I’ve recently rescued a 19 year old Blue Throated Macaw who has been improperly handled for the last 16 years. This is exactly what we’re working on right now as she has been handled only on shoulders and arms. I needed this! Thank you

Gosh, I get so jealous. I adopted a 25+ y/o Blue & Gold named Louie. He wasn't given a good upbringing and is now "aggressive" which I hate using that word, cause he has so much potential. He's quite spunky, lol. Time and patience. Your videos are massive helps. If I had the money I'd definitely look into getting him the help he needs to be the bird he can be.

Stepping down would also raise the issue of the bird's tail coming into contact with the perch/hand/etc. They're probably conscious of contact with the underside of their body or tail feathers.

Great video Jamie and Comet! I have a question. I recently started training my old untamed budgies and made the classic mistake of teaching them recall before step up. My budgies both fly to me quite comfortably now but stepping up is out of the question. How do I go about this? Luring doesn't seem to work as of yet. Any advice is much appreciated!
@BirdTricks
@BirdTricks 2 жыл бұрын
Keep shortening up your recall little by little. You will eventually go from flight to hop and then while you have momentum going try to get close enough for the step up. It may take many short sessions. Good luck!

I have a female budgie she came to our house when she was well over 7 months. Shes been with us for 3 years now and she comes on our fingers only by hopping and not taking 2 steps even when the finger is not low is there a way i could make her step up properly and go back without so much anxiety? (She wasnt neglected but there was no human interaction where she came from)

Love seeing Comet! Weird question, as you explain techniques Comet often does spins and other behaviors to try and get rewards. I've seen you guys call this "begging" in the past. Do you typically just ignore your birds when they "beg", since they're not doing anything on cue? Or do you reward because they did a trick? Are they begging just to get your attention?
@Nik-ei9st
@Nik-ei9st 2 жыл бұрын
Just from watching her videos, it seems like she mostly ignores the behavior, and tries to reset them when trying to get them to do something specific. The exception would be if they did something she’s in the process of teaching them. My example is with her cockatoo, it kept saying “hey cutie” which she didn’t treat for… but when the cockatoo started saying “thank you” she did reward the bird because she wanted to encourage the behavior. I hope that helps!

My yellow headed Amazon, always gets upset and trows away a treat if i try to give it to him by hand. Even food he really likes. He just takes the treat and throws it away. But if i put the treat in his feeding bowl, he can’t get there quick enough! Any ideas? Thanks in advance. Keith.
@jamssnana4084
@jamssnana4084 2 жыл бұрын
Hold the bowl in your hand when you reward him. Keep your fingers out of sight at first, then show them gradually until he sees both the bowl and your fingers. Bring your fingers/hand mire into view until he's very comfortable with it, then phase the bowl out. Hope that helps!

I have one parrot that will NOT step up. I’ve had him since Dec 31 2017. He’s a 17 yr old Quaker. He loves me but will not step up. He will warn me and if I push it, will bite and Quaker bites really hurt and draw blood. He has bitten me to the bone. If he gets spooked, and lands on the floor, he will step up but only then. I know Quakers are stubborn, but I wish he would step up. It’s just this year that he lets me scratch his head.

Ok, I don't get this. I don't understand the difference from "step up" vs "step down". As you were showing, they are both really a step "up" except when going "down" to the flat surface. So, in the end, does that mean there really is not a step down but they are all step ups? Would it be more confusing to the bird to try to differentiate the two? Can I treat it all as step up?
@Nik-ei9st
@Nik-ei9st 2 жыл бұрын
To me, from watching this video: “Step up”: the bird will *step onto his trainers hand* from a surface. “Step down”: the bird will *step off the trainers hand* onto a surface. These are two different actions the bird has to do, so they probably need two different commands/cues. To make it clear to the bird what exactly you want. For example I taught my dog “wait” and “stay”. Physically for the dog they mean the same thing: don’t move. But she knows that “wait” is a temporary hold that needs to happen now, and she always freezes and looks at me. It’s a safety command. And it’s typically used when I’m free walking her. “Stay” is a more relaxed command that she might have to hold for longer but is a less serious command. Normally for tricks or a “I have to do something stay here I’ll be right back”. Although both commands tell my dog to do the same thing, don’t move, our communication is clearer when we use two different commands. So although your bird is mostly doing the same action in both commands, lifting their feet off one surface and onto another, they tell the bird two different things: “come closer to me” and “go farther from me”. I hope that helps!
