In the construction industry, erecting structural steel is a common task performed by riggers. In this video we talk about some common components used and how to identify structural nuts. bolts and washers. This information will also be covered in your basic rigging course. Fun facts for all, AS1252 is the standard for these Structural bolts. The 8.8 is the class. This is in reference to how it’s rated. Steel is always rated by tensile strength (unlike concrete which is rated by compressive strength). You seperate 8.8 into two: 8 and .8 you times the 8 by 100 to get the Ultimate tensile strength which is 800MPa and then you times this 800 by .8 to get the yield point, 640MPa. So what does this mean? When you tension (tighten up the nut) to 639MPa the shaft (shank) of the bolt will stretch like a rubber band, but if you stop at this 639MPa and then loosen the nut, the bolt will return to its original shape. However, let’s say this time you tension the bolt a little bit further to the 640MPa yield point and then loosen the nut after, it will not return to its original shape now. It is now permanently deformed, if you keep going further to the Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS) of 800MPa, it will snap. Cameron

Don't stress to much about basic rigging math. All it is is formulas. Once you memorise them you jist put the numbers underneath and jump on a calculator. My basic rigging calcs video will go through it all, just watch it and write down the formulas. Write them down in order 100 times in a row if you need to but once they're memorised the rest is easy. By the way the third formula on working out the diameter of the rope is no longer required, so it is just the 4 formulas

Hi Kieran , love your vids. Please can you kindly do a video on line pull, as a new operator Ive never been able to manage to work out what it is and how to calculate it when operating a crane, I can't ask anyone , please help me with a video explaining it I'm sure it's be helpful to other new operators ..
