a solar fan behind it if you so wish. If you have kids, it is best to NOT use something where the back will get that hot and burn little fingers. I did use aluminum foil first but found it dissipated the heat and when the sun was not so present, the panel cooled down fast. The .032" sheet held the temp longer like a solar bank.

Great info! It's also helpful to know sequence of operations to understand what's wrong, especially if there isn't a code. An easy way to remember is "Take It Slow, It Will Blow". Thermostat, Inducer, Safeties, Igniter, Warm-up, Blower.

Every time I go to a customers house who tried fixing their furnace 2 things happen. 1: they don’t admit they tried(even though it’s obvious to me) 2: it takes me longer to diagnose. I’d put a disclaimer on this, you did a good job... others may not and could hurt themselves. You have a decent understanding of the sequence of operations.. a multi meter would help in case it was the board causing the igniter to not be getting power. Next time you open the burner compartment, vacuum the rust out. Also carefully vacuum the condensation collector then prime with fresh water, those American standards tend to backup in heat and cause pressure switch faults... you’ll hear the inducer motor full of water when that happens. Good job

A similar super easy fix if you have an older gas clothes dryer is the "thermal fuse." If your dryer spins, but you never hear the gas click on, pull the back panel off your dryer and you will see a thermal fuse that is designed to blow if it gets too hot. Take it off and put a multi-meter on it, and if you have no connectivity through it, it is blown. I had one die on a 10+ year old dryer. The replacement was $6, and was incredibly easy to replace. I bought two since shipping was the same for one or two and left it when we sold the house so the next people would have one too! (disclaimer - if it blows again, you probably have a legit problem - figure out why it's too hot, don't burn your house down). I think the average person would have thrown out the dryer and bought a new one. This $6 fix probably got another 10 years out of that dryer.

Actually on them Trane TUH furnaces it uses the control board as a time delay to turn the furnace blower on. There is no “low limit”, the limit switch you were pointing at is a high limit switch that opens the circuit when the furnace gets to hot. It reminds the homeowner they should have changed the air filter about 6 months ago. LOL.

So just because the ignitor does come on doesn't mean the ignitor is bad. You must check for voltage first. It could be a bad board. Of course do a visual check if the ignitor is Cracked it's most likely bad. Flame sensor rarely go bad. They must be cleaned annually. I would not replaced a flame sensor just cause. I would recommend having a professional service and repair your furnace if your not experienced or not comfortable. I have seen many people get shocked or cause an issue within the furnace. That limit switch you pointed to is a high limit. It does not sense heat to turn on the blower. That limit only detects if furnace is over heating. There is no low limit sensing on furnaces. The low limit setting on the limit is the Reset for the limit. So when the high limit trips ( opens) and must cool down to the low limit to Reset (close) . This process is called short cycling cause of over heating. Limits trips (over heated ) resets (cools down) and heats again for a short period. How the blower kicks on is it senses the flame through the flame sensor and the board has a timer . Once that timer runs out if it's 10 secs or 20 secs then blower kicks on. Some of the newer furnaces this setting is adjustable. How you explained the limit is totally wrong.

Good video. I have a question. Do you prefer the heating system in the old house or the new house? I’m installing a wood burning this year because of issues like this.

I find it quit interesting that I can’t use the name of our Heavenly Father. I was blocked so I had to edit out the use of His name in order for my comment to go through. He has certainly blessed us though. So if my comment sounds strange it’s because I had to do some editing.💚🙃

My last propane fill I was told my heat exchange was cracked. I have been using an oil space heater until I can afford to replace the furnace. I seen this and hoped there was an easier fix. If you have time, Please let me know if there is.

Yes, they can be replaced. Best to be done by a professional, unless you're really handy. Edit: It's also MUCH cheaper than a whole furnace.

In most cases it is pretty expensive to just buy the heat exchanger. At that point you need to almost disassembly the entire furnace. I would recommend replacement if the heat exchanger needs to be replaced.

@@SSLFamilyDad, I had one replaced on an oil burning furnace and it was 20% of what a complete furnace would be. I'm sticking with replacing, as long as the rest of the furnace is good.

Depending how old the other parts are....its generally better to replace the furnace. Next week it could be the blower and then the week after the control board fries and also the induced fan too

Just for a check-up it cost $180 + and filters are $500 but is suppose to last for 2 years. If the electricity is out due to storms, is there a way to bypass the electric starter so you don’t freeze? I live in Alaska.

Other than Alaska markup....you can get pretty good filters for 15-20 bucks that last several months.

Great a home owner telling you how to repair your furnace. Can you say dangerous. Next he will be tell you how to work on your air plane if you have one. Also when you buy parts off the internet the manufacturer will not warranty the parts.

Amazon buys....got to keep the richest man in the world richer. There are other websites just as cheap. likely better quality too. Good video otherwise. You can light that burner manually with a long stem grill lighter too in a pinch with that scenario. Also check your pvc inlet (inside in your case but most go outside) for ice buildup. They can plug right up!
